CHAPTER 3
Aadaya squinted at her computer screen, utterly fed up with her friends' juvenile shenanigans. The room was quieter than a library on a Sunday morning, except for the dynamic duo on the screen who were laughing their heads off like a couple of hyenas. These so-called pals of hers, a bunch of jokers she was now second-guessing her life choices over, shamelessly ribbed her and cackled like maniacs.
Their uproarious laughter echoed from the computer screen as they gleefully roasted their friend. On the screen, a strikingly pale and beautiful girl was hanging upside down on a sofa, dressed in comically red shorts and a cartoon-themed shirt. She would have passed for a snow fairy, had it not been for her rather peculiar attire. And her laughter? Well, it could give a pirate's hearty "Yo-ho-ho" a run for its doubloons. Meanwhile, on the other screen, an olive-skinned chap with freckles galore and a mop of unruly brown hair sat there, seemingly frozen, showing no inclination to join the riotous laughter.
Aadaya's relief was short-lived as she turned her attention back to Chris and uttered, "Thank you, Chris, for being the voice of reason..." But just as she said it, the computer screen unexpectedly flopped backward, revealing the true Chris, clutching his stomach as he laughed like a man possessed. It turned out that her dear friend Chris had craftily concealed his mirth by placing a piece of paper over the screen. Aadaya should have known not to expect any more from this zany bunch. The comedic sequence played out flawlessly, and Aadaya found herself laughing along with them.
Suddenly, her surroundings transformed into a lush, purple paradise, adorned with walls adorned with cuddly stuffed animals like pandas, giraffes, mice, and more. Chris, still convulsing with laughter, rolled around on his bed until he hilariously tumbled off it. "Ouch..." came the agonized cry from the screen, sending Aadaya into further fits of giggles. Saddie could be seen wiping tears of laughter from her eyes. Aadaya couldn't resist a jibe, "That's what you get for being as thick as a brick!, Chris!"
Chris shot back, his laughter unabated, "Hey, at least I don't have a bedroom that screams 'panda princess' at the top of its lungs..." Aadaya felt a sudden urge to dig a hole and bury herself alive as her friends continued to laugh uproariously.
But try as she might, Aadaya couldn't resist the allure of their laughter, which sounded like a donkey auditioning for a comedy show. She burst into laughter and took a moment to survey the bedroom's peculiar walls. There was the panda decked out in royal attire, looking like it had crash-landed from a pandas-only costume party in another dimension. She couldn't help but wonder who dreamed up this outrageous décor and why on earth it existed.
Just when Aadaya thought she could regain her composure, Saddie playfully greeted Chris, "Well, hello there, Chris..." Her hand waved theatrically at the panda monarch on the wall. Once again, Aadaya dissolved into fits of laughter at their sidesplitting antics. Chris and Saddie were like a comedy duo, and their exchanges were a comedy goldmine, featuring a repertoire of creative name-calling and playful jibes.
Chris and Saddie were like a comedy duo in full swing. Chris, in response to Saddie's wave at the giraffe on the wall, quipped with his trademark wit, "Well, hello, Saddie, nice dress..." as he gestured toward the wall's long-necked fashionista. And just like that, the banter erupted into a symphony of hilarious insults and curses that would make a sailor blush.
But then, as if out of nowhere, Saddie shot Chris a venomous sneer and spat, "Shut up, you fart-faced..." Her face turned redder than a lobster at a sauna, and her eyes flashed with murderous intent. If only she could have leaped through the screen to give Chrissy a piece of her mind. If she were a real human, there would have been steam pouring out of her ears.
In a retaliatory tone, Chris replied with the most obnoxious, bratty girl voice known to mankind, saying, "You look like a melted wax candle..." His voice had Aadaya's eardrums practically begging for mercy. Sometimes, as she gazed upon this comedic spectacle, she seriously questioned her life choices. Did she really need friends? And, out of all possible friends, why had fate blessed her with these two?
