Chapter 10: Defy The Owl Lady With Lies
Luz was sitting on the couch the next day, King on her lap and Eda explaining Hexes Hold'em as she played against Owlbert, who was wearing a green visor.
Eda put a card down on the table. Lightning came from the cards, sending Owlbert flying for cover behind the side of the table. The cards all stood and roared. Owlbert's cards surged forward and attacked Eda's, making Owlbert smirk.
"Now when it looks like the deck is stacked against you, that's when you break out the wildcard." Eda held up a card with a tower on it. It glowed green, and Owlbert's cards disappeared in a flash of fire. Fiery letters spelling out "WINNER: EDA" appeared and disappeared over the table. Owlbert hopped back on the table and hooted at Eda, his wings extended.
"Woo, I win! In your adorable owl face. Ah, I love the feeling of victory; it feels...fluffy?" Eda said, a confused look overtaking her face. "Eda, it's happening again." Luz said, pointing at the witch.
"Your curse is returning!" King yelled, leaping off of Luz's lap. Eda yelped as she looked at her arms, before going up the stairs to her room. Luz picked up the deck of cards as she, King and Owlbert followed after her.
They caught up to her and watched as Eda opened the chest that she started keeping her elixirs in. It was empty. "Oh boy." Eda huffed, "this is terrible, I'm out of elixir."
"Last time you turned into this." Luz held up the human scroll--she still needed to figure out what it was called--with a picture of the Owl Beast on screen. "I know I should be repulsed, but that look is fierce." Eda smirked after peering at the picture.
"Eda!" Luz glared, curses were nothing to joke about. "Alright, alright, keep your pants on. We'll head to the market." Eda rolled her eyes at her apprentice.
"You get your elixirs at the market? You don't make them yourself?" Luz asked as King ran out of the room yelling something about stealing. "Yup, the ingredients are super rare or expensive. So I just buy the elixir itself, much cheaper that way." Eda explained.
Luz stood up to follow after King. "Hey before we go, would anyone like to play one more hand of Hexes Hold'em?" Eda patted her pocket "Hey, where are my cards?" Luz held the cards up to Owlbert "Take these and fly ahead. She'll have to follow us."
Owlbert flew away with the cards as Eda gave chase. "Owlbert, you sore loser, gimme back my cards!" Luz meanwhile, quickly headed to her room and grabbed her bag. Making sure her elixir bottles were inside. Perhaps she could restock her own elixirs.
She slung the strap over her head and headed downstairs, the front door was open and she could still see Eda running after Owlbert in the distance. King climbed up onto her shoulder "onward loyal minion, to the market!" He shouted, Luz chuckled as she ran after Eda, Hooty closing the door behind them and yelling goodbye.
Luz eventually caught up to Eda, the Owl Lady banging on a metal grate of a shop in the market. "Hey, open up, Morton!" She called. "Uh, ju--...just a minute!" A voice replied from inside the shop. King leaped off of Luz's shoulder and went over to a nearby bench and sat down.
Luz hummed looking over the shop before turning to Eda. "So does this guy sell Potions like you?" She asked as Eda banged on the grate again. "Yeah, he sells all kinds. Though he doesn't have any of the creative potions I make." She snorted.
Luz tapped her fingers against the strap of her bag, turning her head to look at the market and seeing some demon hunters nearby. She looked away quickly, "hey Eda, could I get some snails and look around the market?" She asked, looking up at the Owl Lady.
Eda looked down at her and thought for a moment, then shrugged "sure why not? Just don't get scammed." She pulled out a change purse and dumped some coins into her palm. "20 snails should be enough for something right? Don't spend it all in one place, kid." She winked, giving Luz the coins.
Luz rolled her eyes "thanks Eda." She put the coins in her pocket, 20 snails would probably be enough to get her an elixir or two. That is if she was able to find anyone who sold it.
