Chapter 2: Gathering the pieces♟️

After class....

Leona was lying on a beach chair as his tail swished impatiently, cutting through the air. His ears twitched to hear footsteps approaching, and he glanced his head to find Vil, Lilia, and Jack approaching him so the housewarden got up from his seat.

"You guys are here. Lilia. Vil." he greeted them, grinnin in satisfaction to see his pieces have arrived. He glanced at Jack with a satisfied smile. The wolf was the one he ordered to fetch them. "Well done, Jack." he complimented him as the wolf stood proudly, ears upright as he responded. "Got ya covered."

"What's the purpose of calling us over to a place like this?" Vil inquired suspiciously, narrowing his eyes distastefully at the dorm. He found the rough and wild style of Savannaclaw not fitting to his more refined tastes. But that was the least of his concerns. The fact that Leona called for them was suspicious.

"Got something I wanna talk to you two about." the lion told them all simply. "If you have something to tell us, shouldn't you be the one to come to us?" Lilia inquired him, finding it suscpious for Leona to summon them but not come himself.

"Quite right. Why, if Jack hadn't come to get me, I would have kept on ignoring your little summons." Vil added. It was hard for him to take the lion serious on anything. Leona just looked at the two and rolled his eyes at him. This was why he had Jack get them.

"YOU TELL HIM!"

Everyone felt their hearts jump when a loud, familiar voice joined in, and they turned their heads to find Grim standing their with his little paws on his hips. Yuuma peeked out from the corner of a palm tree, waving nervously at them all. "H-Hello..." Yuuma greeted them with a sheepish smile. Everyone stared at them with puzzled looks, but Leona got over it and glared at them."Hold up, what are Grim and Yuuma doing here?" Leona asked suspiciously, pointing at the Ramshackle duo as they approached. He knew there was no way they came by chance.

His eyes landed on Jack as the wolf scratched the back of his ear awkwardly. "I just happened to come across them when I was talking to Vil and Lilia, and they just followed me around." Jack explained, rubbing the back of his head, embarrassed. He thought it wouldn't be a big deal since the duo worked with Leona before ever since the spelldrive tournament. Leona glowered at the wolf as he crossed his arms, dissaproving the freshmen's decision of bringing the prefect along. Jack glanced his golden eyes away, wishing it were Ruggie here and not him.

"Nyahaha! I figured this little meeting of yours would be catered." Grim explained, hoping for a meal to come from this. Yuuma side glanced at him, unimpressed by his love of food. "Do you ever think about anything but your stomach, Grim?" She asked him as everyone had the same look as her. The prefect only came because she found it suspicious that Lilia and Vil were meeting up with Leona.

"Fat chance." Jack replied as Leona marched over and grabbed Grim by his scurff. "Well, it's not, so get going." Leona growled, shoving the cat into Yuuma's arms and turning her around to face the door.

"Oh, forget about them. Out with your business, Leona. Or else, we'll be the ones leaving." Vil impatiently demanded, unphased by the daggers Leona glared at him with. The lion looked at the prefect, who smiled nervously at him. "We won't bother you. Right, Grim?" She promised him as Grim nodded quickly, both have smiles wide as Chenya's. "You better." The lion grumbled, turning back to his fellow seniors.

"Yeah, yeah, if you're so eager. And really, you should be." he added with confidence, earning a raised eyebrow from Vil, a curious yet puzzled look from Lilia, and a hyped up Grim with an attentive prefect.  "Because I thought of inviting you guys, my dear schoolmates, to my hometown." he offered with a smirk written on his face as everyone eyed him.

"Dear schoolmates? How thoughtful of you to say that." Yuuma commented saracastically, petting Grim's head as she sensed there were more to his invite. However, her eyes widened when it hit her. "Wait! Your hometown?!" She turned back to him, realizing that meant only one location on her places to visit in twisted wonderland list.

