Doctor Ratchet

I wasn't aware of how long I had been asleep. All I knew was that I could hear crickets chirping loudly and it was giving me a splitting headache. I opened my eyes and tried to focus them on a figure in front of me. An unfamiliar man stood at the foot of my bed. He was very tall and slightly stocky. He had light colored skin and scruff on his face. I also noticed that his eyes were the same shade of bright blue that Ron's were. I groaned and sat up in bed.
"Oh, good. You're awake," the man spoke.
I rubbed my eyes and blinked. "Yeah. I guess so," I replied.
"I'm Doctor Ratchet but you can just call me Ratchet. It's nice to finally meet you, Azalea," he said.
I smiled at him. "It's nice to meet you as well. But, what are you doing here, may I ask?" I asked.
He was about to speak when Ron and my dad entered through the door.
"He came to fix you up after that little incident today," Ron said and nodded towards my knee.
There was a massive brace enclosed around my left knee. I scrunched my face up at it and turned my head back around to look at Ron, my dad and Ratchet who had went to stand by them. My neck was getting sore and tomorrow it would be much worse.
"What's wrong with it?" I asked them.
"The blow to your knee caused a partial tear in your anterior cruciate ligament and you've also managed to bruise your patella," Ratchet explained.
I groaned. Damn you, Trent.
"What am I supposed to wear with this thing on my knee? I only own like three dresses. This isn't fair," I whined and laid my head back onto my pillow. I heard a chuckle.
"Typical," I heard my dad mumble. I shot him a look.
"Well, for the time being you won't be doing much of anything. We want you to be healed up just a bit before you start trying to walk on it or even hopping on it. You're already scheduled to be out of school for the next week or so until you can function with your knee properly," Ratchet explained.
"Thank the good Lord above. I'm so sick of that place," I exclaimed.
"You'll still have work to do, Lea," my dad told me.
I grunted. "Well, that's no fun," I said.
My dad and Ron chuckled. I turned to look at Ratchet. "Wait. Please tell me that I'm not going to be stuck in here for the next week. I mean, I like my room and everything but I don't like it that much."
"Of course not. You can even shower. That brace is completely waterproof. Just try not to work your knee too hard. I'll be back tomorrow to check on you," he told me.
"Well, thanks man. Means a lot," I responded.
He simply nodded at me at me before walking out my bedroom door. I looked at Ron and my dad.
"I'm hungry," I told them.
"I'm not surprised," my dad remarked.
"What is mom cooking for dinner?"
"Hot wings," he told me.
My eyes lit up. "Can you bring me some please?" I asked him.
He sighed and walked out of my room to retrieve my food. Ron pulled the chair from my desk over to the side of my bed and sat down.
"Hello," I greeted him.
He chuckled. "Hi."
"What time is it?" I asked.
He glanced down at the clock on my bedside table. "It's approximately eight o'clock PM," he told me.
"Ah, okay," I replied.
I grabbed my remote from the foot of my bed and began surfing through the channels. I stopped when I saw Tarzan playing on Disney Channel. I smiled in content and relaxed back into my pillow. My dad rushed in seconds later with a bowl of fresh hot wings in his hand. I happily grabbed the bowl from his hands.
"Thank you, daddy," I said.
"Yeah. You're welcome, Lea," he replied as he walked back out my bedroom door. I grabbed one of the wings and began eating it.
"How can you eat those? They smell absolutely rancid," Ron exclaimed as I bit into the piece of chicken.
I gave him a look. "They're good."
"They also look very unhealthy," he said.
"Oh, so you're one of those," I stated.
He looked at me. "What?"
"You know. Like a vegan. Someone who doesn't eat meat," I said.
"Something like that," he grumbled. I giggled and finished eating my wings.
After I was done I laid the bowl down on my bedside table and licked my fingers. Ron looked at me and laughed.
"What?" I asked.
He reached over and grabbed a towel. He handed it to me and I gave him a questioning look.
"Wipe your face off. You're covered in sauce," he laughed again.
I quickly wiped my face off with the towel and threw it back at him. He gave me a disgusted look and then threw the towel to the floor. The sound of one of my favorite songs caught my attention. I looked at the TV to see the credits for Tarzan.
"Aw, I love this song," I exclaimed and began singing along with the lyrics.
Ron was giving me looks but I wasn't really paying attention to him. I was too focused on singing this song.
"Come stop your crying, it will be alright. Just take my hand, hold it tight. I will protect you from all around you. I will be here, don't you cry," I sang.
"You're a horrible singer," Ron remarked. I smirked and sang louder.
"For one so small, you seem so strong. My arms will hold you, keep you safe and warm. This bond between us can't be broken. I will be here, don't you cry."
