28-Tonight We Are Young
WILL
The most important thing that Will had learned so far, was that if you want a simple blazer, you never ask your dad who models tuxedos.
Will walked up to his dad who was sitting in the kitchen having a salad.
"Hey, dad. Uh, I have to go to the homecoming dance this evening, could you fix up a simple blazer for me?", he asked, picking up a piece of cucumber from the bowl.
His dad smiled wide, "Sure, Will."
Present
Will stared into his room, where, next to his bed, there was a mannequin wearing a navy blue tuxedo with a jet black lapel and a really white dress shirt. It had sparkling diamond cuff-links on the sleeves, and there were brown leather shoes resting on his bed, shining as if there were made of glass. Will stared at them. He should have known what the big smile would have meant
Will tried so hard not to draw attention to himself. He usually wore black or white t-shirts with simple worn out jeans, so that people wouldn't say, 'That is David Fisher's son', and would instead say,' That is Will '.
But that tuxedo, it would broadcast to the entire world whose son he was.
"She is a beauty isn't she?", said a voice behind him.
His father came and stood next to him, his arms crossed," And I asked my assistant about what people wear for homecoming, and she said its a formal event. So I asked her for the best tuxedo in the studio at that time."
"Dad, its a semi-formal event. This tuxedo is too much", Will said, " Do you have anything less flashy?"
Dad's smile dropped, "What's so wrong with it."
"Dad, this is a school dance. I'll look like freaking James Bond in that."
"Daniel Craig did wear a similar one for a movie premier. But you won't look half as stylish as he did with your overgrown hair and beard. Is this how you represent me?"
Will rolled his eyes, "I don't need to represent you."
Dad sighed, "Wear this or go in your dirty t-shirt. Your choice."
Will sighed more deeply than his dad, "Fine, but I'm only taking the blazer."
Will changed into the really-white dress shirt (because his dad bullied him into it), put on some worn-out jeans and put the blazer on top of the shirt.
He looked at his reflection in the mirror. He looked like such a James Bond wannabee, it was so sad.
His dad walked up behind him, "See, it would look so much better with the trousers."
Will looked at Dad angrily, "Don't push it Dad."
Dad put his arms up as if to surrender, "Fine, do whatever you want."
EMMA
Emma sat on Penny's bed, scrolling through her texts as Penny was trying on the eighteenth gown. She had called Penny in the morning and asked her best friend if they could get ready together. Penny's yes came, before she could even finish her sentence.
They had let guys come in between them for a month now, and they couldn't let that happen anymore. She had missed Penny so much, and did not even realise that they were not interacting for a very dumb reason.
Penny emerged from the closet wearing an LBD.
"What do you think?", she asked turning around in front of the mirror.
"I think you look great", said Emma, trying to hide the boredom in her voice.
"Nah, it makes my thighs look fat", said Penny, and walked into the closet again.
"Aw, come on!", Emma yelled, "how will you show off your dress if you don't reach homecoming before it finishes!"
"Emma! You should have thought about this before you came over, don't you think!", Penny yelled back.
She did have a good point.
Penny walked out of the closet and Emma gasped. The dress was beautiful. It was a salmon pink dress which ended above her knees in the front and continued down her legs to end up behind her calves in the back. It had beautiful white embroidery flowers on the top, and skirt was of a beautiful silken material.
Emma got up fast," Okay, that's it. That's the dress."
Penny frowned at it,"Um, I don't-", she began but Emma pressed her hand on Penny's mouth.
"If you don't wear this, I will rip this off you and wear it myself", Emma said loudly, even though I love my dress equally."
Penny laughed, "Um, okay, you vulgar barbarian. I'll wear it."
Emma changed into her dress while Penny fussed around outside, trying to find all the make-up she ever owned.
Emma came outside and admired herself in the mirror.
She was wearing a leaf green dress embroidered with dark green leaves. The skirt touched her knees in beautiful folds.
"Emma! You look so effing pretty. Don't walk in with me. Nobody will notice my dress", Penny pouted in the mirror beside her.
Emma laughed, "Don't be stupid. Anyways I have to meet up with Shane. And you are going with Kyle, huh. Good catch. He's hot."
"Girl, I love you, I do, but I won't tolerate such comments about my man", she said.
"Oh, he's your man now", Emma asked mockingly.
"Is he that really hot musician guy?", asked a voice from behind them.
Emma and Penny whirled around to see Hannah standing by Penny's bed frowning at all the makeup supplies scattered on the bed.
"Where will I put my makeup?", Hannah asked holding up her big makeup box.
Emma rubbed her forehead, "Oh my."
MATT
Matt stood outside Lillian's house, wondering whether he should ring the doorbell or not.
