13- And With Every Step Together
EMMA
Emma sat under their tree, oh sorry, ME, waiting for Matt, right after she ran out of the ball and drove to their school, and without further thought, she had called Matt.
She could still feel the weird kind of warmth on her lips after Will had kissed her.
She sat up with a jerk. She had just had her first kiss. And that too with a guy, who did not even know that he was kissing her. Classic.
She buried her face in her hands, replaying that kiss again and again in her mind.
She felt a tap on her head, and she looked up to see Matt towering over her, still wearing his mask.
"Let, me guess, you didn't reveal yourself to Penny", she said, forcing a smile on her face.
"And by hearing you say that, I guess you didn't remove your mask either. Who were you dancing with all night anyway?", he asked, sitting down next to her.
"Will."
Matt looked at her incredulously,"Whoa, this is like, a really weird coincidence, you know, like karma. But I still think, it was crazy, that out of like a hundred guys, you wound up dancing with a guy you've liked for so many years... You should consider yourself lucky, Em. I had to dance with 3 other girls before I actually found Penny."
"Why didn't you reveal yourself Matt?", Emma asked.
"Why didn't you reveal yourself?", he asked back.
"Hey, I asked first!"
"Okay, okay, I was afraid of how she would react. I mean, she still thinks we are dating", said Matt, looking down.
"Same here. What if he had expected someone else, or I didn't live up to his expectations. Oh, and before he revealed himself, he...", she faltered. She didn't know if she should share it with Matt. Would he judge her, if she told him it was her first kiss? But it was Matt, he never judged anyone.
"What did he do?", asked Matt, his eyes glittering with curiosity.
"He, um, kissed me", she said, finally.
Matt sat back, shocked.
"What, did I say something wrong?", asked Emma, worriedly.
Matt turned his wide eyes towards her,"Emma, he has not kissed anyone before. Oh my God, he loves you."
Emma felt goosebumps cover her skin. Was she his first kiss too? No, he had been in many relationships before, he must have kissed at least one of them. And why would he choose his first kiss to be her, a person whose real identity was unknown to him? Matt was just exaggerating to make her feel better.
"Matt, come on, don't exaggerate. He has obviously kissed a girl before."
Matt looked at her, with a glint of seriousness in her eyes," Emma, I'm not lying. Aa much as I know, he has never kissed a girl before. Oh my God, you have to go back and tell him it was you. You have a very good shot."
Excitement spread through her. Maybe she was wrong about Will. He was not that shallow. She made up her mind to go and tell him the next day. What did she have to lose anyway?
PENNY
Penny sat on her usual bench in the park, her pink dress bundled up near her knees, because she did not want it to get dirty. Emma had simply vanished, Penny could not recognise anyone except Shane who conveniently forgot to wear his mask after ordering everyone else to do that. Bloody hypocrite.
Even the blonde dude she had danced with had disappeared before she could remove that mask of hers. Feeling weirdly alone, she had dialled Emma's number, only to get to her voicemail. Penny hoped the bitch was okay. When she was left there all alone, something in her mind told her to come to the park. So there she was.
A gush of cold air weaved through the park and sent shivers down her spine. Mother nature was seriously having mood swings that day. It was thirty degrees in the morning and ten degrees at night. She closed her eyes, and replayed the events of the night.
She was not gonna lie, when she said she hoped she would meet this mysterious stranger who would take her breath away, and she would fall in love with him. But nothing eventful like that happened that night. It was a little...disappointing.
Then her back went rigid as she felt a presence behind her. Crap, she didn't even have the pepper spray!
She slowly removed her heel and without turning around, she hit it with all her might, and it collided with something soft and she heard an indignant "Ow!"
And she felt stupid when she realised who that voice belonged to. Who couldn't recognise that voice?
So, even before she could turn to face him, she cried out, "I'm so sorry!"
Kyle rubbed his face, a big red mark on his cheek had begun to form, darker than the shade of red now splattered on Penny's cheeks, "You could have poked my eye out!", he cried.
"You shouldn't have snuck up on me then", Penny countered.
