Chapter 21: Live in the moment

Bzzzz. Bzzz. Bzzzzzzzzzz.

I peek an eye open at the vibrating noise. The fire is now out, leaving the room in a low dim. There's barely any light peeking out from the cabin windows. I deduce it's probably around 4 AM since Mason and I knocked out around 2:30 AM. We started to have a Marvel movie marathon. I think we got through both Avengers movies before we began to feel sleepy.

Of course, there was a shit ton of cuddling and junk food.

Bzzz. Bzzz. Bzzzzz.

The vibrations seem to coming from the tabletop near the couch. I try to shake off the remnants of sleep no matter how comfortable and tired I feel. I frown at the position I am in. Mason has his arms wrapped around my waist tightly as he lays on his back in the couch. I lift my head off of his chest, no matter how much my body protests. It also doesn't help he's half naked. His chest is chiseled nicely. Then, I slowly unwrap his arms as I try not to wake him up.

It's to no avail. His arms are not freaking budging. I frown and give up after a few more attempts. Whatever.

Reaching an arm at the table close by, I barely manage to grab the phone that has been vibrating nonstop. Flipping the screen towards my face, I am blinded by the sudden brightness.

I glance at the screen and look at all the text messages. I scroll down all the way to the bottom.

"Is the bet still on?"

"C'mon, it's easy money!"

"it's just another notch"

"text me bruh, asap. k?"

"i'll throw in some mo $$"

"Where are you man?"

By this time, I realize this isn't my phone but Mason's. We both have the same phones and similar covers, though mine is midnight blue with stars and his is plain black. It's hard to tell in the dim light. The messages continue, some related to the ones above, some not. It's hard not for me to assume things.

I'm not going to assume the worst. Instead, i try to collect my feelings and thoughts as I think this through as realistically as possible.

"Mason." I get up and shake him awake. His eyes snap open and he immediately becomes alert. That is quick.

"What's wrong?" He sits upright as he starts to put on his shirt.

"First off, I wasn't going through your texts. I thought this was my phone. Still, I couldn't help noticing about these texts. I didn't read all of them, but the first ones caught my attention. Did you make a bet with your friends to see if you could get in my pants?" The words sound awfully bad as I say them. It doesn't come out the way I want it to.

He's silent momentarily before responding. I watch as his defensive walls are solidified. He replies shortly,  "They're not about you. I know what you're thinking. It's about something else. I can't exactly say what."

"Oh really?" I do not sound convinced at all. He looks me straight in the eyes. Yet, I know that this dude can do and say anything without meaning it at all. He's still an enigma.

"Yes. I swear." Frustration leaks into his voice as he tries to convince me.

"Whatever." I grab my jacket, socks, and shoes along with a bag of marshmallows. "I'll let you do what you do. See you at school."

"Dels..." he reaches out to grab me once more. I shrug him off and walk strongly to the door. I do not falter as I open the door and leave.

"Delany, at least be reasonable. It's 4 in the morning. The sun has not risen yet. Plus, you don't have a ride back." He grumbles and tries to talk some sense into me. I am quite sensible.

"My ride." I hold up a ring of keys and twirl it around my fingers.

"Oh hold on a second..." he starts to approach me, but I slam the front door before he can reach me. Right in his face.

I rush over to his car before remembering he brought us with his motorcycle. Well, I'm glad Allen bought a motorcycle a while back and taught me how to ride it. Actually, he forced me to learn because it was a survival skill.

Bless you Allen.

I turn the key into ignition and hope I don't die.  I've only been on a motorcycle by myself two times. And the motorcycle was a lot more different than the one Mason has.

"Delany. Don't you fucking dare..." Mason runs right in front of the bike.

"Uh..you're going to get run over." I look at him and the motorcycle. He's lucky I didn't actually start moving yet or else I would've run him right over. "And don't fucking give me orders." I snap right back at him.

