Chapter 3: "I'd much rather talk about nail polish"

"...when someone sat in front of Rosé making them all halt in their conversation."

"Aish!" Jimin rolled on his bed, his sheets tangled around his body. He sighed. Another day. How many more did he have left? Probably a ton, probably it was better not to think about that and get on with the day.

Yawning he turned off the alarm and stumbled into his bathroom. His mother was probably still asleep so he tried not to make much sound. Jimin brushed his teeth then went out and put on clean clothes.

He looked himself up in the mirror and sighed again. School was really the worst thing that could happen to a teenager. He walked to the kitchen noticing his stomach growling and was about to make himself breakfast when something caught his attention. He heard a sound from the back door. What could it be? Should he be scared? Should he call his mum?... With uneasiness he slowly approached the back door. Someone was knocking on its window. What the hell? Thought Jimin. Does the postman not know that he needs to leave the post on the mailbox?

Once Jimin was close enough to see who could be knocking, his brow furrowed. What is he doing here? With a scowl on his face, Jimin opened the back door.

"You ready?" Came Jungkook's voice immediately. He was beaming.

"Ready for what?" Jimin's tone was far from friendly.

"To go to school? Obviously?" Jungkook stated.

"Jungkook, I told you I would take the bus." Jimin was still scowling.

"Yes, and I told you I was going to be doing it as a favour to my friend." Jungkook said and Jimin seemed about to argue but Jungkook beat him to it. "By the way, I already told Taehyungie-hyung I would be picking you up instead of him and he said it was alright."

"But Jungkook..."

"I don't accept a "no" for an answer, c'mon."

"Jungkook! It's not even seven in the morning! I just woke up, I didn't even have time to have breakfast!" Jimin exclaimed, having run out of excuses.

"Yeah, that's what I was expecting, actually. C'mon, we'll get breakfast on the way."

"What?! No!"

"Hyung!" Jungkook whined, pouting. "I'm hungry!" Puppy eyes on show.

"Aish! Fine! I'll get my backpack." Jimin said giving in to the younger's cuteness.

He therefore closed the door, grabbed his bag and was out of the house in mere seconds. The car was parked on the driveway and Jungkook was already inside. Jimin climbed on the passenger seat, not losing his frown.

"Okay Hyung, where to?" Jungkook asked animatedly while pulling out.

"School, wasn't it?" Jimin answered, his eyes glued to the windshield.

Jungkook rolled his eyes. "Yes, but school is after breakfast."

"I don't know any place here, Jungkook!" Jimin exclaimed, a little bit too emotional.

"Okay, okay, don't get mad, I'll pick the place, then." Jungkook said, taken aback by the older's tone.

"I'm not mad..." Jimin sighed. "I'm sorry Jungkook, if anything I should be thanking you for driving me to school and all I'm doing is bursting out at you."

"It's okay, Hyung, don't mention it." Jungkook finally averted his eyes from the road to smile at Jimin for just a second.

Jimin smiled back, but the younger didn't catch it.

They both got their coffee and breakfast inside the car. Jungkook parked for some minutes for them to eat before he was driving again. On the ride Jimin held both unfinished coffees due to the fact that the cup holders were all full with stuff neither Jimin nor Jungkook knew where they had come from.

They had been talking at a red light when a car pulled up next to them lowering their windows. Jungkook looked through his open window curious if it was someone he knew.

"Hey!" A pink haired girl was waving at them from the other car. She was in the passenger seat.

"Hi!" Jungkook waved back, giggling.

"Hi..." Jimin trailed off a little uncomfortable, but he didn't have to worry too much, since the lights turned green and both cars lost each other in the traffic.

Jimin looked at Jungkook, he didn't seem affected in any way. "I-I'm sorry..." Jimin stuttered.

"Huh? Why?" Jungkook asked, genuinely confused.

"Um... she's your girlfriend and she saw us... she might think..." Jimin didn't even know why he was saying this.

Jungkook's expression turned from one of bewilderment to one of realization. "Ah, no, don't worry, she won't get jealous." Jungkook stated confidently.

