Chapter Fourteen ~ Trebarwith

Y/N decided that Martha had finally gone crazy, she loved the older woman but talks of magic mirrors and faraway Kingdoms not of this world was absolutely ridiculous

She needed to forget about the picture.

She needed to stay away from Martha.

Lewis was right, it was important to focus on what she already had and stop trying to chase something which didn't exist. It was nice to indulge herself in a fantasy world but she shouldn't rely on that to keep her happy, as nice as it was and as much as we all need an escape sometimes it's important we also focus on the real world around us and those in it.

Trebarwith beach wasn't far from Tintagel and it was where Lewis and his surfing friends usually spent the majority of their free time, as Y/N got closer she could make out the glowing embers of the small fire they had started and several chairs dotted around it. Lewis noticed her the moment she started to approach, his eyes narrowed for a second before morphing to concern as she drew closer.

"Are you okay? You look like you  normally do after you've watched a horror movie, something happen at Martha's place?"

"I think she's finally lost her marbles in all honesty." Y/N dropped down on the vacant chair beside Lewis, sending a smile and little wave to his three friends who were currently in the water. "Why aren't you in there with them, you normally love late night swims."

Lewis gave a shrug. "I wasn't feeling it, was actually feeling guilty about leaving you to deal with Martha alone so was debating if I should leave or not to help you. So, you going to tell me what happened or not?"

Y/N searched the cooler by Lewis' chair and helped herself to a beer before responding.

"She was talking about other realms and magic mirrors, even went as far as to have some guy appear in it to mess with my head."

"Wait what? The fuck you talking about?" Lewis smirked, biting back a laugh.

"You can let it out, I can tell how bad you want to say 'I told you so' go on....get it off your chest."

Lewis did, throwing his head back and letting the laughter out as Y/N rolled her eyes and took a sip of beer.

"She got a guy to appear in the mirror? What the fuck, the old bird has always had a few screws loose but this is crazy."

"I don't know how she did it but that guy she sketched, the one she said was my soulmate from some faraway kingdom was the guy in the mirror. I'm guessing he's someone she knows or maybe he's just some actor who she's hired to play the part but got to give it to her, she really got me believing it was something real."

"I'm genuinely sorry Y/N, it's pretty messed up she went to such extreme lengths to mess with you. I've got no idea how she got the mirror thing to work but anything is possible these days, it could've been a two way type thing or something. I've always liked Martha, didn't think she would be so cruel though."

"Yeah me too. I guess she just got tired of living in reality and wanted her escape to be more permanent, can't really blame her."

Lewis gave a nod, eyes watching the hypnotic sway of the flames. "I'm sorry about yelling at you, for leaving when you needed my help. I just worry about you Y/N, you're like a sister to me and after what happened two years ago there's always this small part of me that worries you'll regress."

Y/N felt her heart still for a second, stuttering to a start again once she managed to compose herself. Talking about her depression was never easy, she wasn't fully recovered yet but she was certainly better.

It all started one morning two years ago when she woke up with a sadness wrapped around her heart that only seemed to get worse as the days went by, she had no need to be depressed because her life was a happy one yet the feeling remained, holding her captive. Y/N had family who loved her, friends too but for some reason she couldn't rid herself of the oppressive feeling which seemed to suffocate her daily. It took a few weeks of convincing by her parents before she finally went to seek medical advice, the doctor classed it as clinical depression and she was given medication which somewhat eased it but never entirely. It was a difficult time not just for Y/N but the people around her, she would skip college and sometimes spend days in bed and would often burst out in tears for no apparent reason and through it all Lewis had been there as the brother she didn't have but always wanted/needed.

There was never anything romantic between them, believe it or not it's entirely possible to be friends with someone of the opposite sex and not desire them sexually. Lewis loved her like a sister, wanting to keep her wrapped up and protected from all the bad things in the world including her depression so she could understand why he was starting to worry about regression.

"I promised you, remember?" Y/N watched his profile, the way his eyebrows furrowed with worry as the flames danced along his taught jaw.

She promised during the second year of her depression that if she ever felt herself slipping back she would talk to him about it, work together to make sure she didn't spiral too far or too quickly.

"I know why you're worried about me slipping back but I promise you that's not happening."

Lewis gave a nod, lost in thoughts and emotions as he continued to stare at the flames.

Y/N used to get lost in the world of fantasy whenever her depression would start to attack, it was her safety bubble and escape from the world of reality when things got too tough and lately she had been spacing out more and daydreaming which Lewis had definitely picked up on.

"I'm not saying don't dream Y/N, I don't want to be that guy who kills your buzz but just don't lose sight of reality. I know the world can suck, people too for that matter but it can also offer you happiness and beauty too. I mean, take a look." Lewis motioned to the expanse of water before them, moonlight kissing the glassy surface and dancing majestically upon it.

"Listen." Lewis added and she did, eyes closing to the sound of waves rolling gently along the shore, chimes of harbour bells in the distance.

"Feel." Was his final request and she obliged, sighing fondly as the gentle sea breeze wrapped tightly around her like an old friend.

This was what Lewis did whenever she could feel herself slipping, reminding Y/N of all the reasons her reality wasn't entirely that bad.

Everything started to slip back in place, like pieces of an intricate jigsaw but like always there was still that one piece missing.

Where was that piece?

When would she ever find it?
