Chapter 28 - Seeds Of Doubts

It had just hit midnight when Jessie started to finish his date plans. He had briefly sent Riley away so that he could set everything up, and he added several things into the picnic basket that he was sure Riley would love.

Sandwiches, crisps, sweets and treats, and flavoured water. Jessie noted everything he saw as he closed the basket, taking a blanket with him and keeping it by the door.

Riley eagerly came through the door as he happened to see Jessie place something down. He had waited patiently enough to come back inside, and he was curious to see what Jessie was up to.

"What's that?" Riley asked as he pointed towards the covered lump on the floor.

Jessie smiled as he held a finger up to Riley. "Wait right there."

Riley laughed at the excited ball of energy in front of him. He was glad to see Jessie so happy about something he mysteriously planned. It then turned to confusion when he saw Jessie leave through the door in an instant.

Right as the door closed, Riley heard a knock on the other side of the door. "Jessie? What the fuck are you doing?"

"Play along!" Jessie whispered as he tried to not wake anybody else up.

Riley heard Jessie knock again as he finally opened the door to Jessie. Jessie was suddenly holding a single tulip in his hand, and Riley saw that Jessie was bouncing on his feet with excitement.

"What's all this?" Riley innocently asked.

Jessie stretched his hand out so that he could pass Riley the beautiful red flower. "I'm taking you out on a date of course. This is just something I really wanted to do - to pick you up for our date."

Riley shook his head in disbelief as he watched Jessie remain proud at his romantic gesture. He didn't expect to see this kind of romance from Jessie, and Riley was loving the effort that Jessie was putting into this whole night.

"Is this too corny?" Jessie hesitantly asked when he saw Riley's reaction-less face.

"A little bit," Riley then smelled the flower that Jessie gave him, as he grinned back up at Jessie with a warm smile on his face. "But I love it."

"Really?" Jessie beamed excitedly.

Riley nodded his head as he pulled Jessie inside their room. Closing the door behind him, Riley smiled back at Jessie as he leaned forward to softly kiss him.

Jessie was relieved at seeing how much Riley enjoyed his little stint, and he felt the enthusiasm when Riley wrapped his arms around him.

Pulling back from each other, Jessie looked into Riley's eyes and saw the blue eyes sparkle. He felt giddy inside as he basked in the way Riley was looking at him.

"Follow me to our date." Jessie instructed as he grabbed the picnic basket and blanket.

~~~~~~~~~~
The distance travelled was extremely short, as they were now stood outside the school gates. They were facing the empty football pitch on the other side, and Riley turned back to Jessie with a quizzical look on his face.
"Are we really breaking in here for our date?" Riley asked as he watched Jessie calculate their bearings in order to climb the fence.
"Don't wuss out on me, let's go." Jessie told Riley as he started scaling the fence.
Easily making it onto the other side, Jessie told Riley to pass over the things they were carrying. A reluctant Riley soon copied Jessie, as he then joined him on the other side by climbing the gates.
The field was dark outside, but they still had a clear sight of each other. Jessie braved the first step by reaching for Riley's hand in an attempt to hold it. When he felt a warm squeeze back, Jessie took them to the middle of the pitch so that they could set down their picnic.
"So, can I ask you about your reasons behind tonight then?" Riley had neatened the blanket as he then sat down on the covered grass.
Jessie joined Riley as he carefully placed the basket down, and started unloading the food. "As you know, I'm not exactly ready to be fully seen in public like this - with you."
Riley reassuringly squeezed Jessie's hands again, as he remembered how Jessie was saying he was still finding his place in society. Even if the dating was a secret, Riley was just glad they could make it this far.
"I don't want to exactly hide you, but I'm not brave enough to come forward either." Jessie then added, "A midnight date, with no one around, was the best I could think of. Nobody could see or judge us, and so I can behave even more normal around you."
Riley felt a lot of comfort from Jessie's words, as Jessie continued to tell him that things were becoming more serious between them.
Riley then teased Jessie by mentioning, "I didn't know you could be so sweet and romantic. How come I've never seen this side of you before?"
"All those other girls I dated weren't as special as you." Jessie shyly admitted with his blushing face, "So I didn't need to try with them, because they weren't like you."
Riley played with Jessie's fingers that were in his lap, and he was obsessed with having the feeling of Jessie under his skin, his mind, and his heart.
Kissing his hand, Riley whispered to Jessie. "I feel the same about you, and I'm glad we finally get to do something like this."
They both looked at each other softly, and saw the genuine emotions from each other. They didn't need to say anything else, as they then started eating together in their own little world.
~~~~~~~~~~

Jessie and Riley were now stargazing as they looked up at the midnight sky. Lying down side by side, they enjoyed the ambiance as their hands were being held together.