Wow. Jimin thought. How stupid am I? Of course she wouldn't get jealous. He facepalmed internally. "Of course, right. How stupid... I'm a boy after all, I... Just forget it." Jimin mumbled, too ashamed of himself.

"No Hyung," Jungkook's tone wss serious but soft at the same time. "she won't get jealous because we trust each other, not because you are a boy."

"Oh." Jimin was lost for words. Jungkook's words stung and he didn't know if he prefered thinking Jungkook had meant it because they were two boys or because he and his girlfriend trusted each other.

Fuck. Jimin spoke in his mind. Am I really falling for him?

No. The cunning little voice answered. You already have.

Jungkook and Jimin went into the school building walking side by side. They hadn't even reached the lockers yet, when a stressed looking Taehyung approached them.

"Where were you?!" Taehyung exclaimed to his best friend. "I had to have breakfast all by myself this morning!"

"Oh sorry Hyung, we had breakfast on the way." Jungkook answered lightly.

Taehyung rolled his eyes but didn't say anything. On the other hand, Jimin was smirking widely in his mind. See Taehyung-ah? See how it feels?

"Hey boys!" Rosé reached them smiling from ear to ear.

"Hi." The three of them responded in unison.

Jimin couldn't help but notice how Jungkook and Rosé intertwined their fingers, making his heart sink.

"Oh, I haven't checked my schedule." Jimin suddenly remembered and started looking for his schedule in his bag.

"It's literature now." Jungkook told Jimin to spare him the trouble of finding his schedule.

"Oh, thanks." Jimin tried not to blush, but he failed miserably.

"Don't worry Jimin-oppa, you just come with us." Rosé was smiling at Jimin, which made the latter's heart sink even more.

It didn't help that Jungkook had the best girlfriend in the world, honestly. Jimin would have given anything for her to be a bitch.

Before the bell rang, Taehyung waved them goodbye and went to find his class, while Jungkook, Rosé and Jimin walked towards literature.

The first two periods went by quietly. Jungkook and Rosé sat together in both classes and Jimin sat at a nearby desk every time. They only had Physics left before lunch.

As soon as they walked inside the classroom, Rosé let out a squeaky cry and ran towards a girl that was sitting at the far end of the class.

Jungkook looked at Jimin shaking his head at his girlfriend's childish behaviour and motioned him to a desk on the corner. They both sat together, Jimin rather stiff all the while.

Jimin was trying not to look at Jungkook, because if he did he knew he would start blushing again, so he rested his head on the desk, looking at the blackboard. The teacher hadn't arrived yet.

"Hyung, she is waving at you." Jungkook suddenly said, which made Jimin rise his head in alarm.

"What?"

Jungkook motioned with his head to a group of girls behind Jimin, while waving in their direction.

Jimin looked back and saw that Rosé and another girl were waving at him, giggling. A little bit puzzled, he waved back and the girl next to Rosé blushed before looking down. What the...? Jimin looked at Jungkook in confusion.

"She seems to like you, Hyung." Jungkook smirked. "She's Lisa, one of Rosé's best friends."

"Ah..." But Jimin wasn't allowed to keep on talking, due to the fact that the teacher arrived at that very moment.

Once the lesson finished, both males got up from their chairs and started putting away their things.

"That was booooring." Rosé sang. She and her friend Lisa had appeared in front of Jimin and Jungkook.

"It's not boring if you actually understand it, I guess." Jungkook shrugged.

Jimin looked at him in surprise after hearing those words.

"Right Hyung?" Jungkook asked with his big and innocent doe-eyes.

"Well, I like it." Jimin said shyly.

"Really?" Rosé seemed dumbfounded. "Wow." She finished in awe.

Jimin's and Lisa's eyes locked for a second before she spoke.

"Hi, I'm Lisa." She smiled.

"Hi, I'm Jimin." Jimin smiled back.

"Okay! Let's go get lunch now." Rosé grabbed Jimin and Lisa by their arms and dragged them outside. Jungkook followed behind.

