58 - Somewhere So Beautiful
Third last chapter guys. Oh my God. And please compliment me on all the Kyle and Penny scenes. I worked really hard to describe the scene as beautifully as I could, and am not at all ashamed to ask you guys to compliment it :)
PENNY
"Okay, this is dumb", Penny said with a laugh, as she adjusted the earphone in left ear.
Kyle's hand slid around her waist and pulled her closer as she smelled in the salty air of the sea. Matt's special place was everyone's special place now.
And there they were, Penny wearing her favourite sundress, Kyle looking awesome no matter what he wore, and they were dancing to the music Kyle was playing on his little iPod. But Penny could hardly hear anything because of the sea roaring behind them, and the fact that it kept falling off her ear every time the moved a bit away from each other.
Kyle smiled at her, "I thought it would be romantic but it backfired so hard."
"How about you sing?", Penny suggested. It was her last day with him after all, she would seize any opportunity to make him sing.
He grinned, "I have the perfect song, but I need a piano."
"Oh chuck that."
He laughed then began singing,
"I remember when you lost your head
Sometimes I wonder how you stay so sad
When you're so beautiful"
He smiled extra wide, extra heart-warmingly when he sang 'beautiful', and it made Penny kiss him lightly on the cheek.
"I remember every word you said
How you were scared because you'd never been
Somewhere so beautiful"
They started swaying more, and Penny laughed as he twirled her twice then sang the chorus.
"So tell me why we're talking when we dance so good
Tell me why we're talking when we dance so good
I know you can't stay,
But I wish you would, I wish you would"
He twirled her one last time, then bent her in a dip, and she enjoyed the split-second, upside down view of the sky and the glittering ocean beneath. Well, the ocean above and sky beneath. She was almost disappointed when he lifted her up again.
"I should be the one singing this song", she commented, kicking sand around, watching the wind pick it up for a second before watching it fall down again.
"Too bad I thought of it first", he said, taking a stick and carving letters into the sand. When Penny looked over she read, 'Penny was here' and then in brackets 'Not Kyle'
She poked him in the stomach, "Very smooth."
Kyle grimaced, but that didn't stop him from holding up his phone for a selfie. Penny put both her arms around him and smiled wide as he clicked the picture.
"Perfect", he said, "Now come on, now that we have completed your request for finishing our prom slow dance, we have more stops to visit."
WILL
"How much time can you possible take, you asshole!", Will shouted as he scrolled through the pictures they had taken at graduation.
He smiled at the selfie Shane had taken, where everyone made a crazy face, except Kyle, who was smiling at Penny.
Then there was that picture of Emma and Matt, where Matt was princess carrying her, which was heartlessly photo-bombed by Shane and Liv who put their graduation caps in front of the camera.
He smiled at their group picture where Matt was taking Emma piggy back, while he was taking Liv, and Kyle was princess carrying...Shane? Oh yeah, Shane had jumped into Kyle's arms before Penny could, so Kevin had to take Penny piggy back.
He had to post this one.
He then looked at his picture with Liv. He remembered Kyle had caught the moment when Will had made a comment on Shane and Liv had laughed so hard. It was a complete candid picture, Liv laughing freely, while Will smiled at her.
He put that as his background, and then tapped his foot impatiently waiting for Matt. They had to go for the post-graduation party. And the asshole was taking all the time in the world.
Matt finally came down the stairs three minutes later, and said, "Let's go", but then Erica walked up to them.
"Matty I have a question", she said.
He bent down and smiled at her, "Ask away."
"Where do babies come from?", she asked, and Will choked on the Mountain Dew he had been drinking.
Matt's eyes widened, "Um...heaven."
Erica narrowed her eyes, "But that's where dead people go, right?"
Will began coughing up the Mountain Dew he had earlier.
"Uhhh, it's a...roundtrip", Matt said. He was not good at lying under pressure.
"So that means I've already died before?", she asked, and Will had to control his laughter. The conversation had just gone from birth to rebirth.
"Uh, Will knows better", Matt said, and nudged him.
Erica turned her big green eyes towards him, and he went absolutely blank.
"Um, your mother went to get you", he said, trying to not sound terrified. He was not ready to give a sex talk to a seven year old.
"That means mommy died for me?", Erica shook her head, "I'm never gonna have kids."
Fuck.
Matt nudged him again, and Will said something excellent, "There are...two heavens."
And now Erica thought there were two heavens, one with babies and the other with dead people. And the baby one had visiting days but the dead people one didn't.
Their grandmother almost murdered Matt and Will for changing Erica's religious beliefs, but Matt's mom gave them twenty dollars each saying that it might shut Erica up for another two to three years and that they did a good job.
So now they were in the car, to Shane's house, trying to forget the most stressful three minutes of their lives.
(This was all based on real experience guys. I swear do not try this at home. Grandmas really know how to whoop your ass)
KYLE
"God I've not been here since February", Penny said, throwing the stone, making a perfect arc with the wrist that Kyle had never been able to make. And the worst part about it was that this was her first time trying, while he had been trying since he was nine.
He watched the stone skip on the surface of the lake, one..two...six.