With the football match against their rival team soon, Riley asked Jessie. "Couple of days until the big game, you ready captain?"

"If my striker was a little quicker, and hadn't just stuffed his face with all of the chocolate, then I would be a lot more comfortable with us winning." Jessie joked as he jabbed Riley's stomach.

Riley leaned onto his elbow so he could directly speak to Jessie. "I'll definitely win us the game against those jerks."

"Oh yeah?" Jessie challenged, as he then leaned against his own elbow to face Riley. "Want to bet?"

"There's nothing you can bet, I already have everything I want right here."

When Jessie felt Riley kiss him lightly, Jessie couldn't help but push Riley back down onto his back. Laughing at Riley hysterically, "What the fuck Riley? I thought this date was cheesy enough without you talking out of your ass."

Riley shook his head laughing as he rolled onto Jessie so that Jessie was pushed onto his back. Now on top of him, Riley pressed a kiss onto Jessie's neck. "It's how I really feel."

Jessie gave up on teasing Riley as he moved Riley's head to kiss his lips. Jessie took advantage of Riley's lips parting, and glided his tongue against his. Jessie then used his hands to keep Riley close to him, as Riley lifted his hand to caress Jessie's cheek.

"We're not having sex on this field..."

Riley furrowed his brows when he felt Jessie had ruined the mood. He then gave Jessie one last chaste kiss before telling him, "Spoil sport."