As soon as they reached the cafeteria Jimin was sure they wouldn't be able to fit all four in one table. Most of the people had already gone out of their classrooms and were now filling the big tables, leaving little space for newcomers.

"Oh, there they are!"  Rosé exclaimed and led them to a table that was already occupied by three people, out of whom Jimin only recognised Taehyung.

The table was long and the three boys were sitting on one corner of it. Two of them were sitting on one side and Taehyung was sitting in front of them.

"Hello boys." Rosé smiled and sat on the other corner of the table next to Lisa. She then made Jimin sit next to her and afterwards Jungkook sat in the empty seat between Taehyung and Jimin.

"Hi," The friendly looking one of the two males Jimin didn't know said. "I'm Hoseok and this is Yoongi-hyung."

The boy who was apparently called Yoongi bowed his head.

"Hi, I'm Jimin." He said warily.

Hoseok smiled at the same time that Jimin's attention was caught by a sudden arrival. Two girls had suddenly appeared and were taking their seats next to Rosé and Lisa.

"This are Jennie-unnie and Jisoo-unnie." Said Rosé as a matter of introduction. "Unnies, this is Jimin."

"Hi." They both said in unison, waving and smiling at him. Jimin smiled back.

In no time the girls became engaged in conversation whereas the boys became engaged in their own one. Jimin didn't understand why they sat together if they didn't really talk with each other. He was kind of in the middle so at first he wasn't part of either of the conversations but then Rosé made sure that he became involved with the girl's conversation. She kept on asking him questions and in the end he surrendered, not paying any attention to the boy's conversation going on next to him. Jungkook kept on craning his neck and Jimin caught him every time from the corner of his eye. Was he perhaps checking on him? No, he's probably checking on his girlfriend. The voice inside his head said.

"Don't you think we should start talking about what to wear for Friday's party?" Jisoo suddenly said, changing the subject.

Lisa was about to respond when someone sat in front of Rosé making them all halt in their conversation. Jimin looked up, surprised. The brown haired male was beautiful, he wasn't handsome, he was beautiful. Jimin had never seen a man that gorgeous in his life. He had met good looking guys, yes, but that was different, it literally compared to a girl's beauty. Wow. Jimin also noticed his hands. He had his hands spread across the table and his nails were black polished. That was the first time Jimin saw a man with nail polish. He had always thought it was kind of nice to polish your nails but he had never been brave enough to do it. The man spoke as soon as he sat down.

"What are we talking about girls?" He grinned.

"Taeminie-oppa, this is Jimin-oppa, he's new." Rosé said.

"Oh, hi, I'm Taemin, you can call me hyung." He smiled warmly, something in his eyes made Jimin puzzled.

"Hi." Jimin said. It seemed as if he had said hi at least a thousand times that day.

"Anyway, we were about to discuss what to wear for Friday's party." Jennie told Taemin.

"Oh, I was actually thinking about that just now." Taemin said and all the girls became impossibly silent. Jimin thought it was kind of weird that before this guy had arrived all the girls kept on doing was interrupt each other but now they seemed to have gone dumb.

While the boy was talking about what he would wear for the party, Jimin noticed two things: 1) Taemin hadn't joined the boy's conversation, but he had directly joined the girls as if he was used to doing that and 2) Jungkook would end up hurting himself if he kept on craning his neck like that.

As soon as Taemin joined them in their conversation Jungkook went from checking on them every once in a while to practically looking every two seconds.

"What about you Jimin? What are you going to wear?" Taemin suddenly spoke, bringing Jimin back to reality.

"Huh?"

"You know, to the party." Taemin explained.

"I-I wasn't invited."

"You don't need to be invited." Lisa commented. "The whole school is invited."

"You surely are coming, aren't you?" Taemin asked him.

"I..." But Jimin wasn't able to answer because Jungkook suddenly spoke.

"Hyung, let's get going to class, shall we?"