His eyes narrow in a deadly glare. Then, he relaxes suddenly as his eyes clear of any emotion. "I'll bring you home. Please just get off of the bike. You're going to hurt yourself." He sighs and gently comes over.

"Here. I'll call one of my brothers to pick me up." and maybe even beat you up a bit. I start to dial their numbers and hope they are awake.

I start with Allen, knowing he's not too much of a deep sleeper compared to the twins. Plus, maybe he'll be up playing video games or something. It's a weekend and sometimes he does that, though not as often as before.

Mason grabs my phone and ends the call. "Here, just get on. Please.

"Fine, since you asked so nicely." I finally sigh. Plus, i didn't want to risk either crashing the motorcycle or crashing me.

I hesitantly get on the bike behind him, not wanting to get within a feet of him but not having the choice to back out. We head home in complete silence except for the wind blowing against our skin. The sun rises midway through our way back.

"Mason." I pat his shoulder. He slows down and cocks his head towards me.

"Yeah?"

"Can we stop really quick?"

We reach a clearing along the side of the road. There's a huge drop below us and all we see in front of us is water. The vast body of water is quite breathtaking as it reflects the sun.

I take out my phone to take a few pictures of the scene. I'm slightly sad I didn't bring my Canon camera. The sun peeks out of the water, coloring the sky with an assortment of colors. My fingers twitch in anticipation as I now want to get home and paint this scene

I hear the sound of a picture snap. Looking to the right, there's a flash that goes off once more.

"Hey!" I lift up my fingers to my face to hide it from the blinding flash.

"Beautiful." Mason smiles as he brings his phone down to his side. He gives me an actual true smile that I have been aching to see all these years. The smile that lights up his face and gives me butterflies. The smile that I used to see before he changed. I miss that smile.

I probably look like crap since I got up immediately after I woke up. I didn't get time to rinse my face or get ready.  "Do I hear a cheesy line coming?"

"No." Mason's lips tighten into a thin line and he stares at me. His dark eyes hold an indescribable emotion. He beckons me over to him as he sits on his bike.

I hesitate. Every little thing I do can change our relationship. Then again, what exactly is Mason and I? He is a no-strings attached type of guy, while I am just lost and clueless. Mason knows what he wants and gets it

"Dels, you're thinking too much in that little head of yours." Mason comes over and clasps my fingers in his.

"Don't think. Just live in the moment." He brings his arms around my waist as I lean into his chest. This is nice.

"Relax." He whispers, his breath caressing my ear. I stare down at his muscular and rough hands covering mine. I am saddened at the sight of his callused knuckles, the scars all over his hands. I remember way back when his slim fingers were blemish-free.

Just enjoy this moment. Treasure it. I tell myself. I sigh and relax into his arms. He always manages to soothe the turmoil of thoughts in my mind.

We stay like that for a little bit before he brings me back home. This time, our silence is comfortable.

"Hey," Mason speaks up as I gather my belongings and start to head towards my house.

"Hey." I cock my head to the side a bit, not completely sure what his intentions are.

There's a brief pause before he says, "I'll see you at school on Monday. Talk to you later." Those weren't the words I wanted to hear. Those weren't the words he was going to say.

"Yeah, I'll see you at school." I nod curtly before leaving him.

I enter my house and slide against the door after I close it. Peeking through the side curtains, I see Mason standing outside next to his bike. He looks down at the ground for a while before looking up at my house. HIs fists on each side of him are tightly curled. There's something bothering that boy and I want to find out what.

I climb back upstairs and into my room, throwing myself onto the bed. A small smile forms as I catch a whiff of his cologne in my borrowed clothes.

Oh Mason, what shall I ever do about you? You make girls swoon. I guess I'm not as strong as I thought I was.

I lay on my bed thinking about him. I don't forget the texts he received. I also don't forget the illegal fighting.

I'm going to save him. I owe him that much. Plus, a little selfish thought in me is doing this for myself.
