003. GLOW

001. NATURAL GLOW

A. UNDERSTANDING LIGHT

Using Photos

When the light is directly behind someone, the entire body glows.

We see the light is coming from the side of the model. The hair, normally, would only "glow" on the side of the light, but because the model is standing with her shoulder back, the hair also glows.

When the light is above the model, it not only makes the model glow but also lights up the face. We can also see that glow fades as the light continues to go down the model's body. You can also see that the light is yellow instead of a whitish color.

B. EXAMPLE

In this cover, we can see that the light is coming from behind the model. So, applying what we've learned from the previous photos, her entire body will glow.

1) Create a new layer behind the model. Use the eyedropper tool to pick the lightest color from the background and begin drawing a glow behind the model. Change the blend mode to Linear Dodge (Add).

2) Create a new layer above the model and make it a clipping mask. Use the same color and draw around the model. Change the blend mode to Linear Dodge (Add). But instead of the last layer, you want to make the glow softer and lighter.

3) We also have to remember that when light is hitting from us behind, the model will lose brightness because it's basically creating a shadow.

002. "UNNATURAL GLOW" (COLORED)
(
To be honest, I don't know what
to title this type of glow, so
this is what we're going with.)

 * THESE ARE BASICALLY THE SAME PROCESS WITH SLIGHT DIFFERENCE.

Example

1) Using the color of your choice (I normally chose one from the background using the eyedropper tool), draw around the model. Change the blend mode to Linear Dodge (Add).

2) Using the darker color, draw behind the model. Change the blend mode to Linear Dodge (Add).

3) Using a similar color, use a soft brush to draw on the faces. Change the blend mode to Color. This will make it resemble a glow.

And you're done!