The girls and Taemin looked at Jungkook in surprise at the same time that all the boys halted their conversation. Without paying attention to anyone, Jungkook got up and grabbed Jimin by the arm, guiding him away from the table until they were out of the canteen. Jimin was frowning all the way but he let the younger drag him without putting any resistance. Nevertheless, he was flabbergasted. Why was Jungkook suddenly dragging him away from everyone? Why wouldn't he wait for Rosé and Lisa to come with them, when they all shared the same classes. And most importantly, why was Jungkook not speaking and had a scowl on his face instead. This was new, Jimin had never seen him scowling like that before. He was always lively and smiling.

Jungkook only released Jimin when they reached the classroom they would have their fourth period in. The place was empty and the lights were off, since it was pretty early. The daylight was enough for them to see but it was still dim, which gave the whole place a melancholic aura. Jungkook was still silent and Jimin didn't want to be the first to talk.

"Um..." Jungkook scratched his nape. "When would you like to meet again to continue with the project?"

"Really?" Jimin arched his eyebrows. Was he really going to pretend that what had just happened was normal?

"What?"

Jimin just stayed there with his eyebrows raised.

"Okay, fine, I just..."

"Yes?"

"I just thought you didn't have to talk with the girls if you could talk with us."

"Huh?"

"You know... Just forget it." Jungkook slumped on a chair. He seemed frustrated. But Jimin thought he was sulking.

"Any day is fine, actually." Jimin responded to the initial question coldly. If Jungkook was going to sulk then he could play that game too.

"Okay, at my place like yesterday?" Jungkook was still not looking at Jimin, but his tone was a little bit softer.

"Can't we just meet in the library?!" Jimin exclaimed, sounding annoyed.

Jungkook gave in and looked up pouting with his distinctive puppy eyes. "I can't concentrate at the library, Hyung."

"What?"

"I can't concentrate if there are too many people around." Jungkook deepened his pout. "If walking alone at night is the problem, you know you can always stay the night or I can walk you back." He was practically begging.

"Okay, fine." Jimin gave in fighting a smile.

"Thanks Hyung." Jungkook grinned.

Jimin sat down next to Jungkook now that they seemed to have made up. "So are you going to that party too?" Jimin asked Jungkook to make conversation.

"Um... I guess, yeah..." Jungkook trailed off, he seemed annoyed again, all of a sudden.

Jimin nodded.

"Listen Hyung, I really don't want you to think that I dragged you out of there because I was annoyed about something." Jungkook started. "The thing is... you don't have to talk with the girls if you don't want to, I just want you to feel free to join anyone's conversation."

"I don't know if I understand what you are trying to tell me." Jimin was confused.

"Aish!" Jungkook ran a hand through his silky black hair. "It's just that Rosé immediately assumed that you would become their friend instead of ours, but you can be our friend too, okay?"

"Is this all because I joined their conversation instead of yours?" Jimin asked.

"Kinda, yeah. I mean, it is like that every lunch, the girls and Teamin-hyung have their own conversation while we have another one."

"Okay, and why are you trying to make me part of the boy's group and not Taemin-hyung?"

"What? That's not what we are talking about!"

"But I'm curious! Why would he be part of the girl's group if he is a boy?"

"I don't know!" Jungkook exclaimed defensively. "Why don't you go and ask him?!"

"It is because you don't want him to be part of your group, isn't it?"

"What?! No! Hyung, it's not like that!"

"And how is it then?!" Their conversation had become pretty heated by now.

"He... he just likes being with the girls that's all, I don't think he cares about what we talk, honestly."

"Well, I might not care either!" Jimin got up and was about to leave when Jungkook grabbed him by the arm.

"What?! Hyung! Don't be like that!"

"Like what?!" Jimin released himself from Jungkook's grip. "There's something you are not telling me Jungkook! Why don't you want Taemin-hyung to be part of your group of friends?!"

"H-hyung, I..." But Jungkook wasn't able to finish because a group of kids entering the classroom interrupted him. Jimin took advantage of that moment and moved as far away from Jungkook as possible, sitting on a desk and giving his back to the younger.