~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day, Jessie was at practice with his team as they were running laps around the field. Things started to become uncomfortable when the cheerleaders decided to join in too, and Jessie saw Olivia was amongst them.
Apparently they wanted to join in since they needed to do intense cardio. Jessie had no reasons why they couldn't run around the field with them, and so Jessie tried his best to at least keep some distance between him and Olivia.
A little while later though, Jessie was jogging with Cameron when he was shoved by a sprinting Olivia. Once she dashed past them, she deliberately slowed down so that Jessie could only see her back.
"There goes our friend." Cameron pointed out, as she had also stopped talking to the guys as well. "I think she's icing everyone from our group."
If the shoulder nudge didn't show it enough, the silent treatment added to the fact that Jessie knew his friendship with Olivia was over. In hindsight Jessie would have taken the whole approach differently, but it was too late now.
"I don't blame her for hating me," Jessie admitted. "But it's getting really weird."
Jessie was pretty sure that anybody who broke up with the great and popular Olivia Tanner, were destined to be hated by her creepy fan base and her circle of influential socialites.
Jessie already felt the ripple effects of the nasty breakup.  Some of the players in his own team shunned him a couple of hours ago. The study group that Jessie created suddenly kicked him out. And now people were pushing him out of the line when he was queuing for food in the canteen.
It was scary how Olivia unknowingly had so much power. Jessie wasn't exactly scared of Olivia's influence, but the new experiences were becoming a massive annoyance.
Riley soon came jogging past Jessie and Cameron, as he then latched onto Jessie's back by playfully hugging him. Jessie was grossed out as he felt the sweat pass off from Riley to himself. "Fuck off Riley!"
Riley continued to tease Jessie by rubbing his hair against his sensitive neck. Laughing it off, "All I do is hug you, and you get pissed off? Now I have to do it more often."
Cameron felt embarrassed by the pair's antics as he decided to try and catch up with Luke. Cameron thought that they would at least try to be at little more discreet, since it was what Jessie wanted. But their closeness could also be seen as them being really good friends, so Cameron just let the whole thing slide.
Jessie laughed even harder with Riley as he then climbed onto Riley's back. "Carry your captain to the finish line."
"Yes sir!" Grabbing his legs tightly, Riley took several deep breaths before sprinting past everyone else on the track.
Jessie clung onto Riley as he ignored all the confused and weirded looks from Olivia's coven. This was the reason why he suddenly became the school's pariah, because Olivia didn't know that Riley was the other 'woman'.
But Jessie didn't care, he ignored them all because he was just having fun with Riley. Nobody else could spoil his mood since Riley always made everything better.
Looking at his friend who was carrying him around the field, Jessie felt that he was willing give up his social status if it meant that he could at least be in Riley's life, because it was so worth it.
Once they made it to the finish line, Riley was heavily panting as he accidentally dropped Jessie like a sack of potatoes.
"Ah shit!" Jessie cursed as he held his ankle.
Riley stopped goofing around as he looked at Jessie clutching his injured ankle. "Did I hurt you? I'm really sorry Jessie."
"Just take me to put ice onto it." Jessie ordered, as he then felt Riley immediately lift him up. "And I would prefer it if you didn't carry me bridal style."
Riley rolled his eyes as he then threw Jessie over his shoulder. Moving even faster, Riley took Jessie inside to stop his injury from becoming even worse.
When Riley carefully put Jessie's down onto the bench, he ran near the back and grabbed some ice for him. "Where does it hurt?"
Jessie pointed towards his left ankle, and Riley took Jessie's shoe off so that he could hold the ice over it.
"And here," Jessie told Riley as he gestured towards his hip. Riley listened to Jessie as he then moved it onto Jessie's hip, letting the cold ice heal him.
Jessie then pointed towards his shoulder and told Riley that it was hurting there too. Riley swore that Jessie no way near landed on his shoulder, and he was confused on what fuss Jessie was making.
"I think I bit my tongue when you dropped me too."
Riley's brain suddenly clicked as he figured out Jessie's intentions. He stopped looking towards the ice pack, and moved to look at Jessie. Jessie had a small smirk on his face, and that's when Riley realised he was being played like a pawn.
"You were just too lazy to continue running, weren't you?" Riley deduced, as he figured out the reason why Jessie wanted to be carried everywhere. "I bet you aren't even hurt either."
"Guilty." Jessie coyly admitted as he began to laugh once he realised he was caught out. "I just wanted to get you alone too."
"Why?"
Because he knew they were alone inside the locker room, Jessie felt confident as he pulled Riley into a kiss quick. He then escalated things by wrapping his arms around Riley's neck, and drawing him in even closer.
Riley was torn between sarcastically laughing at Jessie's unfunny prank, feeling conflicted because he was genuinely worried that he hurt Jessie, and horny because of the way Jessie was moving against him.
The latter easily won as Riley decided to lean his weight into Jessie, and push him down. The giggles of laughter covered up Jessie's apology, as Riley then continued to enjoy their private little moment.
Jessie had to stop Riley peeling off his clothes, as he reminded Riley that people could come in any second. "I just needed a moment alone after I saw you all sweaty and manly like that."
"And how does you saying that not make you super gay?" Riley laughed.