Luz walked away as Eda banged on the grate again, it finally opening and the shop owner apologizing. Ignoring it, Luz looked around at the other stalls, frowning when she didn't see any other potions stands nearby. However, she did spot her friends.
Deciding to wait for Eda to leave the stand so she could see about her own elixirs, she headed towards her friends to see what they were up to.
Luz ran up to Willow and Gus "heya friends!" She called, gaining their attention, then noticing their dejected looks she added "what's wrong?" She slowed down to a stop beside them.
"Them." Willow pointed to a group of teens in front of a food stand. Two of the teens were laughing while Amity was staring at a potion bottle, the last of the group was a three eyed girl watching the others.
"Amity's having a moonlight conjuring and invited everyone but me." Willow continued, Gus summoned his scroll "And she keeps posting about it on her Penstagram account." Luz squinted at the scroll, reading it aloud "It's conjuring night! No dorks allowed"? What a jerk!" She scowled for a moment before asking "what's a moonlight conjuring?"
"You spend the night at someone's house, telling stories, playing games..." Willow then pulled out a book "Then you bring something to life with moon magic!" She explained. Luz hummed, looking over the pictures in the book "sounds fun!"
"Gus and I have never been to one. You need at least three people and--" Willow started before Luz cut her off "Well we're three people, we can have our own moonlight conjuring!"
Amity and her friends walked over, the three eyed girl in the lead, laughed. "Sorry you couldn't get an invite to the conjuring, Willow. Only real witches allowed." She looked over at Amity, who sighed "Leave her alone, Boscha. It's not her fault she was born without talent."
The group left as Willow growled, vines growing up from the ground at her feet. Luz slapped the tallest vine, the plant retreating "Don't waste your time getting thorny over them. 'Cause we're gonna have our own moonlight conjuring, and I bet ours will be 10 times more fun."
"Are you serious? This was on my bucket list. After owning a real human bucket!" Gus pulled out a list and checked something off. Luz blinked "uh huh, anyways. I'll go tell Eda." She ran ahead to the stand Eda was at.
"...if anyone has what you need, it's him." Morton was saying, as Luz stopped beside the Owl Lady. "Hey Eda, Gus and Willow and I are gonna do a moonlight conjuring and stick it to Amity. So can we--"
"Not tonight, I'm going out. I need you to watch the house, I have many precious objects in there." Eda cut her off, grabbing her staff and starting to walk. "Like me! Weh." King said as Eda picked him up by his collar. "You're coming with me. I need an extra pair of eyes looking out for pickpockets, and an extra pair of hands in case I want to pickpocket."
"Pickpocket!" They both cheered. "Then, maybe they can come to the house and--" but Luz was again cut off by Eda "No! Besides, conjurings are dumb; sitting in a circle holding hands. Pft. It's like magic for babies." She walked off, Luz growling in annoyance.
Willow and Gus caught up to her, "Luz! What did Eda say?" Willow asked. "So... guys..." Gus suddenly pointed up at the sky "Oh, look! The moon is rising into place. And the celestial powers only align once a year."
"Oh, I can't believe I finally have enough friends for a moonlight conjuring! Thank you, Luz! Did Eda say it was okay?" Willow looked back at Luz, who was having an internal conflict on if she should say yes or no.
"Uhm... yes? Definitely. Absolutely. We can do it at the Owl House." Luz laughed nervously. "Yes!" Gus cheered, "oh, you're the best!" Willow hugged her, Luz stiffened at the sudden contact. Willow didn't seem to notice as she let go and started cheering with Gus.
"We're gonna do a conjuring! We're gonna do a conjuring! Conjuring! Conjuring!" Luz looked up at the moon, nervous and unable to relax. Luz let out a slow breath and looked back at her friends, what was she doing?
She shook her head, "alright guys, come by around... hmm, 9:30. Eda and King should be out of the house by then. In the meantime I need to hit the market, see you later?" They nodded and the three waved goodbye as they split ways. Luz headed over to the stand that Eda was at earlier.
