{5} The Assembly

***

Mike sat on the couch in the basement, looking through all of the drawings Will had done. Ten and Eleven sat in the tent by themselves away from the boy. They had tried to speak with him a couple of times, but he was so mad that he would either yell at them to leave him alone or ignore them. They finally listened to him and just gave him time to think. Ten is playing with the radio again, as well. The static was loud and the feedback whined. The crackling continued and Mike looked more annoyed as it went on.

He finally looked over at the girl and asked, "Can you please stop that?" Both girls looked up at him. Ten turned off the radio and looked down with a sad expression. Mike went back to looking through the drawings. Ten waited a second then turned the radio back on. Mike snapped his head over to look at her again, "Are you deaf?" Ten doesn't say anything or even look up. El starts to reach over and mess with some of the buttons on the radio, as well, "I thought we were friends, you know?" Ten and El faced him, "But friends tell each other the truth. And they definitely don't lie to each other. You made me think Will was okay, that he was still out there, but he wasn't. He wasn't! Maybe you thought you were helping, but you weren't. You guys hurt me. Do you understand? What you did sucks. Lucas was right about you. All along."

Ten put on a blank face, but the words had hurt her. She didn't let that bother her, though. She just went right back to messing with the radio with El. She could feel that they were close. After messing with it for another minute, a voice sung over the radio.

"So come on and let me know. Should I stay or should I go?" The voice was a boy's. Mike looked at the girls to see they both had nosebleeds. "Should I stay or should I go now?" Mike sat the drawings down beside of him and sprang up. He ran over to the girls and bent down in front of them, "Should I stay or should I go now?" El held out the radio to Mike, "If I go there will be trouble," Mike finally grabbed it, "If I stay it will be double."

Mike pressed the button in making the boy's voice stop, "Will, is that you? It's Mike! Do you copy? Over," Static, "Will, are you there?" Static is still the only thing that could be heard, "Will," Mike exclaimed. There was interference on the radio and Mike turned it off. He stared at the girls, "Was that... Was it..." Mike trailed off.

Ten nodded and smiled, "Will."

It was later on that day and all of the boys were there. They were sitting in front of the girls' tent as they worked their magic on the radio. They were waiting for them to get in contact with Will, again. Dustin and Lucas were a bit doubtful that they even heard Will in the first place. They heard the radio frequencies tuning and then an indistinct whimpering. It was faint, but still there. It continued to cut in and out.

Mike looked over at his friends, "We keep losing the signal, but you heard it, right?"

"Yeah, I heard a baby," Lucas said.

Mike looked at him, quizzically, "What?"

"Mike, you obviously tapped into a baby monitor. It's probably the Blackburns' next door." Lucas told him. He didn't believe them at all. To be fair, this was the only thing he heard. If he had heard Will singing before then he would definitely be convinced.

"Uh, did that sound like a baby to you? That was Will!" Mike stated.

"Mike..." Lucas trailed off.

"Lucas, you don't understand. He spoke last night. Words! He was singing that weird song he loves," Mike continued to try and convince him, "Even El and Ten heard him!"

"Oh, well, if the weirdos heard him, then I guess-"

Dustin cut Lucas off, "Are you sure you're on the right channel?"

"I don't think it's about that," Mike turned to the girls. They were still focused on the radio and didn't seem to notice the conversation that was happening. They pressed random buttons and spun the dials, "I think, somehow, they're channeling him."

"Like... Like Professor X." Dustin referenced.

Mike nodded, "Yeah."

Lucas looked at Dustin with surprise, "Are you actually believing this crap?"

"I don't know, I mean... Do you remember when Will fell off his bike and broke his finger?" Dustin asked. Lucas just stared at him. What did that have to do with anything? "He sounded a lot like that."

Lucas looked between his two friends, "Did you guys not see what I saw? They pulled Will's body out of the water. He's dead!" El and Ten were now looking at the boys, focusing on the conversation. Eleven's mouth was dropped open slightly while Ten just stared at him, blankly.

"Well, maybe it's his ghost. Maybe he's haunting us." Dustin suggested.

"It's not his ghost." Mike denied.

"So how do you know that?" Lucas questioned.

"I just do!" Mike shouted.

"Then what was in that water?"

"I don't know! All I know is Will is alive. Will is alive," Mike repeated which he seemed to do a lot. "He's out there somewhere. All we have to do is find him," The static on the radio continued as the girls tried to find him again, "This isn't gonna work. We need to get them to a stronger radio."

