Kano State, Nigeria.
2012.

Falak sighed, turning around on the bed like she's having a bad dream but that's not it, her period is on it's way and she doesn't know what to do. Normally in her village, she would just use a rag -a very washed one- and make it look like a sanitary pad which they call kunzugu there. What is she going to do here since there are no rags around here so it's more complicated and why didn't she thought about it and pack some?

Should she ask the maid to help her with rags or is there something the people in the city use? Talking to her mother will be better but is she up at this time? It's already twelve in the night and everyone is in his chamber and she doesn't even know where the maid's chamber is. What is she going to do now? It's going to stain very soon, the cramps start first before the real deal.

After Shaddad rescued her earlier from the parking lot, she went back to Harith who took her home. They ate dinner and everyone parted to his room, now here she is after touching her phone a little and played Candy Crush, had to drop the iPhone 5s to hold onto her stomach. Suwaid did show her how to browse from Safari so maybe she can try doing that? She knows menstruation so she typed it only and let it roll.

So many definition showed up but since she's in pain, she didn't bother looking at it means but zeroed her eyes to bad cramps. After seeing that soaking herself in the bathtub will help, she sprinted to the bathroom and turn on the tap for the bathtub then started stripping. But won't the blood stain the beautiful tub? She's afraid but with the pain, she will wash it even if it stains, right, she needs hot water.

Thirty minutes in the tube, she walked out and put on her pajamas again. Sleep abandoned her, she jumped when she saw the Ghana-must-go she brought deep inside her wardrobe. She can tear something from those old clothes and do the kunzugu than for her to keep walking around uncomfortably. Finishing that, she took her phone and walk out of the room.

Imad showed her the huge garden at by the other side of the palace so she can check it out now. She a scary cat but what can she do? She can't stay in her room when she can't go back to sleep just like she does back in her village, she'd just go out and sit down with the cows people bring to their house so that they can keep them safe. She will feed them and talk nonstop to them before going back at dawn.

The garden is very big, too big for her liking. So many acres stretch to a never ending stop, she didn't walk around the whole length but did sat on the swing. She took the phone from her pajamas' pocket and started playing Subway Surf this time around with the volume high up. She saw some guards around there which is why she is calm about the whole coming out in the night alone.

Time kept passing and before she knew it, the call for Subh prayer started roaring around the whole place. Allah Akbar, everyone will be out now to pray, what a beautiful way to wake up. She look around as the sky started blanketing dark grey canvas instead of the plain black one. One by one, she heard doors opening and closing silently and she wouldn't have heard it if she wasn't keen on hearing everything in that cold place.

Her game was still running and the sound kept flying around the air, she didn't bother standing up since she's not going to pray. She didn't know that some of the princes use this way to go to the palace's mosque till she saw him, looking as though he just finished shooting famous interview with Ellen. He looks fresh for someone who just woke up to pray, very unlike her when she woke up in the morning.

His white thobe has no wrinkles, the cuffs in place and the collar standing at attention. His eyes are shining white even in the dark, no sign of sleepiness or sleepy person attached to him. This is the first time she's seeing him in something other than suit and waistcoat and she wants to keep it stacked in her head. He looks like an Angel, human angels should look like him because of the way he manage to bring that white thobe.

"Sabahul khair, Good morning!" She's just testing him to know if he knows how to speak Arabic or not, not that she's an expert herself. Maybe he won't even reply, she's a hundred and one percent sure he won't but he did.

"Sabahul khair, Good morning." His voice sounded lazy with the drawl across the Arabic words, making her shrink back a little. He got the huruf so much that she though he was biting onto his tongue and clashing his teeth but he looks lazy as he walked past, sparing her one glance.

Shaddad didn't know why he replied, his mouth just moved because of how she said it. He wanted to just ignore her existence and move to the mosque so he could lead, yes, he leads the mosque in the palace and is never late. People can't wrap their heads that Yarima himself is doing that. What there? He's just a servant of Allah! They thought because he doesn't talk means he doesn't know anything about his religion, he extended his religion to a very long ride and can beat a lot of Sheikhs around Kano and even Nigeria.

He finished his morning prayers, azkaars, nawafils and other prayers he normally does whenever he finished leading the prayer and when he's done, it's always around seven am so he would go and get ready and then go have breakfast with everyone else. He did that and went to the dinning table and as usual, he was early, only the King was at the table.

They had a short conversation like always knowing how everything is going and nothing personal. The princes started filing in one after the other and taking their seats.

"You should've asked me about it, you naughty lady." The Queen, Hajia Karima scolded her daughter when she told her about what she did as sanitary pad.

Not that she was disgusted, but she is afraid her daughter will get infection because she also dealt with that when she was in the village before she gets to the city after separating from Falak's father. She is now used to sanitary pad and has totally forgotten about anything called kunzugu. It's totally not good for the health and she made a mental note to take some pads to the village for women, even if it is to sell them. She will give someone to sell them for her.

"I thought that's what you people do here." She wring her fingers against one another looking like she's about to bolt out if there.

"No, we use a sanitary pad and there are some in your bathroom. Let me show you how to use it." And with that, she started adjusting it around her underwear and that makes her blush.

"Okay, I get it." She snatched the underwear from her and his it behind her which makes her mother release a full blown laughter like hers.

"Get ready and come down to the table." She grinned at her daughter before leaving the room.

Finally, she's happy!

Falak wrestled into the underwear and got dressed. She left the room to the silent dining where everyone is waiting for her and Asad. As soon as she sat down in between Harith and Masrooq, Asad also hollered his presence and everyone started eating. Again Falak stood up first and kissed Harith, Suwaid, Humaid, Huzaif, Asad and Imad before running off to the car. She thank God they are sitting close to each other and she won't have to round the table.

"Yes, trauma. There are blood dots, discoloration around the skin. The patient is in an excruciating pain and has difficulty breathing." His nurse explained the work that wasn't in his field but since he's general, he knew the other doctors are busy.

"I'll be there in two minutes. Stay by his side and bring out the things needed." He ended the call and continue to drive to the hospital with the village lass's thought mingling his brain. She's still kissing them, idiot.

"Now you will have to tell me what's wrong or I won't leave you." Falak said to Jabrayah as they sat down in their chairs in Chemistry Laboratory waiting for their teacher.

"I'm getting married." She broke the eyes making Falak throw her head back and laugh.

What's there if she's getting married? She's too old to be at home without a husband just like her, she'd get mocked at back in her village so there is nothing to worry about because she's getting married. She finds this hilarious for some reason.

"You should be happy." Falak frowned when she saw Jabrayah's unamused ones.

"Arranged marriage at this young age in this century? No thank you." She rolled her eyes and face the board, not liking Falak's reaction at all.

"Back in my village, you must get married before fifteen." Falak explained to Jabrayah who turned and gave her a look of disbelieve.

"You're serious?" She asked, her mouth hanging open and her jaw touching the table.

"I got mocked at because no one was willing to marry me, I'm happy to be here though." She shrugged.

"Well, I'm getting married to I don't know who and it's taking place in three months, just a little after our final exams. Waec I mean." She sighed and thought back to what happened with her father and sister few days ago. It's all her sister's fault. . .
