A broken spider

This one-shot is based of a prompt by OfficialUSMWriter I hope that you like it

This one-shot is centred around the Web Warriors after Scarlet Spider betrays everyone. I hope you like it.

Desperation.

That was all that Spider-Man felt as he dived down to search for his former friend. Scarlet Spider had betrayed him. Scarlet Spider had revealed his secret identity to Doc Ock. Scarlet Spider had lied to his face. But that did not mean that he wanted Scarlet Spider dead.

The spider had searched the entire bay three times over but, still, no luck. When Iron Spider stopped his continued searching, he already knew in his heart of hearts that he was not going to find Scarlet Spider. Scarlet Spider was dead.

Everything after that moment was a blur. Sitting on the Spider-jet. Congratulating his teams on their victory. Helping to clean up the Triskelion. He remembered basic events but no details. The rest of the week was much the same. He had let Scarlet Spider die. He had failed.

⭐⭐⭐

Iron Spider hated seeing Spider-Man, his friend (and brother in all but blood), looking so defeated. He had tried so hard and lost so much. It wasn't fair. Spider-Man should be swinging around the city making terrible jokes- not searching the bay for a dead traitor. Why couldn't Spider-Man ignore his emotions? Why couldn't he just look at the facts? Why couldn't he just see that Scarlet Spider was a traitor. It didn't make any logical sense. But that compassion, that ability to see the good in anyone, was Spider-Man's greatest strength in battle and forming relationships. But it was also a weakness after a betrayal or heartbreak. It was what made it possible for him to be such a great leader, until those who he was leading stopped following.

Iron Spider knew that he had to stop Spider-Man before it was too late. He could see that his leader was tiring but he also knew that someone so selfless would kill himself searching if someone didn't stop him. He had tried to be gentle, he had tried not to hurt Spider-Man anymore than he already was. He watched as Spider-Man preformed his duties robotically. He could see that this fellow spider-themed hero was falling apart- he didn't know if it would be possible to put him back together again. He hated no knowing, especially this.

⭐⭐⭐

Kid Arachnid saw just how defeated Spider-Man was. He had seen Peter Parker die once before, he had sworn to himself that he wouldn't let it happen again. There was a small problem though: Spider-Man wasn't dying physically, he was dying emotionally. And there wasn't anything that could be done to stop it. His hero, his big brother, was falling and there was nothing that he could do to save him. That was why he was trying so hard to find Ben. He knew that Scarlet Spider was dead but he still wanted to help Spider-Man in any way he could. He wanted to save Spider-Man. He wanted to save Peter Parker.

When the spiders flew back Kid Arachnid watched a Spider-Man put up emotional walls. He watched as Spider-Man began to refuse letting his emotions show. He watched as no one else noticed the facade Spider-Man had put up before speaking to them.

⭐⭐⭐

The remaining Web Warriors, including Flash who had returned to the Triskelion, had all noticed how Spider-Man wasn't improving. They spent an afternoon together discussing all of the changes that they had noticed over the week. Spider-Man was more closed off; he wasn't sleeping much and woke up panicking when he did actually sleep; the slightest thing would make him jump; he was constantly looking over his shoulder; he spent more time doing paper work; he went out alone more often; he was avoiding people; he was becoming more restless; his daily joke count had more than halved; he was far more serious. The Web Warriors were worried, their leader (and big brother) wasn't himself anymore. They knew that there must have been more to his new behaviours than just a betrayal of trust. They had expected him to be more suspicious, not more jumpy. Iron Fist had sneezed once in the cafeteria and then Spider-Man had literally jumped onto the ceiling. He had played it off like it was nothing, but it was just one of many small things that had caught the spider-themed heroes attention. They didn't know why these small things scared him so much but they were determined to find out.

⭐⭐⭐

When Flash had first seen Spider-Man after Scarlet Spider's betrayal he was shocked. Spider-Man wasn't meant to be sad or depressed, he was meant to be funny and jokey. Spider-Man was supposed to try and high-five everyone as he walked past, not flinch away whenever anybody came to close. Flash kept telling himself that if Scarlet Spider had somehow survived he would kill him himself in revenge for hurting Spider-Man so badly.

⭐⭐⭐

Spider-Man was tired. No, not tired, exhausted. Physically, mentally and emotionally. He couldn't sleep much and when he did he suffered from nightmares. Couldn't Nightmare leave him alone for one night? He was constantly extending his senses to try and detect more of the threats that continuously crept up on him. He couldn't trust anyone. Not anymore.  His emotions couldn't decide whether to over react to everything or not work at all. He couldn't let anyone see how broken he had become. Scarlet Spider's betrayal had hurt. A lot. How could he have missed the signs? When Scarlet had turned around and saved him he noticed how much of a hero Scarlet Spider could have been, he tried so hard to save everybody but he couldn't. He couldn't even save himself.

Spider-Man sat crying on the Triskelion roof for two hours before Kid Arachnid found him. It broke the younger heroes heart to see the person who he looked up to and admired fall apart. The one person who he thought could never break was broken. He had looked so defeated when he realised that Scarlet Spider was dead.

Spider-Man had taken off his mask and was whispering into the night too quietly for Kid Arachnid to hear what he said. Kid Arachnid quietly called Iron Spider and Flash to tell them where he was before walking over to the broken spider.

When Miles tried to put his hand on Peter's shoulder the older hero jerked away.

"Oh, it's just you. Sorry."

"No problem... do you want to tell me what's wrong?"

"No."

"Is this about Ben?"

"I should have seen Scarlet for what he was. Now Doc Ock knows my secret identity." Peter froze. He wasn't supposed to say that.

"What? He knows?"

"Ben told him. It's all my fault"

"Is that why you seem so on edge right now?"

"Yeah..."

The two spiders sat in silence for several minutes before Miles snaked his arms around the elder heroes waist. Peter stiffened at first before hugging the younger back and crying into his shoulder.

"It's okay, you're safe. Doc Ock won't touch you, your aunt, your friends or anybody else who you care about, I promise. You want to know why? It's because you're Spider-Man, and Spider-Man doesn't quit! Spider-Man is strong, and so is Peter Parker."

"Thanks, Miles"

The two spiders had fallen asleep in each others arms when they were discovered by Iron Spider, who found a blanket and covered them up in it. Before leaving he took a photo of his teammates.

"I guess I'll have to wait until morning for any answers," Iron Spider muttered before flying down to his own bed.

In his bed Amadeus whispered a comforting thought to himself, " Spider-Man may be  broken, but it might just be possible to put him back together again."

If you have any feedback I would love to hear it. If you have any suggestions for future stories I would love to hear them too.