"Hm? Your hometown? Meaning....the Sunset Savanna, right?" Jack asked, now getting excited to see where this invite would lead. The prefect's eyes brightened excitedly, earning a puzzled look from Grim. Then again, he shook his head, knowing she had a love for traveling.

"The one and only. This weekend is the Tamashina-mina festival, which will be held in the royal capital, Sunrise City." Leona informed them. Both Yuuma and Grim tilted their heads, frowning at such an odd name.

"Tamashi....Mi." The firecat tried pronouncing it but struggle to remember the full name, scratching the back of his head. "Tamash....Tamashi...." Yuuma tried to say it, wondering what it meant. It didn't sound like english, that's for sure.

"Tamashina-mina, which means gift from heaven. In other words, it's a festival to pray for the rains. It's held every year around the time of the rainy season." he explained further, earning some wide eyes and looks full of curiosity, mostly from Lilia, the Ramshackle duo, and Jack. Vil was just examining his nails, glancing with little interest.

"Ooh, I've heard of it before, but I've never had the pleasure, though. It always sounded like a lot of fun." Lilia brought up cheerfully. He always yearned to partake in the festival, and now it seemed an opportunity for that was close.

"So, you're going home to take part in this festival?" Jack asked his housewarden, who nodded to him to clarify. Vil narrowed his eyes, placing his hands on his hip as he approached the lion.

"And you're inviting us along as well?" The model questioned, feeling something wrong here. "Surely, you have no good intentions at all. What's your aim?" Vil interrogated sharply, sensing deeper motives in the lion's invite. Leona only smirked at him, already pleased with his choice of the pieces he chose for the game.

"I'm glad you're quick to understand it. The reason I invited you guys is....Catch the Tail." he answered. His responses received mixed looks from everyone.

"Catch the Tail? I've never heard of it." The pomefiore student responded, finding it an odd name in his opinion.. "Me either. What's that?" Jack asked, tilting one ear to indicate his confusion.

"It's the name of the competition that takes place during the festival, where you gotta try and grab some beads off your opponent's head before they nab yours. No weapons. No magic. A pure teat of physical prowess." he explained to them what this catch the tail was and how it worked. "No magic?" Yuuma's eyed brightened at those two words. She had been learning magic and has been getting better at it. But they weren't strong enough for her to participate in events that required a greater amount of magic. The fact that, for once, there was an event without magic involved meant that the prefect could finally participate.

"Heh, sounds fun." Jack added, already liking this event. A test of strength was something Jack was done for. "There's three players per team, and sixteen teams in all compete together in a tournament. The competition is said to be the highlight of Tamashina-mina. Even the king of Sunset Savanna and a bunch of guests from all over the world come to watch." Leona highlighted the festival, catching some interest from his friends minus an unenthusiastic model.

Grim's ears perked up at a thought, and he walked up to Leona, nuzzling his ankle. He was also into this festival but for different reasons.

"S-so there must be a prize, right? Like a year's supply of canned tuna?" He asked with anticipation. "I'm pretty sure not every event we go to will have food for a prize, Grim. " Yuu added, shaking her head at him.

Leona rolled his eyes at the cat and moved his foot, making Grim face plant on the ground. "Of course, there are plenty of rewards..." he started, kneeling down to the cat's length.

"That's what I want to say, but unfortunately, there are no prizes or awards." Leona broke the news to him, amused by the look of disappointment that spread on Grim's face.

"Lame." The firecat mumbled as Yuuma walked up to the housewarden, watching her small friend leave, mumbling about what kind of event doesn't have food as a prize. She shook her head at him before glancing at Leona. "Still, there must be something that this tournament offers. Otherwise, there wouldn't be any competitors or so many people coming." she pointed out, her blues staring at his green ones for an answer. There had to be something in it that would've made the lion compete.

"Well, you're right there. There wouldn't be a tournament if there wasn't something to it." he added, liking how she made sense in this. "Despite this, there are always a large number of contestants. The reason is that the winners go down in history as the Sunset Warriors."