He was really nervous. His stomach was turning inside, his hand hovering an inch from the doorbell.
You can do this, its just your homecoming date, he told himself.
Date, she was his date. He panicked, he had never had a date. Oh, God, what would he do with her? What would they talk about? How would he ask her to dance? He didn't even know how to dance!
But before he could turn around and run away, the door swung open and Lily stood behind the door eyeing him.
"Hey", she said and open the door wider.
She looked- good. He had actually expected it to be that kind of moment where time would stop and everything would become dim and that she would glow with beauty.
But he only saw her standing at the door wearing a pink dress, with a lot of make-up. It did make her look pretty, but she looked artificial. Her red hair was tied into a bun.
"Hey", Matt said, trying to smile, "ready to go?"
Lillian beamed at him, "Yes! Let me go grab my purse!"
What did she need a purse for? What do girls even carry in their purses? It was a dance, Matt didn't think they would need anything but their mobile phones. Don't dresses have pockets?
They reached school, after listening to Lily talk about who was who's date the entire ride.
He had been so surprised when she said that Will was taking some girl called Olivia. He had expected Will to ask Emma.
They walked into the gym. And as soon as he looked at the event, his eyes fixed on Emma standing a few feet away from them, laughing at something Kevin had said.
And, there it was. The moment. It was like the whole gym became a blur, and he could only focus on Emma. On how beautiful that dress looked on her, on how her long golden hair shone in the lights, on how happy it made him to hear her laugh, on what a big mistake he made by not asking Emma to be his date, on how badly Shane was going to get hurt that night for giving Matt the dumbest advice.
Shane said something to Emma and she turned around and locked eyes with Matt. Her eyes were so beautiful. She smiled that heart-warming smile of hers and waved at him to come over.
He turned to tell Lily he was going to go, but she was already gone. So much for being together the entire night.
"Hey, man. You look lost", said Kevin, when Matt appraoched them, trying hard not to stare at Emma.
"Hey, man", said Matt, and patted Kevin on the back and glared at Shane, completely intentionally. Shane just smirked. It made him mad. So he gave Shane his death stare.
And Shane burst out laughing.
And Matt grabbed him by the collar, "Why the heck are you laughing", he said through gritted teeth.
Shane kept laughing. Kevin broke out a grin too. And Emma, Emma looked at him, terrified.
Matt's hands loosened, his hands shaking, and he stepped back.
"For a minute, I thought I was looking into the mirror", said a voice behind him.
Will smiled at him, and he could stop himself from grinning back. He couldn't stop himself from giving his best friend a hug. He knew he took Will by surprise, but he hadn't realized how much he had missed that jerk. He even forgot why he stopped interacting with him in the first place.
But Will hugged him hard and he felt so, so happy. He felt like they were eight again, when Matt used to hug Will, when his best friend was sad or lonely. He felt like they were fifteen again, when Matt won his first tournament as a point guard. He felt like they were sixteen again, when, after staying up all night playing, they finally qualified to next level in Call Of Duty. (But they'll still be never as good as Emma. That girl learned fast.)
"Oh, please, stop. You look like sixth grade girls", said a voice he recognised very well. He turned around and said a silent complaint to God.
Why do you do this to me?!
Because, standing in front of him, was Penny, looking beautiful than ever, arm in arm with Kyle.
There was a girl standing a few feet away, watching them with a smile. Matt looked her over. She was pretty.
"Stop making eyes at my date, ass", said Will punching Matt on the arm.
"You girl looks damn fine, Will", said Shane.
"Shane, remember that even though I love you, I will not hesitate a second to break your nose if you don't use proper language with her", said Will.
Shane put his hands up.
"Introductions, Will", said Emma from behind Will. Will turned around and seemed to notice Emma for the first time. And he kept looking at her for a long moment, long enough to make it awkward for everyone around.
Matt's hands curled into fists. Anger raged in his body. No matter how much he loved Will, he could not bear him looking at Emma like that.
"Yes, Will. Introduce us", Matt cut in coldly.
Will jerked and turned around, smiling.
"Guys, this is Olivia", he said, then turned to Olivia," Olivia, this is Matt, my best friend, Emma, Penny, Kyle, Shane and Kevin."
"Oh my god, you look so pretty", said Penny.
Matt never understood girls. In front of each other, they complimented each other, hugged each other, laughed with each other, and when they were with someone else, they would say how ugly the other girl looked. But Matt knew Penny was not like that.
Olivia blushed,"Thanks."
Penny put an arm around her shoulder, "And, I'm calling you Liv."
Penny was right, Olivia was very pretty. She had these big hazel eyes, and chocolate brown curls on her shoulders. She was very short, so much that Matt was towering over her.
"Well, are we gonna talk, or are we gonna dance?", asked Shane.
