Chapter 3: Ill-Suited for the Task
"First, Tamashina-mina festival, now Sunset Warriors. What is this, a vocabulary lesson?" Vil expressed with a wave of his hand. "It sounds like a team of superheroes. Pretty cool if you ask me." Yuuma commented, now hyped up for this event.
Leona, however, had the opposite feeling about this festival. "It's cause all this stuff has been around a long time, and the lingo hasn't changed. I'm already tired of it, so no complaining." He demanded, sending a glare specifically at Vil. Unable to escape this ongoing tradition was enough for the lion. Any further problems would drain his patience.
This didn't go unnoticed to Yuuma. She had always known him to be against traditions and that stuff. But he seemed more agitated than normal. "Well then, please continue, Leona. I would love to hear more about the Sunset Warriors from the expert himself." She politely insisted, hoping to stop the two housewardens from butting heads with each other.
Leona grinned at her, finding her attempt to diffuse the situation adorable. "Heh. You're so cute when you try to play peacekeeper." He remarked, ruffling her hair, which caused her hat to fall onto Grim. He did appreciate it that she was trying to make things easier on him.
"The Sunset Warriors are guardians that protect the king and country." He continued on as Yuuma stiffled her giggle at how cute Grim looked with the hat on. The cat glared at her briefly until he caught his reflection in the pool and began admiring himself, liking the look.
"Oh. So is it like a king's guard?" Lilia inquired. "It used to be. But since we're in peacetime, those duties have gone by the wayside. Nowadays, it's nothing more than an honorable title, given to the winning team." Leona brought up with disdain in his voice. If his home had been endangered, maybe he would take this Sunset Warriors thing seriously. But with peace in their home, he saw it meaningless to continue a useless tradition, all just for a fancy name.
"Well, isn't that nice? It's like the title is a symbol of peace." Lilia suggested, fond of the idea. From his experience, certain titles held meanings to them. "Huh. Good point, Lilia." The prefect noted, turning her attention back to Leona for his reaction, who did seem to consider the vice housewarden's words for a moment.
"Well, you can say that. But even if that job has disappeared now, it still doesn't change the fact that it has a high reputation. Many people who are confident in their power from all around the world take part in this every time." He explained further.
"Wow. So, it's not just people from your home participating, but all across the world? Must be a big honor to participate." Yuuma commented. The housewarden had mentioned that there was no magic involved in this tournament. Maybe for once, she could actually participate in an event without the need for magic.
"I see. Then, to become a Sunset warrior, you decided to take part in the Catch the Tail Tournament, right?" Jack asked as his tail wagged excitedly. To hear his housewarden partook in a competition that had honor to it was impressive to the young wolf.
However, the lion shook his head, clearly disagreeing. "No. I didn't participate in the tournament. Or rather, I wasn't allowed to take part in it." Leona brought up, earning some puzzling looks. "What do you mean?" Vil noted. To him, it didn't even sound like Leona was trying to slip through this one on purpose.
"To begin with, it is customary for the heir to the throne to become the leader of the Sunset Warriors. I'm the second born prince of the Sunset Savanna, so I'm in charge of that position." He explained to them.
"I see. So Leona is already a Sunset Warrior. You already are a fixed leader. That's why you can't partake in the tournament." Lilia noted, finding it a reasonable explanation. "Huh. For once, you actually have a good reason for not participating." Yuuma chimed in with Grim nodding in agreement. This was one that wasn't his choice or doing. It was something that came with his birth.
"Yeah, and I also have the majoring boring job of giving the new members guardian lessons. I have to teach them about the knowledge, decency, and etiquette to protect the country and the king." He informed them, feeling his annoyance return at being tasked a duty with no use for him. However, his classmates had eyes as wide as dinner plates at what they had just heard.
"Knowledge?" Vil broke the silence as Lilia blinked rather confused before speaking. "Decency?" Jack stared at his leader in shock, rubbing the back of his head. "Etiquette?" The wolf murmured. Yuuma had a slacked jaw look on her face, wondering if she heard right. "Protect the country and king?" She finally found her voice as Grim jumped out of her frozen arms and onto a beach chair. "From Leona?" The cat chimed with an amused grin. It was all quiet as Leona watched, waiting for the initial reaction.
"PFFFT! HAHAHAAHAHAHAHAA!!!"
The whole gang burst out laughing, making the lion's ears pull back at the sudden volume. He glared at them all with annoyance and slight anger. "NYAHAH! It doesn't suit you at all!" Pointed out, holding his belly as he lied down on his back. "Oh man! Haha! Leona giving lessons! Hahaha!" Yuuman tried to say, sitting down on a beach chair as she kicked her legs. "Hahahaha...oh! Uh, sorry, Leona!" Jack quickly cleared his throat to stop his laughing and apologized frantically to his senior classmate.
"Hmph! As you geniuses pointed out, I'm ill-suited to the task. That's why I'll politely refuse it, no matter what." He insisted firmly, flattening his ears. "Oh, you are definitely being polite, Leona." Yuuma snickered sarcastically, earning a glare from him.
"I blew it off last year and didn't take part in it. I was going to pretend I forgot about the competition this year, too. But this morning, a royal pain in the tail called to make sure I remember." He explained, feeling irrated again when he remembered that morning phone call. If he were king, he would gladly fire him.
"If I keep avoiding it, I have no idea what they are going to do. So no more easy excuses for me." He explained, sitting down on a beach chair. While he wanted to keep turning them down, he didn't want to face whatever consequences his 'friend' had in mind. His friends looked at him, not at all surprised he tried to avoid attending something related to his home.
"You really don't want to give those lessons, do you?" Lilia brought up, finding it rather amusing that the scornful prince couldn't get away with it.
