The dungeons of the palace were located under the south wing of the castle, far from the royal's quarters. Many cells were full of mer who had committed horrible crimes and were paying for them.
One mer in particular was held in a cell further away from others to prevent socialization. She had chains around her wrists and a collar on her neck which prevented the use of magic. She was dangerous, so dangerous that no one dared to go near her cell.
Except one mer.
Once everybody in the palace was alseep, a hooded figure made their way to the dungeons. The guards on post lifted their spears when they saw them, but after seeing their face, they allowed them to pass.
One guard escorted them all the way to the cell which held the dangerous one. The lower they went, the colder and darker it got due to the dungeon being so deep in the sea. The hooded mer could barely see, only having a torch of waterfire to light the way.
"Chungha." She called out when she saw the sad exterior of the mermaid.
The said mermaid looked up slowly, smirking when the other mer lifted her hood. Her short brown hair floated around her head
"Boyoung. What a surprise." She said weakly. "You look good."
"You don't," the sister replied bluntly. Chungha just chuckled at her response.
"You know, sister. After all these years, I never thought that I'd be speaking to you from a cell."
"Well, did you actually think you would beat us? We Parks have more power as a family. You stood no chance." Chungha weakly scoffed at that.
"You were a Kim first, Boyoung. Don't forget that. Don't underestimate the strength of a Kim."
"How could I? I grew up watching Mother and Father rule our kingdom," Boyoung quickly stated. "And, for a Kim, you don't sound so strong yourself, sister."
"That's because of your son! He placed me in this dark hole! And I get one piece of kelp a day," Chungha spoke with disgust. As she thought about it more, a look of realization crossed her face.
"What?" Her sister questioned, wondering why Chungha made that face.
"He won't let me die on an empty stomach will he? It's hard to tell. Even the humans let prisoners get one last meal, but he's unpredictable now."
"Yeah. You did that to him! You killed his father!"
"He killed my love!" Chungha retaliated.
"Well, you didn't have to kill mine," Boyoung said, sliding down slowly til she finally sat at the same level as her sister. "My Hyungsik," she whispered to herself in pain.
Chungha tried not to care, she really did.
But she was still her sister.
"I didn't mean to get you banished," Boyoung whispered.
"But you did--"
"But not purposefully!" Boyoung interrupted, "I was just a guppy, I didn't know that guy was a stranger. I didn't know what would happen when I was telling him those things! I didn't know any of this would happen!"
~~~
"Hey, little girl!"
A young Boyoung turned around, seeing a man who she hadn't seen before. She was confused, but she was taught that a princess had to be nice to her people.
"Hello! I am Princess Boyoung of Azharei."
"I know! I'm a friend of your father's! I missed the last meeting about the kingdom affairs, can you fill me in?"
Boyoung figured that since the mer was a friend of her father's, then it would be alright to repeat what she heard in the advisor meeting.
So she did.
Weeks later, the merman was bounded, kneeling in front of Royal Couple with guards behind him.
"A spy, huh? Tell me. Where did you get your information from?" King Park asked. The spy laughed, confusing the royal couple.
"What's so funny?" The queen questioned him, not understanding the joke.
"Who told me? Who told me?" He laughed maniacally, "Your daughter! She told me everything! She didn't even hesitate!"
The King and Queen's eyes rose with fear as the guards took the crazy spy away to the dungeons to await trial. They looked at eachother with sad eyes before storming to their daughter's quarters with 2 guards.
"Chungha! How could you?!" Her father yelled as they burst through the door of seaweed. The young mer was sitting on her bed of anemones, combing her beautiful dark brown hair with a coral, so she was shocked when they busted in. When she finally processed what was said, confusion graced her face. Her father saw the look and got even angrier.
"How could I what?"
"Don't play stupid, Chungha! This was supposed to your kingdom in the future! How could you share our secrets?"
"Father, what are you talking about?" But they didn't answer, the king just looked to the guards and nodded, signaling for them to grab his daughter. "What? Unhand me! Mother, what is happening?!"
The Queen couldn't answer her daughter, instead she looked down, ashamed of what she brought into the world.
"Take her away." She spoke instead, the words making Chungha's heart crumble.
"Leave her outside the gates," the King spoke for the last time, turning and leaving the room.
"What? Father!" Chungha tried to tell him, but he didn't listen. Instead, the guards did as told and threw her out of the kingdom, leaving her adolescent self to fend for her life all alone in the gigantic world of the ocean.
~~~
"You got banished because of me and now you're gonna die and it's all my fault--"
"No," Chungha interrupted her crying sister. She couldn't watch the pearls fall out of her eyes any longer. "I'm dying because I killed the king. And as much as I want to blame you for that...this is all on me."
"W-What do you mean?" Boyoung asked, wiping her eyes.
"When I heard you were the new Queen, I could've just come back and notified you of my wellbeing. Maybe you would've allowed me back in then, but instead, I plotted against you even though I knew you just made a guppy mistake. I was just so angry that you were the position that was my birthright. You got everything I wanted at my expense," Chungha shook her head. "I could've come back peacefully if I wanted to, if I didn't let my anger consume me. So yeah, it's my fault that I'm here. Not yours."
The words only seemed to make Boyoung cry harder, she gripped onto the bars of the cell as she let the pearls fall around her. She quickly got up and turned towards the guard demanding that he open the cell.
Once it was open, she rushed in and hugged her sister, who wasn't expecting it. Even with her bound arms, she tried her best to hug back.
"It's okay, Bo. It's okay," she comforted her as a thought passed her mind. "Hey, I need you to do something for me."
~~~
She wasn't going to lie, she was scared.
Cetus was an ancient myth that apparently dwelled deep in the pacific ocean. The whale like creature was actually sent by Poseidon to devour Andromeda in ancient times.
Chungha would very much not like to spend the rest of her days in the belly of a whale, but this is her punishment. To be consumed, and eventually die, by Cetus.
A lot of mer, including the royal family and friends, were present to see the former queen-to-be meet her end.
"People of Azharei," Jimin began, but Chungha didn't hear the rest. Instead she focused on her memories, from Boyoung's birth to them playing as guppies, to the heartbreaking banishment from her home. Meeting the sea witch, learning magic, experiencing land, meeting Taehyung's father and having Taehyung.
She liked to believe she led a good life before starting the rebellion.
But something good did come out of starting the rebellion: meeting Sunghoon, the love of her life.
And as she was being tied to an anchor, she remembered how she felt when she met him, when they became friends, when they first kissed, all the memories leading up to his demise. A smile graced her lips. The mer who could see her face was confused, why was she smiling when she was about to die?
But it was okay, because this wasn't the end for her, she knew.
She was once again thrown out of the kingdom, this time with an anchor tied to her tail. She free fell down deep through the dark waters, not even noticing the huge creature who dwelled in the space below.
As she watched bubbles float around her, she realized that she wasn't scared. Everything she did lead up to this moment.
This moment which she finally found the peace she hoped for for so long. She didn't find it in starting a war. She didn't find it in killing the King of the kingdom that was supposed to be hers. She found it from the interaction she didn't know she needed, the confrontation with her sister.
The last thing she thought about before she was swallowed in darkness was hugging her sister.
And it put another smile on her face.
