Chapter 1: Sophie
"Ok, I'll admit, this is really good—not as good as lushberry juice, but a close second," Keefe remarked, after taking a sip of his hot chocolate and yelping as the steaming drink hit his tongue. Sophie and Keefe sat on a park bench enjoying some hot chocolate, even though it was autumn. They had been dating for a year, so they decided to celebrate their 1-year anniversary by taking a trip to the Forbidden Cities.
Sophie took a deep breath—and immediately regretted it. After spending so much time with the Pures, the polluted human air burned her lungs. She took a sip of her hot chocolate to wash out the disgusting taste. "We better leave soon, Keefe. Sooner or later this air is going to infect our lungs," Sophie said, rubbing her home crystal.
"I'm with you on that one," Keefe gagged as he took a big breath himself. They stood up to leave, and strolled through the streets hand-in-hand, their hot chocolate cups getting emptier by the second.
They found a big strawberry field lightly sprinkled with mist, and no one seemed to be around, so Sophie reached for her home crystal, but before she did, she spotted a boy with striking sea-green eyes and messy jet-black hair with a girl who had long blonde hair and stormy gray eyes walking in their direction. They seemed to be laughing at something one of them said. Sophie dropped her hand. As they neared closer, the boy looked at them in surprise, but quickly masked it.
"Hey! How are you?" he asked cheerfully, but Sophie noticed the way the girl tightly gripped the boy's hand. "I'm Percy. Nice to meet you." He stuck out his hand. Keefe hesitated before shaking it. "I'm Keefe."
"And I'm Annabeth," the girl next to Percy piped up, still clutching his hand.
"I'm Sophie," Sophie said. They all exchanged a few words of greeting.
"Nice field, isn't it?" Percy asked, waving his hand over the landscape.
"Really pretty," Sophie agreed. "Do you think we're allowed to go pick some?"
Percy and Annabeth's eyes both widened. "No," they said, a little too quickly for Sophie's liking.
She just shrugged it off. "Well, nice meeting you both. Could I have your number so we can get together later?" Sophie asked, pulling out her phone. She'd gotten it during her last visit in the Forbidden Cities, on her birthday, July 5 a/n its a random birthday not the real one since she'd always wanted one.
"Well, I don't have a phone," admitted Percy. "Ask Annabeth. She has one."
"Oh yeah, I completely forgot!" Annabeth pulled out her phone. The case was stormy gray, like her eyes, and had small owls peppered on the case. She rattled off some numbers, and Sophie inputted them into her Contacts, sending Annabeth a text to see if it worked. Annabeth's phone gave a short ping as a result.
Sophie put her phone back in her pocket and said, "Well, nice meeting you, like I said." Everyone exchanged quick good-bye's, and walked away.
Once she made sure Percy and Annabeth were out of range, she reached for her home crystal, only to find it wasn't there. "Where's my crystal?" Sophie exclaimed. She had it on a few minutes ago!
"It's fine," Keefe said. "Here, how about this: we leap back with mine, and I'll take you to Havenfield with the Leapmaster at Candleshade?" He pulled out his crystal, and light refracted towards the ground, making a beam for them to step through. Keefe took Sophie's hand, and they walked into the light, letting it carry them away.
