Chapter 1
What the~? Wha~? My thoughts echoed through my head. What's going on? What's happening? The last thing I remembered...was nothing! The only thing that I remember was my past thoughts three heartbeats ago. Around my body, I can feel nothing but a warm...coolness. It doesn't make any sense!
But, with all this confusion, I felt something. I felt warm...safe...comfort. Since when? Thirty seconds ago, apparently.
I tried to move my limbs. That got me nowhere. I struggled to spread out from my curled up position. Eventually, I gave up. Then I thought, Amber. You have been in this weird dream for at least five minutes, and just gave up trying to move. You haven't even thought about looking around. Stupid!
I sighed, and strained to get my eyes open. I expected to see a dark, cozy cave with a fire, or some sort of building floating. Instead, I just saw whiteness. I looked everywhere my pupils would let me, expecting to see something. But nope! Nothing.
It was actually pretty neat.
I breathed in the air of this mysterious area of whiteness. It kind of smelled like sweet roasted cashews. It was odd, and a bit random, but I like it. I don't really see the point of it, since there was nothing in sight. Well, except for whiteness.
I closed my eyes again and relaxed. I've never felt this comfort before. Every time I felt something even close to it, I always ended up in tears from memories. But now, I cant remember anything.
But the comfort didn't last long.
I gasped, and my eyes flew open as ominous coldness flooded my veins. Black darkness shot up with ragged jerky streaks. A harsh chilly wind whipped past my flailing body. It scraped against my skin, I was surprised it didn't tear me apart. Darkness soon engulfed me. I was not falling down anymore; I was getting thrown around, kicked, and stabbed. My brain was freaking out from the absence of blood.
I wanted to scream, but my throat was stuck with strain. I fell onto some sort of smooth cold stone. I saw light, and fire leaped around me. My eyes reflected the blazing flare. The ground started to fade, as if it were dough. I frantically stepped up, trying to stand my ground, but to no avail.
I started falling into the raging fire. It was all messed up; the fire, instead of giving heat, made me feel more colder than I've ever felt before. As I fell, gusts of icy winds hit my body from below, but gave me nothing to slow myself down. Out of nowhere, a gust of intense heat pushed my body through the wall of fire. My skin was burning, and there was nothing that I could do.
I closed my eyes, and opened them to find myself circling around the raging fire, but I still felt the heat and light of fire behind me. I frantically looked around. What the-? Is that...people? I heard my thoughts echo through my head. One...three...five...wait...is that Lizza-? Before I could finish my thought, I felt myself fall downwards, spiraling out of control. I should've known something else was going to happen... I fell for a little while more, but this was just boring now. But, as I hit the ground, my heart stopped.
* * *
I woke up with a start, instinctively sitting up. What in the name of-? I thought. By body was still trembling from the strangely weird dream. I looked around my room. The air was warm, for once in a lifetime.
I laid back down, thinking about what just happened. I saw nothing, then darkness, then fire, and then nothing? Strange... But I had no time to think. I could hear my mom yelling at me from downstairs, saying something about "It's almost seven 'o clock!" Oh dear, school...
I got up to change into the outfit I had on my bed from the night before that ended up on the floor for the third time this week. Thank the heavens it's Friday! Lets see...tie dye shirt...purple Aries sweatshirt...green-trimmed black capris...rainbow sunglasses...short black socks...seems legit!
It takes about two minutes for me to change, which my brothers and parents don't really understand. I don't know why, it's just clothes. I quickly walked downstairs, almost falling on the way. Crap. I forgot my backpack upstairs... Oh well, I'll just grab it real quick.
"'Morning mom! Hey Zippy! Oh, there you are Walbo-" I started to say what I normally say, and my mom normally interrupted me.
"Amber Destiny Marinia, what took you so long?!" She snapped, annoyed for the fifth time this week.
I shrugged, "I forgot to set up my alarm...again."
My mom rolled her eyes, "I gave birth to a distinguished honor roll student, who is one of the best marchers in the band, and you can't even wake up by yourself?!" She said, but more good-humored than mad this time. I smiled, You know it only takes three minutes to eat chicken nuggets in the morning, with hot chocolate!
I walked onto the bus, and sat in my everyday seat by myself, seat number seventeen, my favorite number! I half tossed, half dragged my boxy white backpack covered in sharpie of colored cats to the side of the bus and leaned back on it. I took out my small music square thingy from my pocket, and plugged in my thick neon green headphones, sliding them on. I started playing my jam, and slid on my sunglasses, chilling on the noisy bus.
After a while, I felt a nudge against my foot. I opened my eyes to see high schoolers walking past me, slowly getting off the bus as always. I must've fallen asleep. I thought and sat up, sleepily sliding my backpack on. Crap...this weighs a ton! I complained in my head. Good thing people cant read minds!
Walking into school, I realized that I forgot my flute at home and freaked out for a few moments just to remember that band was cancelled today. The first football game was moved to the second week of school. Thank the heavens for that!
Quickly, I walked through the crown of people over towards my best friend—my only friend, but she's the best—sitting by the large staircase. "Hey Lizza! What's up?" I started happily.
She looked up from her sketchbook, and got up, smiling, "Hey Amber! I just finished my comic thingy for science class! I still cant believe we got a project on the second day of school! But it's fun, I guess." She said.
"Oh cool! Oh wait, when's that due?" I asked. Oh crap, I completely forgot to do my own project for science! My assignment was to make a scenario in the woods where a wolf attacks a deer in a box thingy, and I haven't even started!
Lizza chuckled, "You dope you forgot, didn't you!" I took in a breath to make an epic comeback, but realized that I was being stupid. "It's due next Wednesday, so don't be a retard and forget!" She said teasingly.
I rolled my eyes, "Yeah yeah, I'll do it!" Suddenly I felt something. "Hey, have you seen Jayden anywhere?" I asked and looked around.
Lizza cracked up laughing. She was laughing so hard I thought she would've died. Soon, she got herself under enough control so that she could talk, "Man, are you so obsessed with that guy you can tell when he isn't here?!" She said and started laughing again.
I rolled my eyes and looked around. I noticed something. "Hey nincompoop, look around you." I said.
Lizza took a deep breath, and looked around the school. The people in the building were mainly girls, and all the boys present seemed sick. The group of dudes that normally has about fifteen students in our grade has only three. "Well then...this is...strange..." Lizza mumbled.
I nodded, "And that's not the only weird thing." I said. "I also had a weird dream last night..." I said. Lizza gasped, but I kept talking before she could say anything, "It was weird. At first there was nothing but whiteness and warmth, but then there was darkness and fire, with both blood boiling heat and heart-stopping chills." I said and shuddered from the memory.
Lizza punched me shoulder, and I flinched, "I had the same dream."