Such was the routine of her daily life – playing witness to their amusing squabbles. She couldn't help but laugh; they were her primary source of happiness for as long as she could remember. In their presence, she felt free to laugh, smile, and just be herself, which happened quite frequently. "You seem to be having a blast over there..." Saddie called out to her. Chris redirected his attention her way. "Yeah, this place is pretty cool. It's like my inner Zen master is in control," she remarked with a smirk. They both paused whatever argument they were having, momentarily tearing their attention from each other to focus on her. Chris raised an eyebrow and inquired, "Well, that's a surprise. Has your inner Zen master been hibernating all this time?"
I could practically feel my heart pounding as I prepared to drop this bombshell on them. It was a now-or-never kind of moment, and I was counting on their support. Taking a deep breath, I locked eyes with them through the screen and announced, "Today..." Their attention was firmly fixed on me, but they continued with their tasks. There was a pregnant pause, and then Chrissy, still shuffling through his files, nonchalantly asked, "What's up?" Meanwhile, Saddie unleashed her inner snack enthusiast, tearing into a colossal bag of nachos.
I hesitated for a moment, my courage waning, but I knew I had to spill the beans. "I met my mate," I finally blurted out, waiting anxiously for their reaction. Suddenly, a shriek from the computer shattered the tranquility of the room. I glanced at the screen to witness the spectacle – they were frozen in absurd shock, eyes as wide as saucers. Saddie, with her mouth agape, looked poised to shove an entire nacho mountain into her mouth. And Chris? Well, he let out a scream that could have rivaled any horror movie scream queen, his mouth open not for nachos, mind you.
In perfect comedic harmony, they both screamed at the screen, "What?!" A silence so deafening you could hear a mouse hiccup filled the room. I counted to three in my head, mentally preparing for the impending chaos. Saddie dramatically launched her nachos into orbit, while it seemed like Chris was preparing to send his computer monitor on a one-way trip to the moon, all while they continued their frenzied questioning.
Desmond, Saddie's hapless younger cousin, made a valiant attempt to rescue the screen from her clutches. But Saddie, in her true monstrous form, responded by giving him a swift kick in the gut, all while maintaining her conversation with the screen. Meanwhile, Chris, despite his witchy beliefs, was fervently praying as if a higher power could rescue him from this madness.
The situation had spiraled into utter chaos, and I wondered if it had ever been in my control to begin with. Could I have ever predicted this? Just as they both paused to catch their breath, they simultaneously bellowed, "We're coming there!" And then, their screen went black. I couldn't help but contemplate the sheer horror of their impending arrival. I was left utterly speechless, searching for words that simply refused to emerge. What on earth could be more important than the arrival of these two comically uncontrollable forces?
Suddenly, the unmistakable sound of a cup crashing to the ground shattered the silence. I turned around to find my aunt and the Luna standing there, their expressions mirroring my speechless astonishment. Luna, ever the comedian, broke the awkward silence with a deadpan remark, "Well... I should probably start preparing for some very interesting guests... wow." Her eyes remained fixed on me, and the atmosphere grew more awkward by the second.
As soon as those mischievous troublemakers vacated my room, I felt an overwhelming sense of shame that made me want to do something drastic. I had this wild urge to scream like a banshee, punch the air like a deranged kangaroo, and maybe even consider plotting their comical demise. So, what did I do? I turned to my unsuspecting pillows and commenced a full-on pummeling session, as if they were my arch-nemesis in this embarrassing saga. And then, with my head nestled in those now-battered pillows, I unleashed a scream so mighty, it would put a Viking war cry to shame.
Oh, how I yearned to unleash my wrath upon those pranksters, to obliterate their embarrassing shenanigans from the annals of history. But let's face it, this wasn't the first rodeo. They had made it their life's mission to keep the comedy gold flowing, and clearly, they were nailing it. As I roamed around my room, muttering curses directed at my thoroughly messed-up friends, I couldn't help but raise my arms in a dramatic display of frustration, growling like a bear – a cute one, mind you.
After a day of having my dignity taken on a rollercoaster ride by these jokers, I flopped onto my bed. I stared at the ceiling, a profound sense of boredom washing over me. My work for the company was all neatly tied up for the day, but the ever-looming pile of paperwork for tomorrow cast a gloomy shadow over my mood.
With nothing but my own thoughts for company, I found myself drawn to the best feature of my room – the colossal window. A soft breeze crept in, coaxing the elegant white curtains into a dance that would make a ballerina jealous. I gazed outside, my eyes fixed on the boys engaged in an epic soccer showdown. The peaceful atmosphere of the pack offered solace from the storm of emotions inside.
