Chapter 1: I Have A Plan

Bryn

You were the only one we were able to get out.

The sentence repeated itself in Bryn's mind as the gravity of the situation finally sunk in. Her legs felt unstable beneath her, the ground felt like it was shaking. Overhead lightning crackled across black clouds, making the other demigods around her shift uneasily.

"Why don't you come with me and Alec to the infirmary where we can check your injuries and ask anything you want?" Isabelle suggested. Bryn nodded, slowly lowering her weapon but not gripping it any less. She still didn't trust these people, especially the one named Alec who still had his bow pointed at her. Watching him carefully, Bryn walked past him after Isabelle back to where she'd woken up. There she sat on her bed while her new acquaintance removed her neck brace. Isabelle gently felt Bryn's neck to check if the swelling had gone down.

"Where-" Bryn began to say but stopped when her voice croaked out.

"Looks like your adrenaline wore off. I was amazed you were able to speak at all to us so I'm not surprised that it's giving out now. Here's some nectar and ambrosia. That should help. We've tried giving you some over the past couple of days but it was hard since you were unconscious.

"Days?" Bryn wheezed out.

"You've been out for four days. So who was that guy strangling you?"

Bryn took a sip of the nectar before answer. Even the small drink was enough to make her voice clearer. "Luke Jackson. My boyfriend."

"You might want to consider breaking up with him," Isabelle stated, placing the neck brace back on Bryn's neck. "Just another day. It should be fine tomorrow."

"He's possessed at the moment by an Eidolon. It was the Eidolon choking me. Luke is the one who stopped it and told you to get me out of there. Speaking of that place, where exactly was it?"

"Bannerman Castle up in New York," she answered.

"Then why am I in Brazil and why did Brady come to you?"

"You don't remember us?"

"No...?"

"Told you," Alec muttered.

"Ignore him. He's just grumpy," Isabelle said while Bryn glowered at him. "Brady and Bradley came to us when you were fighting Hannah asking us to join your camp in New York in the battle. We planned on it but ended up having our own battle here."

"I'm sorry. I have no memory of them telling me they came to you," Bryn admitted.

"Shocker," Alec said.

Bryn snapped. "I fought a massive war, fell into Tartarus, died, and then was resurrected, so pardon me if I don't quite remember everything that's happened the past few years,"

"You fell into Tartarus?" Isabelle asked in shock.

Bryn nodded, saying, "Luke, Silena, Derek, and I did. It was just supposed to be me but then Luke stole back his curse from me and in trying to save each other, we all fell down into the hole."

"Why was there a hole open to Tartarus in the first place?" Alec questioned, sounding doubtful of the entire story.

"Because Derek and Hallie opened a portal to it so we could push Hannah down it."

"Who in Hades' name is Hannah?"

"Tartarus's daughter. Look, I'm not here to talk about my time down there. I need to find a way to rescue my friends."

"We can go back to Bannerman's Castle, see if they're still there," Isabelle offered.

"No, first I need to find a way to get the Eidolons out of my family. Do you have a library here? Or a phone?"

"Just because we live in the middle of the jungle doesn't mean we have no modern technology," Alec retorted.

"I didn't mean it like that. I meant if you had a phone nearby I could use to call my teacher."

"Here, use mine. We'll leave you to talk in private. Besides, I need to have a word with my brother," Isabelle said, handing Bryn her cellphone. The siblings walked out of the infirmary while Bryn dialed Chiron. He answered on the second ring.

"Hi Chiron, it's Bryn," she greeted tiredly.

"My dear, it's so good to hear from you. I was expecting you all to be back by now. We've been worried," he replied. "Are you all okay?"

