I was frolicking in the meadow near the forest, chasing a beautiful white animal. I had yet to learn what it was, but I wanted to catch it and keep it as mine forever. I sat down and watched it leap onto a branch and shut its golden eyes.

I turned around. "Aunt Kora, look what I found! Isn't it beautiful?" I called to her. She walked over to where I was sitting.

"What is it, sweetie? What did you find?" she asked.

"Well, I don't know. I've never seen it before." I pointed to the branch on which it was currently residing. "It's right there. Do you know what it is?" I asked her.

She looked to where I was pointing. Her brows came together. "I don't see it," she said.

I took her hand and pointed. "Right there, on that branch. Don't you see it?" I said, confused. How could she not see it? It was practically in front of her face.

Aunt Kora looked again, searching. She shook her head. "I still can't see it," she said, a confused look on her face. The thoughtfulness, then disbelief, as if she finally realized something that just couldn't be true.

She grabbed my shoulders gently. "Maybe, if you could explain to me what it looks like I could tell you," she suggested.

I shrugged my shoulders. It sounded reasonable. "Okay, sure. So, it's white and it had black stripes. It has a lot of fur and it's really big, like bigger than you." She raised an eyebrow at that." It also has a long tail and whiskers on its face." I stopped and looked at Aunt Kora expectantly.

She had taken her hands of my shoulders and put them over her heart. She had an unbelievable look written on her face.

"Aunt Kora? Are you okay?" I asked and put a hand on her arm.

She looked toward me. Her unfathomable expression turned into a looked of desperation.

"Tell me, Rara. What color are its eyes? What color are they?" she asked. She sounded out of breath.

I smiled. This is an easy question. "That's easy. They're gold, just like mine."

Aunt Kora sucked in a breath. "It's you. It's the tiger. She's your-"

The tiger roared and ran into the mossy forest.

I panicked. "Wait!" I yelled and ran after it.

"No! Rowan!" Auntie Kora screamed after me, but I ignored her. I had to find the white tiger. She had to be my friend. I've never had an animal friend before. My only friend is Darin, and he's just a boy. I came to a grinding halt. In front of me was a boy with brown hair.

"Darin? What are you doing in here?" I asked curiously. He slowly turned to face me.

He looked exactly the same. Except for his eyes, they weren't the usual green. Instead they were....gold.

"I've chosen you, Rowan. Someday you will know what I mean and know why I've chosen you. But not today, sweet girl," a smooth voice that wasn't Darin's said.

I took a step back. "Who are you? Where is Darin?"

The boy with my tiger's eyes chuckled. "He is fine. I just imitated his body so that you would trust me. As for who I am, dear girl, I am your fate and your future. Enjoy your childhood, Rowan, for there are dark times ahead."

I had no idea what she was talking about. "Yeah, but what's your name?" I asked.

"Goodbye, Rowan," Darin's body morphed into a large white tiger and trotted out of sight. "Go home now. Go back to your family."

Confused, I nodded and turned back.

I'd been walking for a minute when something black leaped in front of me. It was a panther. It had glittering, yellow eyes that were fixed on me.

It circled around me, getting closer and closer. A cold, dark fear rose from my gut, like a black balloon being filled with air until it popped.

"What do you want? Go away!" I screamed.

It lowered into a crouch and leapt, claws gleaming as they rushed at me. There was a flash of white and-