Dustin smiled, "Mr. Clarke's Heathkit ham shack."

"Yeah." Mike smiled, as well, and nodded.

"The Heathkit's at school. There is no way we're gonna get the weirdos in there without anyone noticing. I mean... Look at her," He pointed at El then looked at Ten, "And she doesn't look much like a girl besides the hair." They looked at the girls, trying to think of what they could do.

Awhile later, they had finally come up with an idea. They were going to go through Mike's sister's stuff and find some things that would make them look more normal. Mike and the girls sat on Nancy's bed. Mike sat down a box on the bed and looked through it. He grabbed blush and started to apply it to Ten's cheek. Ten flinched back and stared at it with wide eyes. Eleven stared at it in confusion. Ten slowly leaned forward again to let him continue with putting the makeup on her. When Mike was done with Ten, he moved onto Eleven.

The boys had given the girls some clothes and left them to get dressed. El had on a pink dress with flats and a blonde wig to hide her buzz cut underneath. Ten had on a t-shirt with a blue jean skirt, black leggings, and flats. Her hair was also brushed so it looked neater. The girls hesitantly walked out of Nancy's room and the boys turned to them.

Dustin smiled. "Wow. They look-"

"Pretty," Mike cut Dustin off. He stared at both Eleven and Ten, but mostly at the blonde. Ten smiled lightly at him. "Good. You guys look pretty good." Mike added.

El walked over to the mirror in the hallway. She was holding Ten's hand and led her over to it as well. Ten looked surprised at what she saw. She didn't exactly look like herself. It wasn't a bad thing, though. She actually quite liked it. Except for the skirt... She hated the skirt.

El smiled at her reflection and whispered, "Pretty. Good."

The group walked inside the school. The hallway was completely empty so no one would see them walking into the AV room. It was also less chance that they would get caught. Ten was a little worried about getting caught and someone finding out about what was really going on, but she was probably overthinking it.

Mike looked at the four, "Okay, remember, if anyone sees us, look sad," Mike looked back in front of him. There was an announcement being announced over the intercom. Dustin and Lucas make sad gestures to the girls and they copied them. They get to the AV room, but can't get in, "It's locked."

"What?" Lucas tried to open it but to no avail.

Dustin looked at Ten and El, "Hey, do you think you can open it? With your powers?"

Before they can even answer, a man comes walking around the corner. He stopped and looked at the group. He stared at them with confusion, "Boys?" He was most likely a teacher because of the way he dressed. Either that or he just liked to dress that way. Everyone quickly acted like they were sad.

Lucas leaned back against the door, "Hey."

"Assembly's about to start." The teacher told them.

"We know. We're just, you know..." Mike stared at his feet.

"Upset." Lucas continued.

Dustin stammered, "Yeah, definitely upset."

Mike looked back up at the teacher, "We need some alone time."

"To cry." Dustin finished.

"Yeah, listen... I get it. I do. I know how hard this is, but let's just be there for Will, huh?" The teacher inquired. Lucas and Dustin nodded, "And then..," He reached into his pocket and pulled out some keys. He threw them to Mike who caught them, "The Heathkit is all yours for the rest of the day," The boys smiled at each other, "What do you say?" He looked at the two girls, "I don't believe the three of us have met. What're your names?"

"Eleven-"

"Te-"

Mike quickly spoke, "Eleanor and Thalia! They're my, uh-" Mike drew a blank after that. It would be weird and suspicious if the girls told him their real names. No one is named Eleven or Ten. It would surely confuse him and make him want to look into it more.

"Cousins." Lucas covered for him.

Dustin held up two fingers, "Second cousins."

Mike sighed, "They're here for Will's funeral."

The teacher looked at the girls and gave them a sympathetic look, "Ah, well, welcome to Hawkins Middle, Eleanor and Thalia. I wish you both were here under better circumstances."

Ten seemed to have to think about it for a second before smiling a little and nodding. Eleven also nodded at him and said, "Thank you."

He narrowed his eyes slightly at them, "Uh, where are you guys from exactly?"

El shook her head, "Bad place-"

"Sweden!" Dustin exclaimed.

"I have a lot of Swedish family," Mike explained.

"They hate it there," Dustin said.

"Cold!" Was all Lucas said.

"Subzero," Dustin added.

The older man looked at them in slight confusion at their weird behavior. He brushed it off and asked, "Shall we?"

Lucas nodded, "Yep!"

