CHAPTER 12 - Jared Francis Overland
Jack's voice cracked as he asked her again. "My brother?"
[Jack's flashback]
Jared Francis Overland, he was Jack's older brother. He was his best friend. They were so close, until one summer day; Jared shut Jack out.
The sad part was...he never really knew why.
Years past, and Jared is already on 5th grade, while Jack is on 3rd grade. They go to school together, but it wasn't like before, they would never talk. They just go for silent walking.
Jared's walls were up and Jack wanted to break them down, or just get through, but he failed.
Until one day...
He just found his brother on his bedroom.
With his neck hanging on the rope.
[Elsa's flashback]
They met on the playground one rainy day. Jared was crying silently, not noticing that Elsa shared her umbrella with him, she offered him her handkerchief. And he muttered thanks to her.
She asked him why he was crying, and there he told her everything, he was adopted, he wasn't a real Overland at all, and all his classmates were laughing at him, saying that he's illegitimate. He felt depressed and Elsa felt sorry for him. She tried to comfort him but then he just simply walked away from her.
The next day, Elsa kept following Jared, until he became annoyed and confronted her, she said that she only wanted to be friends with him, he immediately felt sorry for shouting at her, she accepted the apology and then there they started their friendship.
Even on third grade, Elsa was tough; she even punched one student once when he teased her that she's hanging out with an illegitimate son. Elsa stood up for him, defended him. She did everything to protect him.
Jared felt self with Elsa, though he was older than her, it felt like he was younger, not just younger, but smaller...he felt useless, he felt nothing. He felt nothing without Elsa. He told her that.
But Jared became more depressed. One day, he told Elsa that he doesn't need her anymore, because he is in fact older than her, he doesn't want to be around with her since he doesn't want to feel smaller and he doesn't want to feel useless, he said that their friendship is over. Elsa was hurt, so she cried and walked away from him.
Weeks passed since Elsa hasn't heard anything from Jared. Until one Thursday, she just heard from one of Jared's classmate that he's already dead.
Elsa immediately rushed to Jared's address, and there she saw Jared's lifeless body being carried to an ambulance, she covered her mouth in shock and tears stared to roll down her face.
After Jared's funeral, it was an examination, though Elsa doesn't want to study at all, she decided to open her notebook with snowflake designs on the cover. And there she saw a small piece of folded paper, she furrowed her eyebrows, she doesn't remember putting this on her notebook.
But then she remembered that Jared borrowed this notebook before he ended their friendship.
She decided to open the folded paper and read it.
Dear Elsa,
I'm sorry if I ended up our friendship just like that. No, everything I said wasn't true. I needed you Elsa, you were my only friend, and you were the one who stood up for me. But then, I just couldn't take it anymore. I'm sorry if I'm not strong enough to hold on much longer, I wish I could just be as strong as you but I'm not Elsa...and I'm so sorry.
If you read this, I'm probably gone already. But please, I ask you one last favor, as a friend - As a best friend. I beg you, please tell my younger brother that I love him, and I'm sorry that I shut him out, it was for the best. I didn't want him to know what depression I was going through, I didn't want him to suffer with me. I just want him to enjoy his life.
Please, promise me that you will watch over him, for me. Jack's mom is working in New York, and his dad left us long time ago. So it's just him and our younger sister; Emma. Please Elsa, I keep saying this over and over again. Watch over them for me.
You gotta promise me that.
And I'm sorry if we haven't had the chance to say goodbye to each other.
I love you, Elsa. Goodbye.
-Jared.
