Q&A #23-Writing Tips

Question: Do you have any tips for new writers? (Asked by Kawaiikid967)

Tips, okay, I think I can do that. Maybe.

When I first started out writing, I kinda imagined how it would be written if it was professionally published. Like no author's notes (which I'm not telling you not to do, but if you do use notes, do NOT stick them in the middle of the story, put it either at the beginning or the end). That also includes proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, so on and so forth. If you think you need someone to edit for you, then ask someone (just not me, I'm lazy and probably won't want to read it to edit) but if you don't, it's not the end of the world. I never had someone edit anything for me, and yes, there are errors everywhere, probably even in this, but it won't kill you.

For new writers specifically, I'd say read a lot of books honestly. Like published books. They're the best references I've had, and the more I read the more words I learned I could use, better descriptions that weren't just blandly pointing out boring things about whatever, and just better development of everything like plot and characters.

Find what writing style you like, like how you use words, preferable point of view, and whatever seems comfortable. Like I prefer first person, and I'm very, very casual (Example from future chapter of 'Until the End (wow a very tiny preview, cherish it) "After that routine we went to that meeting or whatever you wanna call it, which was boring as hell to be honest. It was one of those 'welcome to the Survey Corps and thank you for dedicating yourselves to us' blah blah blah.") First person kinda makes it easier to get character across, as you can see.

Two more things with tips; next is gonna be with characters actually. Please stay in character, even if it's an original character. Like, list out their personalities ahead of time if you have to, don't make up personalities as you go along. And if they're canon characters doing extremely odd things for that certain character, you're gonna lose people. Put yourself in that person's shoes and go "what would so and so do?"

This last part is going to be very blunt and simple and kinda ties in with the first one. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T USE TEXT TALK IT LOOKS SLOPPY AND LAZY.

One more thing, because in the original message you mentioned writers block. Don't stress over it. The more you think about it, the harder it will be to get an idea. If you need an idea urgently, or you're in a rush, or you want to get that chapter out of the way, listen to music, read other stories, watch TV, or look up writing prompts. I put a link in the external link to a Tumblr I go on to look up little quotes and prompts for ideas, which I frequently use for oneshots. There's also a few tips scattered here and there on there and you can always ask them questions too.