"Seriously? Can't you do your job, cretin?" Vil asked, disappointment at Leona's attempts to slip out of his responsibilities. "The lessons can't be that bad, right?" Yuuma chimed in, picking up her hat that Grim dropped when they were laughing.
Leona shook his head, disagreeing with them all. "You have no idea how long and boring that class. Makes me want to take a nap just thinking about it." He complained, feeling a headache form as he thought about it. However, then he glanced his green eyes at them and grinned wickedly, standing up. His tail moved in confidence, knowing that at least he had his pieces to win the game.
"But this is where you all come in."
"You mean..." Jack asked as everyone had eyes, getting big as they started to come to the realization that they have a part in this event. Yuuma and Grim glanced at Leona, sensing he had one of his schemes in motion right now.
"That's right. I want you guys to win Catch the Tail for me."
Leona confirmed their suspicions, making them glance at each other, uncertain where this was gonna go. "If the students from the far flung Night Raven College win, we can make it look like we did the guardian lesson, and no one will be the wiser as long as we get our stories straight." He explained his plan to them, retracting his claws to examine them.
"THAT'S CHEATING!"
Everyone yelled out together, alarmed by this plan of their sleep loving classmate. Leona smirked, finding the shock on their faces satisfying to him. His green eyes glanced at Yuuma, who was thinking about this idea. Her blue eyes caught his, waiting for her opinion. "That's pretty sneaky, though." She commented, disapproving the idea. He rolled his eyes at her, finding her good hearted ways irritating as always. "Let's call it clever. I just hate wasting my time." Leona responded to her, finding cheating a strong word.
"Did you learn absolutely nothing from your sabotage at Magifit tournament?" She asked him as he just rolled his eyes at her with a small smile. The prefect can only sigh in dissappiontment, shaking her head. Even out of his school, he uses underhanded tactics to try to win.
"Hold on. Can folks like us who aren't from Sunset Savanna even register?" Jack asked, wanting to make sure with his housewarden. "Yeah. They accept participants from overseas. The idea is that anyone can be a guardian if they are worthy. One of the few bits of sense in that country." He remarked, finding something he can agree with his homeland and its meaningless traditions in his opinion.
"There have been many foreign visitors that have competed in past tournaments, so you got nothing to worry about. Besides, the audience will be thrilled to have a team from the famous Night Raven College." Leona assured him, approaching the young wolf. "I see." Jack responded, eyeing his housewarden.
"Jack. When it comes to tests of physical strength, you're the best we got. But the challengers who come to compete in Catch the Tail aren't messing around either. Sounds like fun, right?" He complimented the wolf, smirking in amusement how the freshmen got excited, evident by the tail wagging.
"So it's a test of physical strength, huh. That does sound like fun. Can't say I follow all that Sunset Warrior stuff, but I love a tournament. If everyone competing is as strong as you say, I wanna see how far I can go." The wolf said determine, already looking forward to this event. "Good. I'm counting on you." Leona told him, patting his shoulder. His classmate smiled at him, ears upright at feeling honored to hear that by his role model.
Leona then made his way to Lilia who was curious to hear the housewarden's reasons for choosing him. "As for you, you grungy old ohantom, nobody moves like you do. Gives me the creeps if I'm being honest." Leona commented, a little disturbed by that. Lilia just shrugged casually. Nothing new to the vice housewarden. For the housewarden, he found his type of movement and speed very unusual compared to a normal human. Yuuma couldn't blame him, though. She wouldn't be surprised if Lilia wasn't human at all.
"I rather leave you behind, but I can deny that your talent." Leona admitted. Despite the vice housewarden giving odd vibes, Leona saw him as an essential piece to his game, and he couldn't pass by it.
"Fufufu! Oh, Leona, you say the nicest things. You're making me blush!" Lilia added, flattered by it while the lion stared at him suspiciously and moldy annoyed by that
"But if that's what you're after, I think Malleus would be a good pick as well." He suggested, causing Leona's eyes to widen to that name. Yuuma glanced back and forth at the two as a bad feeling emerged inside her. "Are you sure you don't want to invite him? I'm sure he will be happy if we do so. Should I go and get him? Should I?" Lilia teased amusingly as Leona tensed at that name and snarled angrily, feeling his annoyance simmer to anger at that idea.
"NO! I am not asking that guy for help! No way! It's obvious there's a reason I asked you and not him!" Leona stated furiously against the idea of having the Disamonia housewarden, his rival, playing on his team. Sensing his fury, the prefect stood up, ready to diffuse the situation before it escalated.
"Oh....what a shame." Yuuma glanced at Lilia, who sighed in sadness. The pink and black haired boy moved his eyes in her direction and winked at her. He sensed her thoughts and assured her he wouldn't strike a nerve with Leona. As much as he would love to, he was aware that the prefect cared greatly for the prince and was willing to respect that. Yuuma nodded to him as a thank you, appreciating the thought.
"But this Catch the Tail does sound like fun. It will be a good memory. Count me in!" Lilia insisted enthusiastically as Leona relaxed. His ears were perked up again, and his muscles weren't tensed, indicating he had calmed down from that.
"Glad we're on the same page. And be sure to brag about it to Malleus later. Make him nice and jealous." Leona insisted, already smirking at the expression of a peeved out fae. Yuuma leaned to Grim, who brought his blue fire flaring ear to her. "You know Grim, one of these trips, Malleus and Leoma are gonna get caught in one together, and for whatever reason, they're gonna a HAVE to work together. Whether Leona likes it or not." She whispered, keeping her voice low as possible to escape Leona's sharp hearing as Grim nodded in agreement.
Note: If you pick the other option, which is "this is a great idea," Leona will say thank you for the compliment.
