Eavesdropping

Homework was most likely going to be the death of me. Random papers and worksheets were scattered all across the coffee table and even on the floor. My textbooks sat open on the couch and I had my pencil between my teeth staring dubiously at the vast amount of work in front of me. I leaned over and picked up my history book. I studied the chapter about Abraham Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation for about seven seconds before tossing it to the living room floor. It landed on the ground with a thud. I groaned and covered my face with the small couch pillow.

"I will never understand why homework is even legal," I mumbled before tossing the pillow to the side.

My dad gave me a look. "Why don't you cry about it some more?" he baited.

I heard Ron chuckle and I shot him a look before turning back to my dad.

"You know what, William-" I started but he cut me off.

"What, Azalea?" he chuckled. I rolled my eyes and chucked a marker at his head. It hit him in his forehead.

"Ow," he exclaimed as he grabbed the marker from the chair. He examined it before looking at me. "What was that for?"

"For being a douche face," I answered.

He scoffed and I got up. "Where are you going?" he asked.

"Somewhere," I responded and hopped into the kitchen.

I went to the supply drawer and took out the lighter my mom used for candles and such. After I closed the drawer I hid the lighter behind my back and hobbled back out to the living room. My dad and Ron gave me a questioning look but I just gave them an innocent smile and proceeded to pick up the array of worksheets in the floor.

"What do you have behind your back?" Ron asked me.

"Um, nothing important. I'll be outside if you need me," I told him as I grabbed the rest of the papers and quickly hopped over to the door.

I hid the lighter under my arm and opened the door before stepping out into the cool Washington air. I took the papers and held them out before removing the lighter from underneath my arm. This wasn't the first time I had done this to my homework and it most certainly wouldn't be the last. I held the lighter up to the papers and went to light it only to have it and the papers ripped from my hands. I looked up to see Ron standing in front of me.

"What?" I asked.

He raised an eyebrow. "Were you trying to burn your homework?"

"More or less. It isn't the first time I've done it," I snickered. He shook his head at me. "Can I have it back now, please?" I asked.

He gave me a look. "No."

"Well then. I hope you two aren't expecting me to do it because I'm not," I told him and went to hop back to the house.

I ended up losing my balance but before I could fall, Ron caught me. I held on to his arms and turned to face him. His face was inches away from mine. I could feel the warmth of his breath on the side of my face. I felt my cheeks heating up as he looked at me.

"Thank you," I said with a smile.

He smiled at me which caused my stomach to flutter. "Try to be careful," he told me and helped me stand up.

"I might just have to," I breathed out.

I turned around and carefully began limping back into the house. I walked into the living room and sat back down on the couch. My knee was hurting a bit so I propped it up onto a throw pillow. Ron came in and laid the lighter and papers down on the table. My dad heard the clank from the lighter and looked at it before looking at me.

"Again?" he asked.

"Not really, considering it didn't actually happen," I explained.

"Wow. You just keep getting worse and worse," he said.

I raised an eyebrow. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"You're becoming far too rebellious for my liking," he teased.

"I'm not rebellious."

"Beating up people, setting your homework on fire, shooting people's vehicles-" I cut him off.

"That was your fault, so don't you dare try to blame it on me! And your little Ironhide is fine, so shut up and quit whining," I chided.

He laughed and Ron shook his head at us.

"I'm seriously thinking about sending you to military school."

"Please do. Maybe they'll actually teach me how to use a freaking machine gun and then I'll just come back and blast your truck windows out. We'll see how rebellious you think I am then," I teased.

"Good luck trying to put even a dent in that truck. You'd have better luck shooting your mom's Tahoe," he laughed.

I scoffed. "I think I can manage. It may be a military truck, but it isn't completely invulnerable."

He laughed again. "Go ahead and try. I don't care, Azalea."

"I'll take a cannon to it. You wanna whine about a little gunshot, just wait."

"Alright. Whatever floats your boat. I'm not stopping you," he stated.

Him and Ron had a rather smug look on their faces which caused me to grimace. I settled back into the couch and watched TV. The Big Bang Theory was on, and I focused my attention on it. I laughed every now and then when Sheldon cracked a joke or when Howard made a comment. I sat back up after it went off.

"Exactly how was the universe formed?" I asked no one in particular. The show had just made me particularly curious.

"Have you not been paying attention in Science and Astronomy?" my dad asked. I rolled my eyes.

"Firstly, in astronomy you study stars. And secondly, no I have not."

"Then how are you an A student?" he asked.

"I'm just smart like that. Now answer the question. I'm curious."

"Ask Jesus," my dad baited.