The lesson went by quickly, Jimin tried all the while not to look at Jungkook and he succeeded. It was the last lesson of the day, since Tuesday was a short day so as soon as the class finished, Jimin grabbed his things rapidly and exited the room before he could get another encounter with the younger. Outside of the classroom he came across a familiar figure.

"Hey!" Taemin said before almost bumping into Jimin.

"Oh, hey, sorry." Jimin apologized.

"That's okay, you in a hurry?"

"Um... kinda, yeah."

"Oh, then I guess you're not free this afternoon?" Taemin's smiling expression fell.

"Uh, actually I am free." Jimin answered, suddenly feeling confident.

"Great! Then could I invite you to some ice cream?"

Wow. Jimin thought. That guy was really direct, he did not beat around the bush.

"Hello Jungkook." Taemin suddenly said, which made Jimin totally bewildered. Looking to his side he found Jungkook had just approached them.

"Hello Taemin-hyung."

•••

Jungkook had stood up as soon as the lesson had finished, hoping to be able to talk to the older before they left, but Jimin was too fast and before Jungkook could utter a single word, he was out of the classroom. Jungkook tried to follow after him, but Rosé approached him, distracting him from his initial target.

"So what do you have in mind for this afternoon? Wanna come home?" She asked him sweetly. "Hey, you alright?" She asked, noticing her boyfriend's mind was somewhere else.

"Yeah, yeah, I just don't know if we were going to work on the project with Jimin-hyung today."

"Oh, don't worry, Taeminie-oppa told me he would invite him for ice cream today."

"What?"

"Uh-huh, look, I think he's doing it now." Rosé pointed at the door where indeed Jimin was talking with Taemin.

Jungkook didn't think twice before he left his girlfriend without any warning and approached the two men talking outside of the classroom.

Jimin had his back to him, so Taemin was the first to notice Jungkook.

"Hello Jungkook." He said in his unnerving tone.

"Hello Taemin-hyung." Jungkook tried to say in a similar tone. "Could you please tell Jimin-hyung that we are not excluding you from our group?"

"Huh?" Taemin tilted his head at the same time that Jimin looked at Jungkook dumbfounded.

"You know, Jimin-hyung thinks that you talk with the girls instead of us because we don't want you in our group."

"Oh." Taemin chuckled. "No, no, I actually don't join them because I'd much rather talk about nail polish and clothes than talk about how many girls I've fucked in the past and how many more I'll fuck in the future." Taemin rolled his eyes.

Jimin looked disgusted and Jungkook wanted to strangle Taemin for that.

"Hey! The girls talk about boys all the time too!" Jungkook exclaimed, defensively.

"Exactly." Taemin smirked. "Another subject I'd much rather discuss." He ended, which earned an eye-roll from Jungkook this time. "Anyway, Jimin-ah, will you accept my invitation or not?"

"I-I..."

"I'll wait for you outside. You can think about it and then tell me." Taemin said and bowed to both of them as a matter of salutation.

"See? We are definitely not excluding him." Jungkook talked calmly as soon as Taemin left.

Jimin squinted at the younger, not really knowing what to think. "He might have said that because you exclude him."

"What? That makes absolutely no sense." Jungkook scrunched his eyebrows.

"I just don't understand why he isn't your friend." Jimin said stubbornly.

"I-I don't know Hyung, he is just different, he likes other things, so he doesn't have fun with us."

"Well, what makes you think I might not like other things as well?"

"I... I don't know, I just didn't want you to feel pressured to be part of the girl's group if you don't want to, that's all."

"Well, if you guys don't want Taemin-hyung to be your friend because he's gay, then you shouldn't want me either because..."

"What?!" Jungkook interrupted Jimin. "Hyung, it's definitely not like that!..." But he couldn't finish because his girlfriend appeared on his side.

"You ready to go, baby?" Rosé grabbed Jungkook by the arm.

"I-I... yeah." He said to his girlfriend and then he turned to the older once again. "I'll text you to arrange when to meet for the project later?"

"Sure thing." Jimin had his arms crossed and he was squinting. He watched the two lovebirds disappear with scornful eyes.
