"Some of you might know me. I'm the mess of James Rhodes' adopted daughter. I'm part of Tony Stark's entourage." I shrugged looking down at my hands. "Today, we mourn. We grieve the lost of one of the best people I knew. I met Spider-man when he first began his super hero career. Even hidden behind a mask, he was still kind and genuine." A quick glance was thrown back at Dee. He nodded and I turned back.
"We were lucky to have him." I nodded, tears choking my words. My eyes skimmed the crowd, finding the faces of every person there. Eyes welled with tears just as mine did. "Spider-man brought out the best in all of us. He showed us who we could be. We saw hope because he gave us hope."
I ran a hand over my face and sighed, voice echoing over the speakers. "He was my best friend. He was New York's best friend." People wiped tears and children dressed as Spider-man hugged their mothers. "Though he does not, we live on. We live on because of him. We live on to show that it was not in vain. Not only for him, but also for all of the other victims of Thanos. We mourn for them. Yet here we are still. Without our mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters and lovers, what are we to do?" I swallowed back grief, tears burning my eyes. "We fight for them. Spider-man was our hero. He fought for us. It is our duty to fight in memory of them. Without our web slinging hero, we are lost. He must have been devastated to leave his city behind with no friendly neighborhood Spider-man to keep watch. We may not be able to sling webs or stick to walls, but there's a Spider-man in each of us. Stand up for you neighbor for Spider-man."
Hot tears streaming down my face, I slipped the navy blue zip up jacket of Peter's over my shoulders. I glanced back to Tony, who was weeping as well. He nodded eagerly. "They're waiting for you, Runt."
"I lost my love that day. We all lost someone. But, instead of dwelling we must rise. Rise up to stand for good. I'm rising up too...." my voice trailed off and I sighed, clenching my shaking fists. I slid my thumbs through the holes of the sweatshirt Tony had cut out.
"Today I'm rising up for my Peter. I'm rising up for Spider-man. I'm rising up for New York City. Because I know Spider-man wouldn't have wanted to leave his city unguarded. Because of him, I'm going to do what I think you deserve. I may not be Spider-man, but in his honor, I'm doing the job he left behind."
My hand reached behind my to pull the hood over my head. My body buzzed in excitement as the suit realized I had activated it. Stark nanotech spread over me like a new skin of clothing. I watched as the sweatshirt transformed into my own super hero suit. Navy blue slithered down to my feet, covering me from head to toe. Red stripes crossed the sleeves in honor of Peter. I felt the web slingers cling to my scarred wrists and through the white spider eyes in my suit, I saw the crowd stand with tears in their eyes and applaud.
"Hi Ned." I slid onto the sofa in the living room of the 'Vengers headquarters. I tossed my phone to the side and rubbed by face with my hands.
"Oh my gosh DUDE."
"Dude-ette, technically." I retorted cutting him off.
"Whatever. Everyone's totally talking about you! It's totally sick. Flash was even asking if I could call you for him! You were all like 'I'm Spider-man!' Or woman. Or lady. What's your official super hero name? That's so cool. How does your suit work? How come all those markings on the sweatshirt only showed up when you had the suit on?"
"Slow down, Fedora."
"Oh sorry."
I laughed and took a moment to think before I launched into answering all his questions. In a swift motion, I flipped upside down on the couch, head almost touching the floor. "Okay first things first. Im not really sure if I'm a super hero or not. So not sure about the name yet. The suit's nanotech. It hides in Peters sweatshirt until I put my thumbs through the super cool thumb hole things AND put the hood on. It's like the on button of the suit. The markings only show when the suits activated so I can wear the regular sweatshirt and get less attention."
"You just proclaimed to the entire world that your the new Spider-person! I think you'll still have a lot of attention."
"I'll have to beat them away with a stick." I sat up in a flash, eyes locking with Dee's as he hovered in the doorway. "I pulled a Tony Stark, honestly."
"Tony Stark? Oh when he did the whole 'I am Ironman!' thing on TV? That was dope."
"Right. Hey Fed, I gotta go. I'll see you Monday."
"Oh sure, Spider-lady." The phone beeped as Ned hung up and Dee sauntered into the room.
He sat beside me, wrapping an arm around me and pulling me close to his side. "You doing okay kid?"
"I'm actually kind of okay as of right now. Check back in about two minutes and it might be different." A slight smile spread across his face for a second before his gaze fell.
"I miss him." My voice was gravelly and harsh.
"I know. You're doing this for him, remember? And I couldn't be more proud of you." Dee pressed a kiss to the top of my head as he pulled me into a hug.
