54 - On A Time-Out
Hey guys! Here's the chapter I posted asap as promised.
EMMA
"But well, I wanna go to Stanford, but...not as badly as I wanted to a year ago, you know? And I came to you 'cause you have some experience in helping people overcome their doubts, and I thought...I don't wanna leave Matt, you know...but this is my entire future we're talking about..."
Emma exhaled, not being able to speak anymore. This was so hard. She should be happy, jubilant, joyous, but she was not.
"Do you love him?"
"Of course I do", Emma replied.
"Then you should follow your heart", Erica replied, placing a hand on her chest.
"But...my heart is so confused right now", Emma whined, gripping the chains of her swing tighter.
"Your heart cannot be confused. Only your mind can. Your heart always knows what's right", Eri said, with so much confidence that Emma started debating all her life choices.
"Huh, maybe you're right", she mused, swinging a little higher.
"I'm always right", the little girl replied, with twice the confidence than before. Where did she get that from? And could she give Emma a dose?
"Okay, I'm sorry but I have another appointment", Erica said, voice lined with as much authority as a seven-year-old could muster.
Hannah came and sat on the swing on the other side of Erica, tears streaming down from Hannah's characteristic sea-green Lewis eyes.
"Oh my God, Matty's gonna be gone! And I'll have no one to make me pancakes, and no one to bully Nate and Ty for me, and no one to", Hannah's eyes widened, "I'll have to dust the shelves of my closet all by myself! And there are so many!", Hannah's voice went up an octave, "And, and I'm gonna be the eldest at home after he's gone, and Mom's gonna yell at me the whole day!"
Erica sighed and pointed at Hannah, "See."
Emma smiled, "Can I at least get a small Erica hug at least?"
The kid hopped off the swing, as Emma knelt down, and Erica wrapped those tiny arms around Emma's neck. Emma buried her head in the child's shoulder, and just took the child's little weight on her. And it felt so good.
And Emma realised that she had to head to another, kind of, psychic, for a totally different reason.
WILL
"Yes, what have you got?", Will asked, taking a sip of his cappuccino, while Emma fidgeted with that bracelet with that cute crystal. Will had always thought about buying one for Liv. While they had been together. Only then.
"Um...nothing", Emma said, biting her lip, in the same way that Liv used to, every time she was nervous. Ugh, he had to stop thinking about her. It had been two fucking months and Will was still thinking about her like one of those wannabee star-crossed lovers, and he had to focus on Emma's speech at the moment.
"Em, there has to be a speech for me to edit", Will reminded her.
"I know, I know. But I don't know what to do. Should I make it emotional, or funny, complicated, or simple, or", Emma began that nervous rant of hers, but Will put his hands on her shoulders.
"Breathe, Emma."
"Being a valedictorian sucks", she muttered, and Will raised his eyebrows.
"Em, you get the chance to reminiscence all your favourite memories of the school, share your advice for the next class, be up there on that stand and give your parents that wonderful opportunity to take a terrible picture of you that they would show your kids on Christmas", Emma smiled and punched him on the arm for that, and Will remembered to add something, "Oh, and you even get to embarrass Matt big time when he starts bawling his eyes out after the speech, given his teeny-tiny emotional tolerance."
Emma punched him again, "Hey, we do not diss my stupid hunk of a boyfriend today."
Will raised his eyebrows again, "Ever heard of the term 'oxymoron'?"
She threw a sugar packet at him, which he caught easily, until she dumped the entire basket on him, and they both got scolded by the waitress. But he had become so immune to getting scolded, he just laughed.
"By the end of this year, we won't be allowed in any Starbucks in this town", Will mused, taking another sip of his
"Then we'll switch to Tim Horton's", Emma said, emptying yet another packet of sugar into her coffee.
Will held his cup up, "Preach!"
MATT
"But-but I don't know what I'm gonna do without her!", Matt cried into Erica's shoulder, while he felt those small warm hands stroking his now extremely short hair, thanks to the haircut Mom had given him. She had gotten weirdly upset that morning, and had said that she would have one less boy to give haircut to, and so Matt had no choice but to let her give him a haircut, right after he had spent so much effort trying to grow them to their length.
"And now Mom will insist on giving me haircuts. I hate haircuts!", Derek said, sitting on the other swing, and Matt looked up from her shoulder to see her reach her other hand out to stroke Derek's about-to-become-terribly-short hair.
"And now we'll have to eat Hannah's terrible pancakes!", Quinn cried on the other side of the swing Erica and Matt were sitting.
Erica shifted on Matt's lap, "I don't have more hands to spare!"
"You guys are such babies", David shouted, then slid down the slide and walked up to them, a thumb in his mouth. Matt sighed. His whole life was a giant work of irony.
"I can't believe I'm saying this, but David seems like the only emotionally stable person in your family", came the voice which short-circuited every vein in Matt's head.
