"Have a great day school!"
"Bye mummy!" Danny jumped up excitedly and ran out the door.
"See you later, mum," Jane turned around to leave when she stopped her.
"Jane," she started. "What happened yesterday? Was it something at school?"
Jane tensed up. What should I tell her? She faced her mother. "I just felt really sick and I was really stressed out," she lied. "I had loads of homework. I think I just needed some rest. I'm...sorry for snapping at you."
"Oh, it's alright, dear. And it seems like you did need rest," she laughed. "I went to go check on you when dinner was ready and you were asleep."
"Yep, I was pretty tired." And she was still tired. No thanks to the unexpected visit she received early that morning. The only way she knew she hadn't been dreaming was because she only got five hours of sleep and felt it right now.
Jane thought about telling her mother about him coming back, but she decided not to. She figured it would upset her because he never came back for her.
"Are you sure you feel good enough to go today?" Wendy asked.
"I'm sure." She put on her best smile.
"Alright, then have a good day."
"Bye," she said again, walking out the door this time. Her smile fell the moment it shut. she wondered if Mia was waiting for her around the block. She wasn't going to meet up with her today though.
Jane turned the other way and headed to school by herself.
She managed to avoid her friends for the first half of the day. But when lunchtime came around, she saw them. Isabell and Mia were seated at their usual spot and they didn't seem to be looking for her. They were laughing about something, actually. Jane couldn't let them see her so she quickly went into the restroom. It was convenient because she wasn't that hungry anyways.
If I went out there, she thought. Everyone would make fun of me. She let out a shaky breath and bit her bottom lip hard to keep from crying. Why did I ever like Elliot?
**
Jane had a headache. Maybe it was all the homework she was given. Maybe it was the fact that she got almost no sleep last night. Or maybe it was because she didn't eat lunch today. Probably all three.
She bit her nails as she struggled to understand a math problem. But her headache was getting in the way. I'll just take a break, she thought, closing her textbook.
The knock on the window nearly made her fall out of her bed. Her eyes widened when she saw Peter Pan waving at her. She rolled her eyes and walked up to the window and opened it.
"Hey Jane," Peter smiled, inviting himself in.
"What are you doing back here?" She asked. "You know you just came here yesterday, right?"
"Yeah," he flew onto his back. "But I'm bored."
"Oh?" Jane smirked, crossing her arms. "I thought Neverland was supposed to be fun."
"Eh," he shrugged. "Its kinda boring now. I've already played pranks on jay about everyone there."
"What about Captain Hook? You never seem to get tired of messing with him."
"I know. I don't know what's wrong with me," Peter said. "I get the same reaction from him every time. It's getting old."
"Hmm..." she pursed her lips. "Where's Tinkerbell?"
"She didn't wanna come with me this time. She's busy with something else."
"What about treasure hunt?"
"That game is boring when you play it with the same people all the time." He landed on her bed and remained on his back.
Jane squinted and noticed he looked a tad bit different. Maybe a little...older? "Peter," she began. "You look...well, you look a little bit older than you did yesterday."
He bolted straight up. "What?!" He touched his face. "I don't feel older! Do I look like an old person?!"
"No," she laughed. "You look like you're...my age now."
"Is that a bad thing?"
"It's only a couple years older. I wouldn't think so. Here, get up. You can see for yourself in the mirror."
Peter stood up and gasped when he looked at himself. "I'm a little taller too. I think."
Jane stood closer to him to compare their heights. "Yeah, you are. You don't look that much different though."
"But why do I look older?"
"I don't know? Maybe because you were here for a while last night?"
"No, that can't be it. I've been here before for that long and nothing happened. But hey," he smirked when he noticed his arms. "Oh the bright side, my muscles are a little bigger." He flexed them a few times.
"Ugh," Jane rolled her eyes. "Maybe your ego grew too."
"I do look handsome though." He turned to look at his jawline.
"Ha, that's the funniest thing I've heard all day."
"What? It's true. You know you agree, Jane," he teased.
Jane choked on air. "Wh-what?" Her cheeks turned a light shade of pink. "As if!" Peter then walked away from the mirror and changed the subject.
"But seriously, I wonder why I look older?"
"If its any consolation, you certainly don't act any older."
"Hey!"
"I think that was supposed to be a compliment, Peter."
"Oh, he he," he awkwardly scratched the back of his head. "Right." He flew back to Jane's bed and sat crisscross. "So what do you guys do on the Mainland besides go to school?"
"We work."
"That sounds so boring."
"We also have fun too," Jane said. "Just whenever we get breaks."
"Breaks? In Neverland, you always have a break!"
"Maybe that's why it's so boring then?"
He grabbed his chin in thought. "Nah, it's not that..."
"It is," she argued. "When you have breaks, you have something to look forward to."
"But then you guys also have something to look backward to. Doing boring stuff like going to school and work."
Jane couldn't help but laugh. "Looking backward to? I never heard that one before." She caught her breath. "Oh Peter, you really are creative."
"Wait," he began. "That's not the expression?"
"No," she shook her head with an amused smile across her lips. "You just say that you're not looking forward to it."
"I'm still gonna use mine. It's more fun."
Peter looked at Jane's backpack. "Is that for school?"
"Yes," she nodded. "This is where we put our school supplies."
"School supplies? Is it kind of like pixie dust? You always have to have it or you can't fly? Cause Tink has all these little bags of it in her room."
"Well...I suppose it's like that. You do needs pencil to write with and a notebook to write on."
"Oh," Peter replied flatly. "Do you have anything fun in there?" He quickly got up and began to unzip her backpack.
"Peter, don't-ugh..." she sighed in defeat. "Fine. Rummage through it all you want. But you're not going to find anything you like-"
"Hmm...health? What is this about-?"
"No!" She said a bit too loudly. She grabbed the textbook from his hands. "That's...nothing you need to read. It will be really boring."
"Well how do I know unless I read it?"
"You don't read it. It's nothing important."
Peter squinted his eyes, then shrugged and continued to go through her things. He grabbed her notebook once he found it and took the pencil that was already on her nightstand. "I'm gonna write you a message."
"Please don't waste paper," Jane said.
"It'll only be one sentence," he told her as he flipped through her notes and made it to an empty page. "I'm gonna write it right here." He pointed to the top line.
"Fine. Go ahead." Jane would never admit it, but she was curious as to what he would write. She was surprised he even knew how to write. She tried to peak at it but he pulled the notebook away and told her it was a surprise. Once he was finished, he handed her the notebook.
I miss you :)
Jane blinked. "Peter, you're with me right now."
"I know, I just wrote it for whenever I'm gone and you feel lonely, which will be all the time because everyone's lonely without me."
Ignoring his attempt at boasting, she smiled. "I doubt looking at a note will make me any less lonely. But I'll try it."
"It will. Trust me."
She opened her mouth to respond when her mother called her downstairs for dinner. She looked at Peter. "I've gotta go. I...guess I'll see you around?"
"Yeah. I may or may not come back tomorrow," he said with a wink. Jane giggled.
"Alright. Bye Peter!"
"Bye Jane!" He ran towards the window and did a front flip in the air.
"Show off!" She called playfully.
"You're only saying that because you wish you could do that...!" His voice faded away as he flew higher. Jane scoffed. Next time, I'll get the last word. She headed downstairs.
