#1. Birthday Bliss

Changes are constant in life, they say. Be it life, career, your likes, passion, love, or even relationships, everything changes as you grow up. However, it’s also said that with effort, you can keep everything in your life intact. Every relationship needs effort from both sides, and so it is with sibling relationships, whether real siblings or cousins; it stays the same. Such is the belief of the Randhawa siblings — Aniket, Ruhaan, and Anamika. These three are the only family to each other. Anamika, being the darling sister of her two brothers, has been brought up by them, as they are her immediate guardians. Their bond is smooth, and they do not need words to express their feelings. They understand each other so well that they can sense inner turmoil better than words could convey. Life is good for the three siblings.

It’s a fine day in the Randhawa House, and a young girl is running around, trying to decorate the house. She’s fixing fairy lights in the hall when her elder brother calls for her. He’s amazed at the decorations.

“Ana, ye kya chal raha hai? Na toh tu mujhe kuch bata rahi hai aur na hi mujhe help karne de rahi hai,” he complains.

“Bhai, aap bhul gaye? Aaj Ruhaan Bhaiya ka birthday hai, vo aane wale hain aaj, toh hum unhe surprise denge naa,” Ana, aka Anamika, turns to her elder brother.

“Mujhe yaad hai, aur usko aane mein abhi time hai, lekin tu toh bata kya plan hai?” Aniket, her elder brother, puts forward a question.

“Arey, simple hai. Ruhaan bhaiya ek mahine baad wapas aayenge, toh hum unka birthday celebrate karenge. Bas hum teenon – aap, main aur Ruhaan bhaiya,” Anamika chuckles, her tone laced with enthusiasm.

“Aap cake leke aao, red velvet wala. Baaki sab main dekh lungi,” Anamika says, visibly happy.

“Okay, fine! Jaata hoon, lekin tujhe jo bhi karna hai aaram se karna. Tujhe chot aai, toh vo Ruhaan mere pe chillayega,” Aniket says, his eyes softening as he gazes at his sister.

“Vaise, aap bade ho ya Ruhaan bhaiya? I mean, dant-te toh vo hai aapko, aap unko kuch nahi kehte ho,” Anamika says, her tone teasing.

“Toh humse pyaar bhi toh sabse zyada wahi karta hai, tujhse bhi! Tu toh jaanti hi hai vo tere liye thoda zyada protective hai, bahut pyar karta hai na wo tujhse,” Aniket smiles, remembering his brother with a fond smile.

Aniket watches Anamika arranging the lights and balloons. She’s quite excited at the moment; it’s their brother Ruhaan’s birthday. He’s been away on a business trip to Bangalore and Delhi, and now, he’s returning after a month. It certainly calls for a celebration. Aniket comes out of his trance when Anamika calls him, and he leaves the house to bring the cake, as per Ruhaan’s favorite. He’s aware that Anamika is going to prepare their brother’s favorite dishes. It’s going to be fun upon Ruhaan’s arrival.

A few hours later, a young guy stands outside the bungalow, ringing the doorbell. As the door opens, he’s greeted by the sight of the smiling face of his sister. He’s Ruhaan, and Anamika leaps into his arms, hugging him.

“I missed you, bhaiya! Kitni der laga di aapne?” Anamika asks, her tone soft yet complaining.

“Aww, I missed you too, Chhoti! Lekin kaam bhi toh zaruri tha. Ab tu mujhe yahin khada rakhegi ya andar bhi aane degi,” he jokes, trying to calm his sister.

Anamika parts the hug and holds his hand, leading him inside. Ruhaan is surprised to see that the hall is beautifully decorated with balloons and lights. Also, there’s a cake, his favorite flavor, red velvet. He’s mesmerized and turns emotional when both Anamika and Aniket wish him for his birthday. He’s teary-eyed, seeing the affection of his siblings.

“Toh kaisa laga hamara surprise? Achhca laga?” Anamika asks excitedly.

“Bahut sundar, Ana! Main toh bhul hi gaya tha, I am overwhelmed,” Ruhaan says, his smile widening ear-to-ear.

“Hum aapka birthday kaise bhul sakte hain? It’s a special day. Aur aap hi kehte ho na ki family never changes aur na hi hum siblings mein kuch change aana chahiye. Aur phir aap bhi toh mere birthday pe itna kuch plan karte ho, lekin main itna hi kar paayi, aapko pata hai na, bade bhaiya kuch help nahi karte,” Anamika says, sending a teasing glance toward Aniket.

“Hey, tune kahan mujhe kuch karne diya? Mujhe toh order mila tha cake laane ka, wo main le aaya,” Aniket retorts, causing Ruhaan to giggle.

He pulls both his siblings into a warm embrace, the one he’s been craving for a long time. Happy tears well up in his eyes, seeing the love and affection of his siblings. This is the best welcome he could ever anticipate.

A little while later, Ruhaan freshens up and changes into casuals. He walks out of his room only to find his siblings waiting for him. He joins them and cuts the cake while the other two sing the happy birthday song for him. Feeding both Aniket and Anamika one piece each, Ruhaan looks at them gratefully. He’s glad to be with them on his special day. He looks at them, searching for words to thank them.

Before he could speak, Anamika’s voice falls on his ears. He looks at his baby sister, and she’s standing before him, extending her hand, “Laao, mera gift?” She asks, her tone laced with unfiltered excitement.

“Arey, Ruhaan ka birthday hai, toh tujhe usey gift dena chahiye,” Aniket retorts, standing by his brother’s side.

“Maine diya na gift, maine aaj aap dono ki favorite dishes banai hai. Par aap dono hi toh mujhe gifts dete rehte ho. Toh aaj bhi Ruhaan bhaiya ko dena chahiye na,” Anamika reasons, her tone quirky.

“Par ye toh galat hai,” Aniket plays along.

“Arey, ab aap dono ne hi aadat lagai hai, toh ab toh mujhe Ruhaan bhaiya se gift chahiye hi. Aapne bhi toh mujhe tablet diya tha gift mein,” Anamika says, gazing at her beloved brothers.

“Arey haan, main laaya hoon gifts, aur sirf tere liye nahi, Anu. Iss baar bhai ke liye bhi gift hai mere paas. Lekin pehle hum khana khayein? Bahut bhook lagi hai,” Ruhaan responds, smearing his hand on his tummy, causing Aniket and Anamika to giggle.

Anamika nods, she holds their hands, and takes them toward the dining table. She serves the food with her hands, and then joins them, letting her brothers pamper her, taking turns to feed her. Well, this is the most cherished moment for all three of them. The dinner table is filled with chitchat, laughter, and love.

As Ruhaan takes a moment to gaze at his siblings, he is well-aware that having them by his side is his superpower. Also, he’s well-aware that they are connected with unbreakable threads of love and strength, and that no one can ever break it, and he’s glad about it.