He looked up from Erica's shoulder again, and looked at Emma's pretty face, pretty but worried face, which was all he could make out from his blurry vision.
"I remember Hannah sitting on that swing two hours ago", Emma said.
Erica pointed to the corner where Hannah was sitting, arms around her legs, leaning on the monkey bars, while her back was faced to them.
"She's on a time out."
"Hannah said a cuss word", Matt added on to Erica's statement.
Emma laughed, that beautiful symphony ringing in Matt's mind, which he was sure was gonna echo in there forever, the melody which he wasn't gonna hear for a long while now, or maybe never, as she said, "Of course she did. But you know Hannah is a stupid bunny. Can you please end that time-out now?"
Erica slipped down from Matt's laugh and nodded at Emma, as she began walking towards Hannah. Matt grabbed Emma's hand and pulled her towards him, till was standing extremely close to him. She leaned down and Matt inhaled the faint vanilla in her scent. The strands of her long golden hair tickled his cheeks as he felt her lips on his forehead.
"Ugh, let's go Derry", Quinn said to Derek. And they both, like the sweet siblings they were, left Matt and Emma alone.
And Matt dared to ask her the question, before he would begin overthinking and chicken, "So, what now?"
Emma sat down on the swing next to his, "I don't know, Matt. I just don't."
"What's there to be confused about, Em? This is Stanford we're talking about."
"You know pretty well, Matt."
Matt gripped the chains of his swing, "No. I won't let you throw away your future because of me."
"You think I would throw my future away by going to Duke?"
"What I mean, is that your future will be ten times better if you go to Stanford."
"But, going to a good college doesn't always mean your future is gonna be bright."
Matt raised an eyebrow, "You hearing yourself right now?"
Emma shook her head, "I'm just saying, hard work goes a long way. And I can do that in Duke too."
"If you do your hard work in Duke, you get a normal job in a normal city. You do the same thing in Stanford, you go places."
"I'm just saying-"
"Why are you looking at the worst-case scenario, when you can have the best?"
Emma looked down, and Matt could barely hear her when she said, "It doesn't have you in it."
Matt got up from his swing, and stepped right in front Emma's, then leaned down to level his face with hers, "Emma Wilson, as long as you love me, I will make sure that every scenario of your life has me in it. Now matter how near, or how far away I am."
A single tear rolled down Emma's cheek, and Matt placed both his hands on the sides of her face, one of his thumbs brushing that tear off, "Don't waste those, Em. These tears are too damn precious."
"Oh my God, I'll have to do the laundry too! I fucking hate you Matt!", he heard Hannah yell, completely ruining the moment.
"That's it. You're on a timeout again", Erica said, and Emma laughed, and Matt couldn't help but laugh along.
PENNY
"No, just no. I can't do more. I'm too tired."
"Please, its just me. I assure you I won't give you a migraine."
"That's what they all said", Erica said, finishing the last of her ice-cream cone.
"What about the ice-cream I just bought you?", Penny tried to counter.
"Hm, for that, I will let my apprentice take care of you."
"And who might that be?'
Matt stepped out from behind one of the vending machines with a big smile on his face, "Hey!"
Penny turned to Erica, "Is there someone else?"
"The only other person available is David", the little girl said.
"Ugh, great."
"I don't like you", Matt said, as Erica got up and Penny sat in Erica's place on the bench.
Ten minutes later...
"Yeah, I know, I keep telling him that we can work it out, but he keeps saying we'll miss out on all the fun in life!"
"I keep telling her that she should follow her dream, not get stuck up in some dumb college like Duke 'cause of me!", Matt too cried out, his voice an octave higher than usual.
"We are stuck with such douches!", Penny cried.
"We are dumb people stuck with some really smart douches!", Matt added.
"We should start a club!"
"We should! Why didn't we ever think of that?"
"Cause we are dumb!", Penny said, blowing her nose into the piece of tissue she had taken out of her pocket a while back.
"Oh God this is the most intellectual conversation I've had!", Matt covered his mouth.
Penny sniffed, "When we go to college, promise me we'll have such talks every week."
"Of course!"
"Oh I forgot to tell you, I passed the Geometry exam, and now I can graduate with you!"
"That's amazing!"
"I'm scared all the chicks in Julliard are gonna hunt down my man!"
"I'm scared every nerd in Stanford is gonna hit on my girl!"
"What if we tell the heads of the colleges to keep them safe?"
"We can't do that!"
"Why?", Penny asked.
"Cause that's dumb!"
"And...posted", came a voice from behind. Penny didn't turn around but kept looking forward as Kyle stepped into her view holding his mobile, "You guys are gonna get me a lot of likes on Instagram."
"Would you look at that, Penny. Your smarty over here wants to make our sadness look funny", Matt sniffed.