My attention drifted to the group of boys, huddled together and chattering away. And then, I spotted him, the one thing I could spot from a mile away, no matter where I was. A sense of calm washed over me as I watched him break away from the pack. The sunlight cast a perfectly dramatic shadow on his face, and his blond hair shimmered as if it had a secret contract with the glitter industry. His eyes were nothing short of a masterpiece, their pupils dilating as he moved away. I could never quite get used to the way his eyes made me feel when they locked onto me, like a squirrel caught in the headlights of a particularly charming car.
As I kept my watchful eye on my mate, he suddenly turned away from the group of boys, and out of nowhere, a ball came hurtling toward his head, accompanied by some taunting words. In the blink of an eye, my mate transformed into his majestic white wolf. The tranquil, peaceful evening transformed into a horrifying nightmare as he lunged at the boy who had thrown the ball. Like a switch being flipped, chaos erupted as he started attacking everyone in his vicinity. I watched in sheer terror, knowing that he didn't have much time before he unleashed his powers. His Ikanir, the ancient and formidable wolf power, began to emanate a faint, ominous glow.
The Alpha and a boy named Ryan, who had fallen earlier, attempted to calm him down, but a feral Ikanir wolf was beyond anyone's control. My feet felt like blocks of ice as I observed the unfolding calamity before me. I was paralyzed, unable to do anything. If I were to approach him, he would undoubtedly discover my true identity as his mate. On the other hand, if I did nothing, a potential massacre loomed on the horizon.
My feet seemed to have a mind of their own as they propelled me forward, racing down the hall. It was as if my wolf had taken the reins of my human body, pushing me toward the back door. I reached the back porch, but my body seemed to have its own agenda, stopping abruptly and leaving me utterly helpless.
From my vantage point, I watched as the Alpha, the Beta, and Ryan desperately attempted to halt the relentless assault. Meanwhile, the rest of the pack members scrambled to aid the injured warriors, their numbers growing by the second. His wolf continued to strike and growl menacingly at anyone who dared approach. My body remained frozen in place as I bore witness to the gruesome scene he had unleashed, all while remaining blissfully unaware of his extraordinary powers.
I stood there in absolute shock, unable to tear my eyes away from the harrowing scene unfolding before me. The Alpha, Beta, and Ryan desperately tried to restrain my mate's ferocious wolf, while the rest of the pack members rushed to the aid of the dozen injured warriors, along with the handful of boys who had become casualties. His wolf, a towering and monstrous presence at seven feet, continued to attack and growl menacingly at anyone who dared to approach.
My body felt frozen in place, rooted to the spot as I witnessed the catastrophic consequences of my mate's transformation, all the while oblivious to his extraordinary powers.
As I stood there, shell-shocked and overwhelmed by the unfolding chaos, a gentle breeze swept through, causing my thigh-length hair to cascade over my eyes. The breeze carried my scent toward the raging wolf. The colossal creature halted, sniffing the air as it caught a whiff of my presence. The pack members held their breath, watching with bated anticipation as they prayed for their Alpha to regain control over his wolf.
The wolf turned its head and gazed with an almost mesmerized expression at the figure standing on the porch. My hair shone red, bathed in the fading rays of the dusk, and it flowed in harmony with the breeze. I stared back at the wolf with wide, doe-like eyes. Its attention seemed completely ensnared by my presence. It took a tentative step toward me, but then suddenly, it crumpled to the ground, crashing unceremoniously.
The pack members watched, perplexed, as their future Alpha lay unconscious on the ground. A shiver ran down my spine, as if I were being watched. I turned my gaze to the onlookers and saw Ryan observing me with keen interest. He began to walk toward his Alpha, trying to piece together what had transpired between me and his Alpha and friend. Our eyes locked, both of us assessing each other, and that's when I realized I wasn't wearing my mask.
Panic surged through me as I instinctively brought my hands up to my face, eyes wide with alarm. Without wasting a moment, I retreated inside, hiding my true identity, I left behind a wolf lying unconscious on the ground, and a web of mysteries yet to be unravelled...