Riley then regretfully pulled himself away so that he could sit down next to Jessie. Just a heads up, there doesn't need to be any games like that. I'm always up for anything with you, 100% of the time."
"Noted." Jessie said, "And sorry for playing you like that."
"I'm going for a cold shower now," Riley told Jessie as he already took his shirt off. "I suggest you don't join me, because it's just going to get all hot and steamy in there, and people will definitely catch us fucking like rabbits."
Jessie watched Riley's bare ass disappear behind the stalls, and Jessie was forced to leave the room because he was too tempted to join Riley in there.
However when Jessie left the locker room, a feeling of dread descended onto him, as a smug faced Olivia stood with her arms crossed against her chest.
~~~~~~~~~~~

Jessie pulled Olivia into an empty classroom near them. He had closed the door and shut the blinds immediately, as Olivia then began to hysterically laugh.

"I turned you gay?!" Olivia screamed.

Jessie rushed over to cover Olivia's mouth from speaking any louder. "You're seeing and hearing things wrong."

Olivia's eyes became bored as she rolled them when she listened to Jessie. "I literally saw and heard you both. Is Riley the skank that broke us up?!"

"Don't call Riley that..." Jessie lowly whispered as he defended Riley, "But now that you know, yes, it's Riley."

Olivia was shaking her head at the revelation. Out of all the people she imagined, she had never thought that the other person was Riley. "Since when were you gay?"

"I'm not gay!" Jessie ignored Olivia's exaggerated eye roll and groan, as he then admitted. "I'm just, kind of gay for Riley."

"This is unbelievable... You certainly didn't waste your time in going through the knickers of every girl, and now you're going through every guy's boxers too!"

"It's not like that!" Jessie defended himself. He tried to explain to Olivia how things were different with Riley, "It's-"

"Fire and passion." Olivia repeated Jessie's words back to him, as she mocked Jessie's earlier explanation for their breakup. "You seriously can't think that's its serious between you two."

Jessie felt that things were quickly becoming serious between him and Riley. And therefore he didn't agree wit Olivia as he told her, "Maybe it could be."

"You're just Riley's bit of fun!" Olivia menacingly laughed, "He's probably slept with more people than us two combined, and now he wants to add the captain of the football team onto his list."

Jessie was in sheer disbelief about what Olivia was saying, and he didn't want to accept any of venom she was spewing. "It's not lik-"

"It's not like that," Olivia mockingly mimicked. "Riley is one of the biggest whores in our school. You really think that Riley isn't cheating on you right now?"

Jessie was shaking his head at what Olivia was suggesting. Riley was so passionate about making things between them work, and Jessie couldn't imagine that it was all a game to him.

"It won't take long until Riley's bored, and finds another dirty obsession." Olivia harshly criticised, as she was skeptical about Riley's intentions, and the longevity of the thing they had going on.

'I'm not Riley's dirty little play toy...'

Jessie didn't like what he was hearing. He didn't want to believe any of her horrible words, but she was still so persistent in ruining Riley's character.

They both knew that Riley had a past - even Jessie had one. They both had a long history of scorned lovers, and Jessie hated to admit that he had thoughts about Riley easily drifting away from him.

Given that they both had a long list of sexual partners, Jessie was scared that he was being played right under Riley's spell.

'Why would he want me?'

Olivia stepped closer and placed her hand onto Jessie's shoulder. "I was angry at you at first - for breaking up with me. But now I just pity you Jessie."

Olivia then turned onto her heel and spoke into the air nonchalantly. "Riley has people whipped under his spell all the time, and now it's no different with the football captain begging for his attention."

"Shut the fuck up!" Jessie yelled. His face grew red as he then placed both of his hands onto his head - clearly frustrated and agitated.

"Touched a nerve?" Olivia laughed, "I can't wait to see this disaster explode like Vesuvius."

Silence filled the room as Olivia let her words rattle Jessie's vulnerable mind. She smirked when she saw the effect it had on Jessie, and she m finally had enough of her own fun.

Olivia was leaving towards the door when Jessie abruptly stopped her from leaving. "You're not- What are you going to tell people?"

Olivia cocked her head side to side as if she was thinking deeply. But then she wickedly grinned at an upset Jessie, "While it's true I pity you, I'm still pretty pissed off at you!

Olivia then prodded Jessie's chest with her sharp finger. "I told you that you messed with the wrong woman..."

"You can't tell anyone about us, please!" Jessie begged. He didn't want anyone knowing about their dirty little secret, and Jessie was terrified about it coming all out. "I'll do whatever you want."

Olivia had an evil look on her face as she then pinched Jessie's cheek. After she slapped the same cheek, Olivia told Jessie her true motive behind everything. "I just want you to suffer the way I have."

Jessie was soon left in the room alone, as he felt his world was blowing up again. In the exact same classroom he had a falling out with his mother, Jessie felt like he was experiencing dévà vu - but about Riley and his own questionable sexuality.

Jessie was anxious at how everybody would now judge him differently. Jessie was scared that his hard working merits were going to be shadowed by people labelling him as dirty, and an abomination to society for liking another man.

Jessie was also horrified when he realised that Riley may have been playing him all these months. He felt like an idiot for falling for Riley, and Jessie hated how he let himself be constantly vulnerable and open in front of Riley.
