Stanford Calling
The cavalcade entered the campus, proceeding ceremoniously up the driveway, which caused quite a stir with everyone. Members of the faculty whose presence were required that morning had been informed beforehand that some foreign dignitary was coming to visit, and were curious as to who it was.
Aamir's security men alighted from their vehicles, entering the main hall, inspecting every single floor, before Aamir could even set his feet upon the stone pathway leading up to it. The others remained with Aamir and his mother, making sure they were safe.
Once given the all-clear, Aamir and his mother alighted from the vehicle. The dean and his young assistant stood at the foot of the steps leading up into the main hall of the administrative building, ready to receive them.
"Welcome Ms. Marsenas. Welcome Your Royal Highness" The dean kindly shook Helena's hand and bowed to the prince, who acknowledged him quietly with a nod. "It's such a pleasure knowing that you will be staying with us, Your Highness. I am certain the facilities here are acceptable to you" The man gushed proudly.
"Thank you kindly, Dean Winthrop. I'm sure they are" Aamir said with a smile. Aamir was dressed formally from head to toe in his national costume, which consisted of a Thobe (royal robes) and his Keffiyeh (headdress) which was partially wrapped around his face, although they couldn't really distinguish his features with exception of his astonishingly green eyes.
"This is Kaden, our head boy. He'll show you around as soon as you're ready" He spoke, indicating the young man beside him to come forward. The dean then left Kaden, to escort Aamir. But before Kaden could even extend his hand in a handshake, Mohamed swooped down on the unsuspecting Kaden, plastering the frightened young man to the wall, and subsequently frisking him.
"That was highly unnecessary, Mohamed" Aamir pulled his head of security aside, and spoke quietly.
"Yes, Your Highness, my apologies" Mohamed let a shocked Kaden go. The poor boy nearly fainted from the ordeal.
"I must apologize, Kaden. My guards are only doing their duties, but they mean you no harm, I assure you" Aamir reassured the young man who stood before him, shaking like a leaf.
"Nnnn...oooo...of course not" Kaden gulped, surreptitiously tugging at the collar of his button-down shirt.
"Please continue. Where will I be staying?" Aamir was curious, looking past the young Kaden's shoulders.
"You'll be staying at one of the fraternity houses on campus" Kaden began to say.
"Absolutely not! He'll be staying at one of the men's dormitories on campus. He's just a freshman. Aren't freshmen supposed to stay in the dormitories until their sophomore year? I recall moving to my sorority house only in my sophomore year..." Helena reminded Aamir, while staring at Kaden in disbelief.
"Umm...the dormitories are being upgraded with new facilities, Ms. Marsenas. Only the fraternity and sorority houses remain open for now" Kaden replied.
"But why?" Helena gaped.
"The older dormitories required a new coat of paint, upgraded student facilities, faster internet, better canteens..." Kaden indicated, while waiting for Aamir to emerge from the men's room.
"That being said, a new sector of male and female dormitories is being constructed, but won't be ready while His Highness is here, so, the dean suggested he stay at one of the fraternity houses, Ms. Marsenas" Kaden nodded.
"Okay...I guess it's worth a shot, but I would like to look into the backgrounds of these fraternities before I decide which one is best for my son..." Helena began to speak, but broke off when Aamir interrupted his mother.
Helena stared at Aamir in total shock when he re-emerged, dressed as an ordinary student in a long-sleeved shirt, with the sleeves casually rolled up and a pair of dressy jeans. Aamir had insisted on bringing his carryall with him, and now Helena knew why.
Mohamed and his team had successfully shielded Aamir from prying eyes, since they disappeared around the building, having made their way across the campus by another route.
Helena stood back and allowed her son to ask Kaden more questions, as they walked along. Helena thought to herself 'Hmm, it appears my son has truly grown up', wondering exactly what Aamir was up to. She smiled softly to herself, quietly observing Aamir's interactions with Kaden.
"I've already taken the opportunity to do some research and I think, no, I believe that Lambda Phi Epsilon might be more appropriate for me" Aamir had insisted, during their walk.
Aamir had commanded Mohamed and the rest of the security team to stay back, and allow him to have some 'breathing' space. Aamir had actually informed the dean and his assistant, Kaden, that he would be attending the university, incognito, as a normal Middle Eastern student, and not as a prince of royalty. Helena had no notion that her son was going to pull something like this.
Kaden was quite taken with the young prince's gentle demeanour and handsome face. He was equally taken by Aamir's decisions regarding his chosen fraternity, which championed inclusivity and diversity in serving and supporting the Asian / Eastern communities. Aamir needed to be around people who thought the way he did, and would make him feel comfortable in his own skin.
As a teenager growing up, he never let it be known that he was gay. He already knew how his father would react, let alone the entire Muslim community. He had considered coming out to his brother, Tarek, but thought it best to wait, until he himself understood his own feelings and what it really meant to be gay. He hoped that his sexual orientation would not pose a problem for anyone, let alone the designated fraternity he had chosen. It was a gamble, but he was willing to take the risk.
"I must say, you look rather fetching in your outfit, your High..." Kaden coughed, when Aamir shook his head, warning him not to slip up. "Khalil..." Kaden continued.
'Khalil?' Aamir's mother mouthed, raising an eyebrow at her son's new name.
"Yes, Khalil Ibrahim, you got my name right" Aamir smirked.
"Well, if Kaden doesn't mind, I'd like to have a word...with my son...Khalil...Ibrahim..." Helena crossed her arms, staring at her son pointedly.
"Of course, I'll be over there if you need me" Kaden politely excused himself.
"Are you out of your mind?" Helena whispered, angrily, "Passing yourself off as a 'normal' human being when you know damn well..."
"I know, mother. No one except you, the dean and Kaden, and of course, my security team, know who I really am. The perfect disguise, don't you think?" Aamir beamed.
Helena gently drew her palm over her face, shaking her head 'NO' as she did so.
"Alright...fine. But if something happens, you'd better get on your cell phone and call me, understand?" Helena jabbed him in the ribs with her elbow.
"Ow...fine, mother..." Aamir grimaced, rubbing his side.
A little bit further, they had come upon Aamir's chosen place-of-stay. Mohamed set his luggage down within the atrium. The house was quiet, since the other students were still attending classes. Aamir dismissed Mohamed, and the team made their way back to their limousines to await his mother's return.
"You've been assigned to one of the rooms upstairs, with the big bay windows overlooking the football field" Kaden added, as they headed up the stairs with Aamir, who seemed perfectly capable of carrying his luggage, much to Mohamed's dismay.
"Tarek would have loved this!" Aamir exclaimed, upon entering his room, having taken in the spectacular view.
"Thank you so much, Kaden! Now, I must unpack!" He gleefully remarked, as Kaden left him alone.
"Promise me, first sign of trouble, you'll call me, okay?" Helena hugged her youngest son.
"I promise" Aamir hugged her back...
