One

I fell face first into the mud. The group of girls surrounding me laughed, no one bothering to come to my rescue. The pack's leader, Courtney Rivers, whom I consider to be a she-wolf, with straight, almost white blonde hair and sharp blue eyes, grabbed me roughly by the arm and yanked me to my feet.

I was on the verge of tears, but I blinked them away and kept my expression stone cold as I looked straight into her blue eyes with my green ones. I could see the anger sketched on her face when tears didn't come in torrents down my face.

She pushed me away with a look of disgust, but I kept my balance this time. One foot just ahead of the other, as I had read in many self-defense books.

The she-wolf gave me a once over, taking in my rigged posture and fighting stance. She raised a sculpted eyebrow and rolled her eyes at me. "Ready to fight, are we?" she scoffed, scanning my body once again before shaking her head. "I could take you down easily and rub your face in the dirt with that tiny body of yours." She laughed, her friends joining her.

I felt the tears come back again as I stole a peek at my frame. I was petite and thin, but that's because where I live you don't get 3 meals a day like most people do.

Courtney turned back to me and my face turned blank again. She started walking in circles around me, poking me with a blue polished fingernail. She prodded my arms and torso, pulled my hair roughly, all the while saying things like "too skinny" and "ugly brown hair". That stuff I didn't care for in the least bit. It was what she said when she was done prodding and poking my body like a cow.

She sneered at me," And you know what the worst thing about you is?" she grabbed my muddy arm and pulled me close to her face. "You have no family and you will never belong anywhere."

That finally pushed me over the edge. I pulled back, and before she could realize what was about to happen, I punched her face as hard as I could and fled before the tears could come, not noticing the blood on my knuckles.

I fled the school grounds, hoping no one would notice the tears flooding my face. My eyes were so full of tears that I couldn't see where I was going. Though I didn't need to see to know where I was heading.

Before I knew it, I was sitting on the grass in a secluded grove of trees in the public park. I was just about ready to let the sobs rain down when something wet and cold stuck itself in my hand. I looked down and saw a shivering, scrawny little puppy with its ears back and tail tucked beneath his belly. He looked up at me with his chocolate brown eyes and my heart melted. I forgot all about Courtney and her sniveling minions.

I slowly lifted me hand and ran my fingers lightly down the length of his back. He crawled a little bit closer and I petted him again. I noticed that he didn't have a collar around his neck. "You don't have a home either, huh?" I said softly. I picked him up and put him in my lap. "There, that's better now isn't it?" I asked him. He looked up at me with those sad brown eyes and his stomach growled. He whined and looked at me again.

My heart broke for him. "You poor thing. You're probably starving and here I am just petting you." I mentally slapped my forehead, stupid. "I think I've got something in here for you."

I grabbed my bag and dug around until I found a ham and cheese sandwich in a plastic bag. I ripped up a few pieces for him and gave them to him in my hand. "I was saving this for later, but you look like you need it more. Here," I said putting my hand in front of his face. He didn't hesitate before digging in and finishing off the sandwich pieces in seconds. He looked up at me and licked his lips, looking at the other half of the sandwich.

I sighed and ripped up the rest of the sandwich for him. "Here you go, pup." He polished it all off in no time, licking my hands clean in the process. I smiled slightly as he yawned widely. He snuggled deeper into my lap, licked my hand once more, and promptly fell asleep.

I suddenly felt the urge to take a nap myself. Why not? No one's going to miss me. I leaned my head against the tree and closed my eyes. I fell asleep with one hand on the puppy's back and the other on my stomach.

I woke up to find the puppy tugging hard on my pant leg.

"What is it boy? Do you want more food?" I asked him. He whined and yanked on my pant leg again. I sighed and patted his head. "Sorry, boy I don't have any more food. You ate my last sandwich," I said. He just kept on tugging on my clothes, unaware of my babbling.

"Hey, stop tugging on my clothes!" I yanked back my leg and he had no time to realize what was happening before he fell backwards onto his back. He started squirming around like a fish out of water. I started laughing but I caught myself. The exact same thing just happened to you today, I thought, scolding myself.

As I helped up the puppy, I thought of something. It was today, wasn't it? I remember that happening and then dozing off here. So... how long how was I asleep for?

I looked up for the first time and everything was dark. I could only see the puppy and my surroundings because of the full moon was out that was right in the middle of the sky. Wait. If the sun is in the middle of the sky and its 12 o'clock in the afternoon, which must mean that it's midnight, which means it's time to freak out.

Before I could have a panic attack, I felt another sharp tug on my pant leg. I looked down to see that Buddy had regained his footing and had started pulling my pant leg again.

I sighed loudly. "What is it? You want to show me something?" I asked sweetly. He barked and ran in circles as if I had read his mind. I put a finger to my lips."Shh! Someone might hear you!" I whispered. He stopped barking as if he understood me. He walked a few feet away and turned around. He pawed the ground and whined softly, looking forward, then looking back at me.

I narrowed my eyes and furrowed my brows in thought." You want me to follow you?" I asked again. As if in answer to my question, he ran back to me and pulled my pant leg once, then ran back to where he was standing and wagged his tail.

I shrugged my shoulders. "Ok, lead the way, Captain," I said and saluted. I must be out of my mind, I thought to myself. Oh well, not like anything bad is going to happen. I trailed after him, or at least I tried to. I couldn't see him anywhere.

I heard a bark come from the bushes. I walked towards the bushes and called out, "Little puppy? Where are you, boy?" I heard another bark and walked around the bushes and saw the pup laying down with his head on his paws.

I breathed in a sigh of relief and walked towards him, arms stretched out.

"Hey little guys, I was so worried I had-"Suddenly I was falling. I screamed for help.

"Help! Help! Someone, please!", I screamed and continued on screaming and screaming until my throat turned raw, and even them I kept screaming. All of a sudden a ball of bright white light appeared before me. I tried to reach for it but I couldn't.

I screamed at it to help me, hoping that it or someone would hear her screaming. The ball moved closer and closer. It got so close to my face that I had to shut my eyes to keep from being blinded.

Then, out of nowhere it exploded right in front of my face. I felt an immense pain that I had never felt before. It was a pain the burned through my entire body, through my already tarnished soul. A new, guttural scream came out of me. It was the kind of scream the one could never forget, no matter how hard they tried to.

Then I came to a stop as something solid cracked against my skull and I was knocked unconscious.