Kyle sighed, "Maybe you're right. Next time, just turn around, before attacking."
He sat down next to her, their shoulders brushing. He was in a tux, with a silver-gold mask in one hand, and his guitar on the floor,, which he seemed to carry with him everywhere he went.
Penny leaned over to him, "Let me see", she demanded.
He nodded slightly, closed his eyes and took his hand off his face, revealing a bruise which was turning purple now. Penny gasped at the bruise, and he chuckled.
"That bad, huh? If someone asks, I ran into a pole or got into a fight with a bad guy while protecting a pretty girl. Getting smacked by a girl's sandal does not sound manly."
Penny got closer, examining the wound which she had brutally made, and it seemed she had hit the center of his cheek, slightly below his right eye. She was so glad it was not the eye.
"Penny...", Kyle began and Penny felt his breath tickle her face as she now realised how close their faces really were. She sucked in a breath, and Kyle's eyes flew open.
She stared into those deep hazel eyes, with flecks of gold around the pupil, strangely illuminated by the lamp post near their bench. His eyes seemed to search her own, asking something, but she didn't know what. She watched his eyes travel down her face and rest on her lips, as did her eyes. They were so close, it would just take a small movement to put her lips on his.
But then that fucking rational voice in her head said, He has a fucking girlfriend.
She cleared her throat and stepped back, and observed Kyle's expression. His eyes were narrowed, focused on hers, and there was a small smile playing on his lips. But that expression changed in the blink of an eye, back to the amused, and still-in-pain expression he had before.
But her mind still wanted to lean forward in front of him, and look into those eyes, feel his breath on her cheeks. She ogled at herself. What the heck was happening to her? How could she have feelings for Matt and Kyle together?!
She sat back down and he tipped his head back, closed his eyes and faced the moon, while the cold breeze caressed his face, which looked serene in the flickering light of the lamp post combined with the pale moonlight.
"Ah, the wind feels good", he said, pretending that moment never happened. Penny wrapped her arms around herself and shivered. Kyle seemed to have noticed that, when he took his blazer off and handed it to Penny, who took it immediately. It was so warm, so soft. She inhaled his smell of mint and...apple spice?
"Why did you come here?", Kyle asked.
"You first."
"I just had this feeling that I should come here. My night wasn't that fun", Kyle said.
"Oh yeah?", Penny said, "Tell me about it."
"This girl kept bugging me to dance with her, and when I did, she was almost climbing on top of me. She was literally eye-groping me the entire time, and just wouldn't leave me alone. So I left before 12, because I seriously did not want to see that face", Kyle said with a shudder, and Penny laughed.
"More eventful than my night, that's for sure", she said with a sigh, "All I got was a five-minute dance with this tall blonde dude who kept stepping on my toes", she said, "Not even a proper dance."
Kyle got up and held his hand out to her, "Well, we're here now. How about a proper dance?"
Penny took that hand without hesitation, and felt her skin burn up, when he slid one arm around her waist, "What about the music?", she inquired.
Kyle smiled, "I know the perfect song", he said, then burst into her favourite High School Musical song.
"Take my hand, take a breath
Pull me close and take one step
Keep your eyes locked to mine
And let the music be your guide Won't you promise me?"
Penny sang, "Now won't you promise me? That you'll never forget"
"We'll keep dancing
To keep dancing wherever we go next"
Then they sang together.
"It's like catching lightning
The chances of finding someone like you
It's one in a million, the chances to feeling
The way we do
And with every step together
We just keep on getting betterSo can I have this dance?
(Can I have this dance?)
Can I have this dance? "
Kyle laughed after they finished, "We totally messed up Troy and Gabriela's parts."
Penny grinned, "But it sounded perfect nevertheless."
Kyle's phone rang and he picked it up and listened to it intently, then cut it almost as fast as he had picked up.
"I'm sorry, but I have to go", he said, "but I had fun."
"I should be the one to say sorry. Bye, Kyle", Penny said, as Kyle retreated to his car, and drove away, only after which she realised she still had his blazer. She inhaled his scent once more, which had now become faint, after mixing with her perfume.
It had been an eventful night after all.