"Primus, you're awful," he exclaimed.
I didn't know who the hell or what the hell Primus was, but I laughed.
"Why can't they understand the way we feel? They just don't trust what they can't explain. I know we're different, but deep inside us we're not that different at all," I sang.
He grunted and I snickered. I put one hand on my chest and pointed at him as I jokingly sang the next part to him.
"And you'll be in my heart, yes you'll be in my heart. From this day on, now and forever more."
"Please stop," he begged, but I just continued.
"Don't listen to them, cause what do they know? We need each other, to have, to hold. They'll see in time, I know. When destiny calls you, you must be strong. I may not be with you, but you've got to hold on," I sang, but Ron quickly got up from his seat and covered my mouth with his hand.
He was really close to me. I could feel the heat emitting from his body. My back was pressed against his chest and it was a rather safe and comfortable feeling.
Being me, I licked his hand in an attempt to get him to remove it but he didn't budge at all. He stayed in his position until the song ended. I found myself frowning as he moved away from me but quickly recovered.
"You're rude. That was my favorite song ever," I pouted.
"Who sings it?" he asked.
"Phil Collins."
"Then let him," he countered. I glared at him and he chuckled before a completely serious look took over his features. "I'm sorry that I wasn't there earlier," he said.
I gave him a confused look. "What do you mean?"
"I'm talking about when that slagger hurt you. If I had arrived earlier then you wouldn't be in this condition," he explained.
I was getting a little upset that he was blaming himself for what happened.
"Don't blame yourself. You didn't know. If anything it's my fault for what happened," I told him.
He shot me a warning look. "Don't you dare even say that. He should have known better than to put his hands on you in the first place. And I can promise that if it happens again it will be the last thing he ever does," he said.
"Well, you're oddly over protective," I chuckled.
He tensed up. "I am your guardian after all. I'm supposed to keep you safe. I'm supposed to keep you from getting hurt but look how that has turned out," he explained.
A part of me was slightly hurt that his only reason for doing what he did was because he was supposed to be my guardian, but I quickly shook it off.
"Look, if you hadn't shown up when you did, who knows what he would've done. This whole knee thing isn't so bad. I'll get over it. And I knew Trent was crazy but I didn't know he was that crazy. I just wasn't prepared for it. And I'm almost certain that he'll never lay a hand on me again or even look my way. You scared him pretty bad. It was pretty funny actually," I said.
He chuckled. "That's great to know. My boss wouldn't be too happy with me if I were to harm a human, let alone kill one," he said.
I raised my brow at him. "Your boss sounds like a hard ass," I said.
"Not particularly. There's just certain protocols we have to follow or we suffer the consequences," he explained.
"Does Ratchet work down at the base with you?"
"Yes. He's the chief medical officer at the base. Why do you ask?"
"Because normally doctors don't make home visits nowadays, so I just figured he was with you guys. You two weirdly enough have the exact same eye color. It's weird but they're still pretty. I wish my eyes were that blue. Mine are just gross and dull," I told him.
He smiled. "I think they're rather nice," he said.
I smiled. "Thank you," I said. He chuckled.
"So, did Ratchet leave like any pain pills or something because my knee is starting to really hurt and I refuse to cry in front of you or anyone else for that matter," I exclaimed.
He got up and grabbed a small bottle off my desk and handed them to me before sitting back down.
"They'll put you right to sleep," he said as I unscrewed the cap. I took out one of the pills and popped it into my mouth.
"That must be why you were so eager to get them for me. You just can't wait for me to be out of your hands for the night," I teased.
I don't even know why he was up here with me, but honestly I didn't mind. I rather enjoyed his company. I felt a sense of protection when I was around him; I felt safe.
"I also wasn't up for listening to you whine about how badly your knee was hurting you," he responded.
"Jerk," I mumbled.
He laughed and I snuggled into my blankets. It was going to be so hard to sleep with this brace tonight.
"Anyways, thank you for everything today. It means a lot to me. I appreciate you being there," I told him.
He smiled and stood up. "You're welcome. Goodnight, Azalea," he said.
"Goodnight, Ron," I replied.
He quickly brushed my cheek with his thumb before turning around and walking out of my bedroom. I smiled and leaned up to turn the lamp off before snuggling back into my covers. For the first time in I don't know how long, I actually remembered to turn my television off.
I stared at the blackness that surrounded me. All I wanted was for this pill to kick in. My knee hurt horribly and I could go for some sleep even though I had woken up about an hour ago. After staring at nothing for about half an hour I was finally starting to feel drowsy and the pain in my leg was letting up. It wasn't long before I was drifting off to sleep.
*Please vote and comment. It'd mean so much to me. I wanna know what you guys think.*
