Chapter 1: for lack of a better prologue
It was pretty sunny out. Pegasi were preparing the skies for summer, birds were chirping, and fillies were playing some games they invented. But a certain book horse wasn't going to enjoy it when there was a hybrid reformed villain bugging her. They were walking through their hometown, Ponyville, finding a place to chill out or have fun with their friends.
"...oh, come on now, Twilight! It wasn't even the slightest bit funny?" Discord chortled.
"Discord, stop it! I've spent a whole week reorganizing those books, and I need to take a break for a little bit. So I would appreciate it if you go and bug somepony else other than me." Princess Twilight snapped. Discord gave her a long, smug look, then growled, "oh, fine then. Go and do whatever it is you wanted to do. If you don't want to go and have fun, then I guess I'll have to go to Pinkie Pie's because-it's-been-a-while-since-we-had-one party by myself." Twilight paused before she could walk away. "You know what? I think I'll go to that party. You know ya could've told me before, right?" She said. There was a moment of silence after that. "Discord?" Twilight acknowledged. She craned her head to look at the Dracon-Equus, expecting to see that he had left, but no. He was still there, but there was a certain look plastered on his long face. The look of fear. "Is something happening, Discord?" Twilight asked. Discord only replied with shudders that stretched out his wings and spiked up his mane and tail spines.
"That isn't a good sign," said Discord.
"Huh?"
"There's a magical surge out there somewhere..."
"Okay?"
"Twilight, we should probably report this to Princess Celestia. Now."
"But what's going on?" Twilight asked. Discord grabbed Twilight with his lion claws and eagle talons and pulled her close to his face. "Equestria is in danger, like always. But this, this is much worse! I've felt it! We have to! We really, REALLY--"
"Okay okay, yeah," Twilight cut off, "let's go and send a letter now!"
"Spike! Spike!" Twilight called, stepping onto the cold floor of her castle and waiting for her assistant, who was a dragon, to obey her orders. "SPIKE!" She yelled. She trotted over to her throne room, where she saw the dragon, reading comic books, green eyes clouded as if he were stuck deep in this one. Twilight walked up to him, levitated the book out of his grasp, and placed it carefully beside him. "Spike," she said. The dragon replied with a startled jump, and turned around to look at her. "Oh! Hey, Twilight! Back already? I thought you were--"
"Well, yes," Twilight explained, "but Discord and I need to send a message to Princess Celestia. It's urgent."
"Well, okay," Spike replied. He hopped off his throne, and ran into the library room. A moment later, he came back with blank parchment paper and a quill. "Alright," he said, "let's get to it!"
Twilight cleared her throat and then spoke aloud, "dear Princess Celestia, it has been quite a while since I've written a letter to you, but this time, it's important. Discord tells me he senses a dangerous magical surge in Equestria, and that we need to stop it before it causes any harm to any town. If there's anything that you can do to help us, we would appreciate it. Your friend, Princess Twilight Sparkle." Spike finished the letter with a fancy signature. "Done!" He announced. He rolled up the parchment, tied it with ribbon, and then, with a burst of green flame, sent the letter out the window through smoke from the fire. "Alright, the message should be on it's way!"
The main 6 (and Discord) reached the castles of Canterlot just in time to hear of plans from the two Sisters. Rainbow Dash and Twilight flew there, while everypony else went by train. The guards nodded in acknowledgement to the six friends, and allowed them in. Immediately, they were met with the two princesses, Princess Celestia and Luna. Twilight greeted them with a small nod and a grin, while her friends kneeled down in respect. "Hello, Twilight," Princess Celestia said, her wise and gentle tone comforting to her, "thank you for coming, all of you." She then looked over to Discord and said, "thank you for reporting to us."
"For once," Applejack muttered to Rainbow Dash, who nodded in agreement. Twilight glared at them warily. She then turned to the princesses. "So, what's the plan?" She asked.
"Before we talk about the plan, you need to know where that surge came from. As the princess of the sun, I look down on my subjects in Canterlot and throughout Equestria. But that is not all. The sun also shines down on other worlds. Three creatures from a certain world have somehow stumbled upon this magic and came here with the intention of destroy or be destroyed. But, you will not be alone in this, Twilight."
Twilight grinned and puffed out her chest in pride. "We know it already, Princess. With my friends by my side, as always, there's nothing we can't--"
Princess Celestia silenced her by raising a hoof. "I am afraid it will take more than six of you. I will send three more of those creatures from that same world to here. They might know what is going on. But, they may not know of our world, so I expect you to guide them, help them learn about Equestria. Our fate rests in the hooves of you six, soon to be nine."
"What about me?" Discord asked. He looked like he was being rejected.
"Make sure everypony stays safe," Twilight ordered. Discord frowned, but then he nodded with determination of his new temporary duty. Princess Celestia lit her horn, and, in front of her, a bright circle, outlined in white with all these psychedelic colors inside, flashed into existence. It floated above everypony, screeching with thunderclap noises and powerful aura. A few moments later, three young stallions came from that circle, landing on their sides with loud thudding. The first one to get up, a short-haired unicorn with green hoodie, raised his head, wincing in pain, then said, "ow, what was that?" The second, a grey earth pony with a blue hoodie, sat up. He appeared to have no eyes. Well, either that, or it was just bug eyes. He gave the castle a grumpy look, then asked, "why does it look like we're in a castle?" Princess Celestia leaned over to Twilight, whispering, "remember: these were never ponies before, so there are many things different about them. Their culture, ways of thinking--" then a pegasus with ginger hair and purple and green garments sat up as well, then gave his friends a shocked look. "WHOA!" He yelled, "what the Hell happened to everyone!?" He then looked at his own hooves and wings. "What the Hell happened to ME!?"
"-- and their language," the white alicorn finished. She and her former students watched in amusement as the newcomers glared at each other and screamed.
