Chapter 2
Samuel was really nervous about telling Gabriella of his condition. They were close, and he didn't mention cancer to her. She was defiantly going to be upset for sure. He wanted to tell her in person so he called.
"Hey Gabby, can we meet up at Vientè Café in an hour please?"
"Sure, what's up?"
"I have something I need to tell you in person."
"Okay then, see you there."
That was weird, Gabriella thought. If something had to be said in person, then it must be a serious matter. With curiosity on her mind, Gabriella drove to Vientè Café where she found Samuel sitting with her favorite drink, hot chocolate. She smiled to herself because he remembered all of the things she liked, which is more than she could say for her boyfriend lately. She then made her way to the table and sat across from Samuel.
"So, what did you want to talk about?"
Samuel looked down and said, "I have cancer and I have been given two weeks to live."
Gabriella was in pure shock. She didn't know what to say or do. Should she try and comfort him about his life expectancy or should she yell at him for not telling her?
"How long have you known?"
"I have been treating my cancer for a year. It started in my prostate and reappeared in my liver."
Everything just made sense to Gabriella now. There were some days where he looked sickly and pale, but when she asked, he would brush it off. She was fuming. They were close, or so she thought and he didn't bother to tell her about something that drastic in his life.
"Why in the world didn't you tell me? Am I not that important in your life? Do all these years of friendship mean nothing to you?! Come on now, answer me!"
"I didn't tell you because I was scared, okay!"
Samuel looked like he was on the verge of tears and Gabriella just wanted to hold him in her arms and tell him that everything would be okay.
"I was scared that if I told you, you wouldn't want anything to do with me." Tears started to roll down Samuel's cheeks.
Gabriella's fury faded away and she said "There is no need to be scared. No matter what, I will always be here for you." Gabrielle looked into his eyes and wiped his tears with her fingers.
"Thanks, I really appreciate it." He said while sniffling.
"No problem, that's what friends were for. Anyway, what are you going to do?"
"My chances of living rides on getting a liver donor fast enough. Just in case I don't get a donor in time, I want just want to do some things that I always wanted to do."
"You know what you should do, create a list of all the things you want to do and we can try to accomplish it together, what do you say?"
"Great idea! Meet back here tomorrow morning?"
"Yep, make sure you have the list"
As Gabriella made her way back home, she couldn't help but cry. She could possibly lose her best friend. The person who has always been there for her, the person who always defended her and now the person knocking on the doors of death. Before she knew it, she was back at her apartment when she and her boyfriend Daniel lived. Close to the door, she found several suitcases and she wondered where they came from.
"Daniel, where did these suitcases come from and why are they near the door?"
"Sorry about that. I don't know how to say this, but I am breaking up with you."
Tears started to form in her eyes once more "Why? Am I not good enough for you?"
"It's not that, you are perfect, just not for me. I don't think we really love each other but are trying to convince ourselves. Lying to ourselves is not going to do us any good. We are not really happy and you can find somebody better."
Tears came flooding down her cheeks for the second time today. Why was everyone around her leaving? First Samuel and now Daniel.
She said to Daniel "Just leave. Make sure you have all of your things and go!"
He hurried to get all of his items that weren't packed and then he left. Gabriella thought she should have seen this coming, but he had a point. Her relationship with him felt comfortable and that was it. There were no sparks, and they had no chemistry. Maybe it was for the best, maybe she would find someone who was right for her. She fell asleep on her couch with Samuel on her mind.
