Smack just like That!

The little cupid called Sweetheart was hovering over Brent. It was almost time, and she was getting so excited. Today could be the day it finally happens. Gleefully she boasts. "It's so fantabulous when love finds its other half. What would love do without me and my cutie?"

She preens herself briefly in the reflective glass of the building and smiles, smoothing her corn silk-colored hair. She proudly tells her reflection, "You got it, girl! Bring love together!" She turns back to her charge, Brent, and smiles. "Today, you will run smack into the love of a lifetime."

Walking with his hands shoved in the pockets of his overcoat, Brent isn't paying attention to where he's going. He doesn't need to. His feet could take him to work without conscious thought from him. Instead, his mind is on her, the one he meant to marry.

"How could I have been so wrong about her?" He mumbles before drinking coffee from what his friends call his adult sippy cup. It steams up his glasses, and he almost trips on a manhole cover as he crosses the street to his office building.

"Dammit! I almost lost my coffee. Can't have a good day without coffee."

A man close in passing laughs, saying. "The best part of getting up in the morning."

He salutes Brent as they part ways on the sidewalk. "See you at lunch, Eric!" Brent calls out and continues as he closes the distance of 50 feet from the entrance to work.

He always walks at a fast clip, and today was no exception. The closer he got to work, the more he hated wearing his glasses, but his eyes were too irritated from staying up last night, unable to sleep. His eyes felt so dry this morning that he knew better than to wear his contacts.

Cutie can see Sweetheart now, and they wave, smiling at each other, drawing their bows.

He calls out to her, "You ready, my love?"

"Yes, Sweet cheeks, I'm ready! Are you?" She holds her bow steady as she aims for Brent.

Cutie grins, steading his bow at Joy. "Yes!"

She says, "On my mark, first mark now!" they both send an undeniable urge to sip coffee to Brent and Joy.

Brent sighed, longing to take a nice sip of coffee before entering the building and heading to all the work he knew was waiting on his desk.

Joy can't wait another minute; she has to have a drink of her coffee. Less than 50 feet from the entrance to her office building, she gives in to the craving and takes a sip of her coffee.

They both lift their cups to their lips. Joy's glasses slip down on her nose as the coffee cup reaches her lips and fogs her glasses.

Brent tips his adult sippy cup of coffee to his mouth when the heat steams up his glasses.

"NOW!" yells Sweetheart, and they release their arrows. Hers is targeting Brent, and his is targeting Joy.

"Oomph!" "Oof!" They both smack right into each other in front of the entrance to the building they work in.

Joy's reading glasses, already halfway down her nose, fly off, landing on the sidewalk along with her to go cup of coffee.

Brent's glasses hang lopsided on his nose and cheek, and he loses his grip on his coffee sippy cup as it drops from his hand.

Sweetheart and Cutie rush to each other and exchange high fives. They burst out laughing at the sound of the smack of their hands.

Sweetheart cheers, "And smack just like that! I told you, sometimes it just takes a good smack!"

"You are right as always, Sweetheart." He smiles adoringly at his love.

Congratulating themselves on a job well done, they watch Brent and Joy recover from the collision. Cutie gets a call. Yes, even cupids have phones these days.

He looks at his phone and then at Sweetheart. "It's the boss! I think we are in trouble!"

She gasps. "He never calls. He always has lower-level cupid do his calling. Oh, my dear one, I think we really are in trouble this time."

They rush off to meet with the top arrow, the boss, and the legend himself . . . Cupid!