"Bloody hell", he said, sitting on the rock next to her, dipping his feet slightly into the clear water. They had arrived at the best time possible. Just before twilight when the sun's last rays reflected beautifully on the surface of the lake, among the shadows cast by the hills around.
He remembered coming there with Penny a few months ago, and remembered sharing his news with her, which could've potentially broken them up. But it didn't. And he was so grateful for that. But the time for actually breaking up was coming. And Kyle just wanted time to slow down so that the moment never arrived. He didn't want to. He really didn't. But he knew long-distance never worked.
"This place looks so...unrealistic right now", Penny said, throwing a second stone. Six skips again, godammit. Kyle was gonna say that it was because she was a basketball player and they were good at...throwing stuff. Kyle's lack of skips was only because he was not an athlete. Skipping stones was a very difficult activity after all.
Wow he had just contradicted and insulted himself with a sentence he had thought of in his brain. How the heck did he come third in school?
And what Penny had said was true. The sun had gone down and the moon had come out, casting an eerie glow on the lake. Too good for a picture. This scene deserved to be sat down and just...enjoyed. No pictures, no fussing. Just enjoying the moment while it lasted. Till the sun went entirely out of view, and moon entirely visible in the sky.
The perfect moment, when the rays coming directly from the sun, and the ones reflected from the sun by the moon, both reflected in perfect harmony off the surface of the lake, casting the softest, most subtle glow on everything surrounding the lake. Including Penny, who was splashing water left, right and center. He marveled at how beautiful she looked in the glow of the lake.
"Maybe this is what heaven looks like", she said, her feet touching his now, after she had finally stopped splashing around.
"Yeah it is", he commented, still looking at her. She turned around and smiled at him, when she might've noticed what Kyle had actually meant.
She hit him lightly on the arm, "Stop."
"I bet heaven does not look half as beautiful as you are right now", he said, and it was true. She looked absolutely breath-taking. Her face glowing without any makeup whatsoever, just the way he liked it. It showed truly how beautiful she actually was, that she didn't need any makeup to look amazing.
"Don't say that, he might get jealous up there", Penny said, pointing upwards.
He too looked up at the sky and shouted, "Hey! She's mine right now. Go find someone else!"
Penny slapped his arm again, and he laughed and put the same arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer to him, inhaling her scent, as much as he could before he had to leave. He sometimes thought it wasn't fair that Matt and Emma, or Will and Liv got more time than them. He shouldn't even get started on those bastards Shane and Kevin. Lucky bitches got into the same college.
But maybe it wasn't right to think like that. Maybe those moments, at the beach, at this lake were enough. And there was still time to have more.
Penny threw another stone. Seven skips. What the heck.
"I challenge you to get half as many skips as that", Penny said with a grin.
"Ask for whatever you want already before I embarrass myself in front of my student", he said, rubbing her arm which was slightly cold now.
"Ice cream. I want butter pecan", she said, and Kyle smiled at the thought that she remembered his favourite flavor after he had told her so long ago.
"We're gonna get that after our next stop", he said, getting up from the rock and offering his hand to Penny.
She took it, but smiled weirdly at him, "Do you have a change of clothes?"
"Uh why?"
And he should've guessed it before instead of pulling Penny up, she pulled him down and he tumbled into the cold water. But the good part about it was that he didn't let go of her hand, and he was still holding it when her head popped out of the water next to him.
"Why did I not see that coming?"
She put both her arms on his shoulders, and he could feel her hands wrap around his neck, "Maybe you were too distracted by my beauty."
"My girl's a bit too humble", he said and she laughed before kissing him gently.
MATT
"So you gave your sister a very messed up sex talk, then your grandmother whooped your ass with your graduation cap?", Emma confirmed, and Matt nodded.
She grinned, "Just a normal day in the Lewis household then."
Her phone buzzed and she answered. Matt took that as a cue to look around the party. A rager actually. It was Shane's house, what else could you possibly expect?
His eyes slid to the dance floor, and the first thing he saw was this guy, grinding on Hannah. He might not be, but Matt always saw stuff a bit more extremely when it came to Hannah. His nostrils flared and he walked right up to them and grabbed the guy by the collar.
"Matt what the fuck?!", Hannah asked, grabbing his hand.
"Telling this guy to stand ten feet away from you while dancing", Matt said, and the guy just stared at him. He was nicely built, brown hair, okay, glasses, fine, but what ticked Matt off was the leather jacket. That meant trouble.
"Who the fuck are you?", he asked, staring the guy down.
"Hannah's boyfriend. Who the fuck are you?"
Matt's nostrils flared wider, "His brother."
The asshole's eyes widened, "Oh no", he extended his hand, "I'm Sean, captain of the JV soccer team."
Matt took it, "I'm Matt. And I don't like you", he said, and left them to go back to Emma who was now talking to Liv, while trying to avoid Hannah's death glare that was following him.
When Emma noticed him she spoke loudly over the music, "Hey, Liv is suggesting we take a road trip tomorrow, you know, after dropping Kyle off at the airport."
"To where?"
Emma spread her hands out in a dramatic motion, "Anywhere and everywhere."
"Alright, dork, I'm down", he said.