Morton noticed her approaching "hello, what can I do for you?" He asked, he must not have noticed her with Eda or he just didn't care, either way it was fine with Luz. She stopped in front of the stand and pulled out one of the empty elixir bottles from her bag. "I just need a few of these." She replied.
He picked up the bottle and looked over the tag that was still on it. "Let me check." Luz nodded as Morton put the bottle down and headed deeper into the stall. Luz put the bottle back in her bag as she waited.
"Good news!" He called, returning with a few elixirs. Luz perked up as he placed them on the counter "how much?" She asked. "Ten snails each." He replied.
"Two then." She took the snails Eda gave her out of her pocket, recounting it before handing it over and taking the two elixirs. "Anything else?" Morton asked, putting the other elixirs out of sight. Luz was about to shake her head, but then thought about it for a moment. "Actually, I have a question. Do you know what the elixir is called?"
Morton hummed, thinking. "I believe the potion is called Lupus Domitor, pretty sure it means wolf tamer or something along those lines." Luz thanked him before heading back to the Owl House, she wanted to see if she could find and make the potion herself sometime. That would be a task for another day though, she had a moonlight conjuring to prepare for, but first...
Once Luz reached the forest path to the Owl House, she pulled out the mirror and held it for a moment, glaring at the device. After a moment she sighed, her face morphing into a neutral expression as she flipped the mirror open and pushed the button before she could back out.
It took a minute before Kikimora answered, her face appearing on the screen. "I assume you're reporting in?" She asked with a tilt of her head. "Yes." Luz replied, before continuing "did you know that the Owl Lady is cursed? She turns into a murderous Owl Beast sometimes." Luz commented, sarcastically.
"Yes we already knew this information from Lilith. The Emperor wanted to see how much information you could dig up yourself and use it to your advantage." Kikimora replied, Luz suppressed an eye roll "it would have been helpful to know that bit of information before I was almost killed, but anyways the Owl Beast has a weakness to light." Luz informed.
"On the weekends Eda runs her stand while on the weekdays she sells her Potions and elixirs. So far I have tried to get the key once but I almost got caught by King, the Owl Lady's companion." Luz fudged a bit, she wasn't going to tell Kikimora she got startled by King.
Kikimora nodded "is that all you have to report?" She asked, Luz thought for a moment. There wasn't really anything else of importance to report "no that's it." Luz replied. "I'll let the Emperor know of the new information you have provided." Kikimora swiftly hung up and Luz put the mirror back in her bag.
The rest of the afternoon was mostly spent reading with King, eating lunch, and watching Eda play more Hexes Hold'em. Soon crickets started chirping as night came, Eda had gone to get ready for the Night Market.
Luz was anxiously sitting on the couch, King was elsewhere in the house. It was a little past 9 when Eda came down the stairs, she was putting a cloak on when she spoke "Luz, you're in charge while I'm out. Make sure Hooty doesn't get into any trouble." There was a muffled "hoot, hoot" behind the front door and it swung open "I don't need a babysitter. I'm a big boy house!" Hooty exclaimed.
"Don't worry Owl Lady, the house will still be here when you get back." Luz did a mock salute and Eda squinted at her, both of them ignoring the house demon. "You're acting suspicious." Eda commented, Luz stopped drumming her fingers on her knees and crossed her arms. "Am not. Anyways, where's King?" Eda smirked opening her cloak to reveal King, snoring, strapped in a pink baby carrier.
"He's right here. His little body just conks out when he's weightless. Look at this." Eda swayed side to side, King not waking as he moved like a ragdoll. Luz 'awwed' at the sight. "Anyway, really going now..." Eda walked outside and Luz followed her, she summoned her staff and turned to Luz. "And one more thing Luz... if you mess up the house, I will never trust you again." She said in a dark tone, then in a much lighter tone "No pressure! Bye!" She hopped on her staff and flew off as Luz waved goodbye, a nervous laugh then a sigh leaving her nervous body.
"I am so screwed, if she finds out."