I growled. "Whatever," I responded. My dad chuckled. "Can one of you go get my pain pills, please?" I whined.

"You're quite the needy little girl," Ron said as he got up.

"I'm not needy and I'm not a little girl."

"If you say so," he responded as he walked up the stairs.

A few moments later he came stomping back down the stairs. He tossed the bottle of pills at me but before I could respond, they hit me in the forehead. I let out a whine and held my head. I heard my dad laughing, but Ron stopped in his tracks and looked at me. He walked over to me and sat down next to me, careful not to bother my injured knee.

"Are you okay?" he asked me.

"Yes."

I gave him a reassuring smile and moved my hand away from my face. I grabbed the bottle of pills from my lap. I unscrewed the top and put one of them in my mouth. After swallowing, I looked back up to see Ron giving me a strange look.

"What?"

"You have a knot on your forehead," he stated.

I reached my hand up to the area where the bottle had hit and sure enough there was a small knot on the side of my forehead.

"Oh well. I'll be okay."

"I apologize. I shouldn't have thrown it at you," he told me.

"Don't worry about her. She's got a hard head. She'll be alright," my dad laughed.

"Shut up, William," I snapped. Ron chuckled and I looked at at him. "And it's okay."

"If you're sure," he said.

He gave me a cautious look and I just smiled and nodded. He returned my smile before getting up and going over to the recliner.

"This is getting way out of hand. I thought it was over when Sam killed Megatron in Mission City but it's just getting worse. The Decepticons need to be stopped quickly before more innocent people lose their lives," I heard my dad's voice say.

What the hell is a decenticone and who is Megatron?

I was laying on the couch. My eyes were closed and I was feeling extremely tired. I didn't really want to go back to sleep at the moment, so I decided to be nosy and continue listening on to my dad and, I assume, Ron's conversation.

"Starscream is after vengeance. We killed his leader and also destroyed the only item that was necessary to help aid in the survival of our planet. I'd say he's a little less than pleased," Ron responded.

What the hell is he even talking about?

My dad sighed.

Myself, on the other hand, was more than confused with this whole ordeal. I was completely muddled. I couldn't quite comprehend all of these weird names and cities or even the plot of it all. I hadn't any clue as to what or whom he was referring to, but I sure as hell wanted to find out. Right now, I didn't have the time or the patience to listen to their mindless chatter so, I decided to finally wake myself up.

"I know, Ironhi-"

My dad stopped mid-sentence when he noticed that I was sitting up. I stopped and gave him a strange look.

What was he just about to call Ron?

"Am I interrupting something?" I asked groggily, my brow raised.

Ron and my dad exchanged an uneasy glance. My dad gave me a hesitant smile.

"Not at all."

LIAR. I gave him a slight nod and pulled my blanket over me.

"How was your nap?" Ron asked me.

I yawned and rubbed my eyes. "It was fine. I don't remember falling asleep though."

"That's probably because you fell asleep so quickly. Those pills Ratchet gave you are working a lot faster than ever," my dad chuckled.

"Oh well. Sleep is good for the brain."

There was an uncomfortable feeling in the atmosphere. I could almost feel the tension between the two men in front of me. Just by looking at them, I could tell that they were afraid that I might've heard the "confidential" conversation they were having not even three minutes ago. I had heard almost every word, but even so that was their fault. It had sparked a certain curiosity inside me and their secretive nature brought it out even more.

I sat back into the couch cushions and made myself comfortable. I crossed my arms and smirked at the two men. They each gave me questioning looks.

"So, what were you two talking about earlier?"

My dad stiffened up and Ron just sighed.

"Did you hear us?" Ron asked.

"Precisely."

"It's nothing you need to worry about, Azalea. I promise," my dad tried to assure me.

I wasn't buying it though.

"Oh really? You're such a horrible liar. I heard you say that innocent people were being killed," I remarked. He sighed and I yawned again. "Does it have anything to do with this whole alien apocalyptic zhush?"

"Like I said, it's nothing that you need to worry about. We've got it all under control," he said.

"I may be a blonde but I'm not entirely stupid. You know how I do with secrets, dad. I find out everything eventually and sooner or later I'll find out what you two meant by Megatron, Starscream and decenticones. But for the moment I'll shut up."

"That may be what's best for you, Lea," Ron stated.

I rolled my eyes and laid back down on the couch.

"Whatever you say. I don't care right now though. I'm going back to sleep. Goodnight el confidantes. Love you," I chuckled.

"Goodnight, Lea," they responded in unison.

I snuggled into my covers and fell back to sleep.

*Please vote and comment. It'd mean so much to me. I wanna know what you guys think.*