They walk to the gym with the teacher. They could hear the principal talking from outside as it echoed in the large room. They enter the gym and the door banged against the wall, making a noise. Everyone looked over at them and the principal stopped his speech. Ten shrunk at the sight of everyone staring at them. She had never seen so many people in one place.

"Abort." Dustin went to turn around and leave, but Lucas stopped him. The principal looked away from them and continued his speech. The group walked and sat down in the bleachers with everyone else. The boys looked around at all of the kids around them. Half of the kids were staring at the principal, blankly, while others looked sad.

"Look at these fakers," Mike said to Lucas.

Lucas leaned closer to Mike to whisper, "They probably didn't even know his name till today." The sound of boys laughing caught the group's attention. They looked over to see two boys. They were laughing and practically mocking the principal's speech. (A/N: Who else wanted to punch Troy and James in the face?) The group glared at them.

"Mouth breather." Ten whispered. Mike looked over at Ten. They stared at each other for a moment before Ten sat up straight again. The assembly ended awhile later and the students sat up. They all made their way out of the gym without a second thought.

Mike stalked towards the boys from before, "Hey! Hey! Hey, Troy," Troy and his friend stopped. They turned to look at Mike, "You... You think this is funny?"

"What'd you say, Wheeler?" Troy asked.

Mike turned to his friends to see Ten was right behind him. El and the boys were a little farther away. He turned back to Troy. He stammered, "I saw you guys laughing over there. And I think that's a real messed up thing to do."

"Didn't you listen to the counselor, Wheeler? Grief shows itself in funny ways." Troy's friend told him. There was a crowd gathered around them now and were just watching the encounter.

"Besides, what's there to be sad about, anyway? Will's in fairyland now, right? Flying around with all the other little fairies. All happy and gay," Troy started to imitate a fairy. Ten had come to the conclusion. This guy was a whole lot worse than she thought he was before. Troy and his friend started walking away. Mike ran over to them and pushed Troy down. Everyone looked at him in shock, "You're dead, Wheeler," Troy got up, "Dead!"

Troy ran towards Mike, but then suddenly froze. Ten looked to see El was staring at him, most likely using her powers to keep him in place. Ten looked at him and decided to use her powers for something as well. Troy's pants suddenly had a wet stain on them.

One of the students laughed, "Dude, Troy peed himself."

Everyone laughed at the sight in front of them. Mike looked back to see that both of the girls' noses were bleeding. They smiled at Mike. Ten wiped the blood away and walked away with El. The boys eventually joined the girls and they made their way to the AV room. They walked into the AV room.

Mike locked the door behind him once everyone was in, "Come on." He lead the girls over to the radio. El sat down in the only seat in the room so Ten just stood beside her. Standing wouldn't kill her.

"Now what?" Dustin questioned.

"They'll find him. Right, guys?" Mike asked. The girls were already working on it. The radio was tuning into different channels. The girls had their eyes closed. Ten focused hard on trying to find Will, "They're doing it. They're finding him!" Mike exclaimed.

"This is crazy," Dustin stated.

Lucas rolled his eyes, "Calm down. They just closed their eyes." The boys gasped when the lights suddenly go out. The only light illuminating the room was from the radio. A clanging could be heard over the radio and the boys leaned closer to hear.

The conversation after that was muffled for Ten. She could no longer make out what the boys were saying as she focused on helping to keep the connection. Minutes felt likes hours as Ten tried to keep up the connection. Ten finally came back to reality when she felt something hot. She heard the boys yelp.

She opened her eyes and she saw that the lights were on. Her eyes were half-open and she could feel herself swaying. She felt tired from keeping up the connection with El for so long. Dustin put out the fire and Mike turned to Ten to see her swaying. Dustin focused on making sure Eleven was okay.

Ten felt herself fall into Mike and Mike quickly caught her by her arms. He looked down at the girl with concern and asked, "Ten, are you okay?" Ten tried to answer or say something, but nothing came out. No matter how much she tried. Mike looked behind Ten to see that El looked to be in the same state as the blonde.

"Oh!" Lucas exclaimed. He looked between the two girls, who didn't seem all there at the moment.

"Can you move?" Mike asked Ten again. Ten still couldn't answer his question. Mike looked at Lucas, "Here, help me with her," Mike looked at Dustin, "Get El." The boy nodded. Mike and Lucas worked together to get Ten out of the AV room while Dustin slightly struggled with El. They put both girls on a cart and wheeled them away without anyone seeing.
