Chapter {14}
Using my strength in my arms I crawled through the vent on my stomach. My arm muscles and leg muscles contributing to pulling my body down the vent. I was already sweating in the confined space and it wasn't helping my heavy breathing as dirt coated the bottom of my arms and I was sure all over my pants.
I glanced down an intersecting vent to the one I had been crawling through for twenty minutes. Having no other decision but to go through the vents to get passed the locked doors. To determined to let an obstacle get in my way.
I looked at the map on my wrist again and saw Liz, Felix's and Lily's lights still giving off a pulse of their heart beat on the monitor. Thankful they were alright, I continued down. My shirt sleeve starting to tear the more I wore it down. My heart racing to get to where they all had gathered.
I turned right into another vent shaft and froze for a spilt second. My heart racing as horror struck my ears like the sound of a mirror breaking. Gunshots.
I started to crawl faster. Putting even more effort into it. My heart beat pounding in my ears. I closed my eyes in silent prayer for my teammates as I kept going. Like heck I would let one of my family get hurt on account of my efforts.
I looked down through an opening of the vent shaft that let light in as I peered through it. Dang it! I couldn't see a lick. I looked up and kept going, brushing my messy and sweaty hair out of my face as sweat lined my brow.
Lily...
After what seemed like forever the firing ceased, and I furrowed my brow. Most people would have been relieved to hear it stopped but it only made my stomach twist from worry. I saw a light from a clearing in the vents up ahead and quickly made my way over, my arm getting bruised in the process.
I let my eyes adjust to the light from the darkness of the vents and then pressed my face up against the cold bars of the vent clearing, looking down to see what was going on. I could hear voices. But what I saw was even worse.
Felix was being slammed to the ground and his hands roughly pulled behind his back as two men cuffed him. And I could see Liz's feet on the ground where she stood in the middle of the hall, already cuffed. But then I saw that familiar brunette hair and my eyes widened as one of the men slammed in her into the wall. I could see the fire in Lily's eyes as she glared at the man like daggers going right between his eyes.
She was pinned with her shoulders against the wall before she was able to make another swing or effort of escape, the front of her body pressed against the wall as she breathed heavily.
I narrowed my eyes without even realizing it. My fist had clenched around the bar of the vent as it took everything in my body to hold back my anger. If I went down there now, yes, I would have an advantage of surprise but it wouldn't take long for the seven of them to take me from all sides. No. I had to get them out. Another way.
I took a back up cellphone I had on me and put in a phone number.
"Twin number two. Get down here-gonna need some back up."
"You know? I'm actually the first born." Eric said with a huff when he answered the phone.
I couldn't help but grin as I made my way back through the vents.
"Huh... who knew." I said sarcastically.
][
I groaned in exhaustion and frustration as I paced the carpeted floor of a one exit conference room with a simple overly large table and desk chairs around its oak wood table top. A projector to the side of the room.
"I cannot believe you Felix!"
"Lily, it wasn't his fault. If anything it was mine." Liz said from where she sat, her cuffed hands nicely folded in her lap as she sat at the chair at the head of the table.
I sighed, she was right. It wasn't his fault. Neither was it hers.
"It's mine." I said in almost a defeated tone as I rested my sweaty palms against the cold table and gripped the edges. I looked up at the two of them. Their eyes watching my every move as if waiting for some sort of instruction.
"I'm sorry..."
The both looked down, casting side glanced at each other.
"What about Tyler? I saw him. He'll come get us out." Liz said quietly.
I nodded and weighed my options, biting down on my lip. If it even was him.
"Are you sure it was Tyler...?" I questioned doubting what both she and I saw. It looked like him... but something was different.
"Even if it wasn't He and Eric would still be in the SUV and after awhile they'd figure it out and come give us some back up." Felix commented, his arms crossed as he leaned against the wall just behind Liz.
I listened to their conversation as I paced the room again. I couldn't get my mind off the figure in the vents. If it was Tyler wouldn't I have known..? I always get this feeling-I can't explain-when I know he's near. Nevertheless it wasn't of much importance we needed to focus on getting out-
Before my mind could go anywhere else the projector at the side of the room flashed on a manly figure took the screen. His brown side burns and sleek pulled back hair, and grin smile catching my eye. His skin a darker tan almost as dark as his hair. I frowned as I realized just how much he looked like one of those shady business men, but nonetheless he had the essence of a wealthy powerful man.
"We weren't expecting guest." The man said almost humored as he sat in his desk chair. His elbows resting on the top of a black desk.
"Good thing we aren't guest." I chided with a smirk.
