Chapter 1: New Life

Pain.

Intense burning pain.

I don't remember screaming, but I can faintly recall looking to my arm, where a giant, bloody, bite mark could be seen.

Everything had gone black for an undefined period of time, and then I woke up again.

That's where my story starts.

------------

My eyes open slowly and a dull moan escapes my lips. I stumble to my feet, seeing the things around me in a dull haze.

I see a few forms stumbling around a little ways down the hall, and I go after them at a slow gait.

I try to speak, but my throat only makes another groan.

The weird looking things ahead of me continue down the hall, paying me no heed. I follow them, unsure of what to do or what's going on. Then, suddenly, this smell hits my nose. It's warm and fresh, a hint of iron mixed in. My eyes blaze and I head towards it, suddenly ravenous.

There's about three other creatures crowded around the dead body of a blonde woman. I collapse to my knees, gripping her arm in my hands and biting into her. She tastes delicious, warm and juicy, and I eat until I feel full.

The other guys clear out. I stumble to a window, licking the blood off my lips. Outside, everything is in chaos. Fires burn, sirens wail, and the screams of humanity can be heard. I stand and watch the carnage in a stupefied awe.

There's a small groan behind me. I turn to see the blonde woman's body moving.

I move towards her, watching as her eyes open. They're a milky grey colour, dead and filmy. I stare at her, curious.

"Do you know what's going on?" I try to ask.

Once again, a snarl is the only sound I make. She moans and gets to her feet, stumbling away. I follow her, unsure of everything. Maybe she knows where she's going.

Loud screams pierce the air and I hear thundering footsteps. The blonde woman ahead of me snarls, moving towards the noise.

I stop. Something tells me that that sound isn't good.

My fears are confirmed when the woman's head is suddenly blown apart by a barrage of gunfire. She collapses like a stone, the sound of her weight hitting the floor emanating in the empty hall.

"Got it! Damn, these zombies are everywhere!" a voice hollers.

"Oh...so I'm a zombie?" I wonder.

I turn and rush down the empty hallways, hearing the footsteps behind me getting closer. Whoever they are, they don't want to be friends. I know that much.

I know I have to get out of this building, but how? Where?

But the one question that burns in the back of my mind dominates above all else.

"What's going on?"
