During dinner Scott was again called to the visitation room.
"Scott's Mr. Popular," Avi joked.
"Probably just a lawyer or some dumbass from social services." Scott retorted.
After he was chained in the room Scott's new guardians entered, Scott smiled widely.
"Hey y'all."
"Hey Scott," Ms. Cook began, "we got everything signed off at DSS."
"You're officially our responsibility Scott," Mr. Ward continued.
"And now that that's taken care of I want to get started on your case." Ms. Thompson laid her briefcase on the table. "Okay since I'm now able to legally get your things, would you mind me going through your phone. I want to have a tech examine the message you say is from Alex. That will help prove he threatened you."
"Yea, that's no problem. But I wouldn't look through the photos."
Ms. Thompson looked confused.
"SB, he's a 17 year old boy with a boyfriend, connect the dots, hon." Mr. Ward laughed as Scott looked down, cheeks red with embarrassment.
"Ohhh!" Sara-Beth had a sudden realization.
"Ummm... yea...could you also take my necklace. I gave it to them too, it's one Mitchie gave me for our anniversary."
"Sure we'll take it home for you," Ms. Marez smiled.
"Home?" Scott asked.
"Yes silly, when you're out you'll still be our responsibility. You'll come home with us, it's your home now too."
Scott stared at them for a moment before choking out his thanks. "Thank you, Ms. Marez, Mr. Ward, Ms. Cook, Ms. Thompson. Thank you all so much."
"Oh, no need to thank you but we need to establish somethings now."
"Okay."
"First, no more of the mister and miss thing unless we're at school. Amber, Kyle, Summer, and Sara-Beth. Got it?"
"Are you sure?" Scott questioned.
"We're sure," Kyle continued. "Second thing, school, your grades weren't horrendous but we're would like to see some improvement. How are classes going here?"
"So far they're okay. It's hard not have an actual teacher to help though."
"Well, you'll have three when you get home so no excuses."
"Yes sir, I'll try harder."
"Third," it was now Summer's turn. "Sex." Scott's eye became huge and his cheeks flashed red. "We don't know when you'll be coming home but we need to get these conversations out of the way. You're 17, we get that, we've been there. Use protection, don't do it while we're in the room beside you."
Scott nodded as she continued.
"Curfew, number four, 10 on school nights, 12 on weekends, understood?"
"Yes!"
Sara-Beth spoke next, "and number five..." she smiled, "what color do you want your bedroom?"
"Y'all don't have to give me a bedroom. I can sleep on the couch or something."
"You will do no such thing, you will sleep in a bed, in your own room, that you decorate. But we want to paint it before you get home."
"But y'all have done so much already. So much more than any other foster family has done. So much more than my actual parents have done."
"No buts Scott. What color?"
"Uhhh, blue or black....or grey."
"We can work with that," Kyle started, "okay, now that all that uncomfortable stuff is out of the way, we have a surprise..."
The adults looked around smiling at each other.
Amber spoke first, "we signed your visitation list."
"Does that mean... can Mitch visit me now?"
"Yes, we'll let his parents know and maybe he can come up later in the week." Summer had a cheesy grin on her face as she tried not to let it slip that Mitch was in the lobby waiting to come in.
"Oh god, I hope so! I miss him so much!" Scott paused before continuing more quietly than before. "What's he going to think?"
"Think about what Scott?" Kyle asked.
Scott lifted his hands to indicate the cuffs and chains on his body. "What if he's scared of me... what if he never what's to see me again?"
"You know that won't happen Scott. That boy has been through hell this week without you... he won't judge you... he'll just be happy to see you," Amber said.
"I hope you're right."
"Rule number six, Amber is always right," she beamed.
"Y'all we better head out soon," Sara-Beth stated looking at her watch. "And we still have to get his personal items before we go."
The others sighed and nodded as they stood to leave. There was a round of hugs for Scott as they started to exit.
"Hey," Scott spoke up as they opened the door, "thank you guys you've finally given me a real family...and...and I...I love y'all."
Tears welled in everyone's eyes as the adults returned the sentiment before leaving.