"Not really... I'm currently in South America at Tribo do Divino with a neck brace on because Luke tried to strangle me but it wasn't actually Luke but an Eidolon named Baltazar. Derek and Bradley are possessed too by Eidolons named Damianos and Phlegon. Hallie, Silena, and Brady are their hostages." Bryn proceeded to explain the entire quest to Chiron, starting with the strange shadow in Tennessee to the attack in Venezuela to their adventure in Russia to the betrayal in New Zealand. Chiron listened intently, not saying anything even when she was finished, prompting her to say, "Chiron? You still there?"

"You've gotten yourself into quite the situation."

"That's putting it mildly. I'm searching for a way to get the Eidolons out of the boys because I have a feeling my Charmspeak won't work on these particular ones. I have plan though."

"Why do I get the feeling I'm not going to like this plan?"

"Probably because you're not. Have you ever heard of Amara?"

"Good gods, you're not thinking about finding her are you?"

"Yes, why? Who is she?"

"She's the leader of the Eidolons. Baltasar, Phlegon, and Damianos were her loyal guards who would go to the ends of the earth for her. There's nothing they would not do for her."

"That's the thing, she wants nothing to do with them. I overheard them talking about her and apparently she wants no part in their plan. If I could at least convince her to tell me a way to get them out of Luke, Derek, and Bradley, we'd all be better off. It can't hurt to at least try and if there's anyone more qualified to deal with evil immortal beings, it's me. Chiron, please, I'm desperate. Where is she?"

He sighed. It was obvious he didn't want to tell her but that he knew her plan was the only one they had. "I'll tell you if you promise me two things."

"Sure."

"Take two other demigods with you. I know you're strong and deadly but with Tartarus still affecting you, you need people there to help. Second, whatever you do, make Amara swear on the Styx about anything you ask of her to prevent her from lying because she's an artist at twisting the truth in her favour."

"I promise," Bryn told him reluctantly, not happy about the first condition since she didn't trust anyone at this camp she was at.

"Palenque, Mexico. She's in one of the undiscovered temples at the ruins there. I'm not sure which one but you'll certainly know it when you come across it. Her aura... just trust me dear."

"Great. Thank you Chiron. Are you going to tell Annabeth and Percy?"

"Someone should. I'll tell your parents and the Michaels, too. I'll try and prevent them from coming after you but I can't make any promises about that."

"I got everyone into this mess by dragging them into Tartarus with me. I need to be the one to fix it."

"You bear the weight of the world on your shoulders. One day you need to learn that you don't have to."

"That day won't be happening any time soon. I'll keep in touch." Bryn hung up and went to find Alec and Isabelle. They were standing outside the infirmary waiting for her.

"I need to go to Palenque, Mexico to get the information I need. I promised my teacher I'd take two demigods with me because I haven't exactly... been myself since Tartarus. Who would you recommend?" Bryn inquired.

"Alec and I will go. We're the best sword-fighter and archer here and besides, I'd like to see Brady again. We were having a riveting conversation about Caribbean islands before we arrived at Bannerman's Castle. Honestly, I'd like to talk about it again so I could convince him that Belize is better than Key West."

"I'm fine with you coming. I'm not so sure your brother is willing to go."

"I don't want to go with you but Izzy does and where she goes, I go," Alec said icily.

"Very well. We leave tomorrow," Bryn told them.

"Tomorrow? Your neck will have healed for the most part but if we happen to get in a fight with a monster or anything, one wrong move and you could injure it all over again. We should wait a couple days," Isabelle pointed out.

"My family can't wait. I can get us to the airport closest to Palenque, I just need a plane," Bryn stated. "Whether you come or not, I'm leaving tomorrow."

"You can fly?" Alec asked with raised eyebrows.

"I'm a Daughter of Zeus. I could fly myself there without a plane but with you two, that's not possible, so hence the plane."

"Okay you two, stop going at each other's throats. Bryn, I'll make a call to a friend of mine to see if we can charter a private plane. Alec, go get provisions ready. I'm going to go start packing."

Bryn gave one final glare at Alec before turning to "Time is of the essence. We leave at the crack of dawn."
