"How was your day?" Wendy asked Jane whenever she came home from school.
Horrid, she thought. Absolutely horrid. "It was fine. I have lots of homework though."
"Alright, I'll call you down when supper's ready. I'm fixing spaghetti tonight."
She nodded and headed upstairs to her room. She shut and locked the door before Danny noticed she was there so he wouldn't bother her.
The first assignment she had was from geometry. Find the angle. It was a piece of cake for her but it was boring. She wanted something more challenging.
Jane was able to finish within less than 15 minutes. Next up was health class: The Reproductive System. She was having a test over it next Monday and everyone had been given different worksheets to do everyday leading up to the test. Honestly, this subject was boring for her too. She had already learned the basics back when she was around 12-13 years old. Besides, school never taught sex education the right way. The textbook had more answers than the teacher. But that wasn't saying much.
Suddenly there was a loud knock on her door. Her face fell flat once she realized who it was. "No, Danny. You can't come in. I'm studying!"
"You're so boring!" He yelled back.
"Well by boring I hope you mean getting good grades!"
"Aw, please let me in? I want to play pirates! Rrrr!" He knocked on her door again.
"Daniel!" She took her tissue box and threw it at the door. "I said no."
He knocked a few more times before finally giving up and leaving. My goodness! Jane scowled. He seriously needs to have something to do after school.
A couple hours later, supper was on the table. Jane came downstairs whenever her mother called her and took her spot at the dinning table.
"Hi dad," she smiled when she saw that he was home.
"Hey Jane. How was your day?"
"It was good. I had a ton of homework but I finished it."
"And it took her two hours," Danny added. "She's so slow."
"I am not. Try taking my classes and we'll see who's slow."
"No one's slow," Edward chuckled. "You two are very smart children. You got it from your mother."
"Oh please, Edward," Wendy giggled when she sat down with her bowl of noodles. "You're plenty smart."
"Yes, but who was on the honor role every year for four years in a row?"
"Stop it." She continued to laugh as he kissed her cheek.
"Bleh," Danny pretended to throw up. That only made them want to kiss more. "Mummy, daddy, stop it!" He squealed.
"Get used to it, Daniel," his father smiled. "This is what you'll be doing once you get married."
"I don't wanna get married," he replied. "That's for boring old grownups."
"You will be a grownup one day," said Wendy. "Enjoy it while you're young."
Jane twisted her spaghetti around her fork as she listened to the conversation. I'm never going to get married, she thought.
"Girls have cooties," Danny said.
"You don't think that for long," his mother giggled.
"Tell you what," Edward started. "One day, you'll find a girl. And you'll think she's the most beautiful girl in the world. You wouldn't want to share her with anyone else and you'll want to kiss her." He gave Wendy another playful peck on the cheek.
Danny covered his eyes. "Noooooo! I told you guys to stop! I won't find a girl!"
Jane rolled her eyes. "You will, get over it."
"Jane," Wendy scolded. "We know you're upset about what happened at your birthday, but you shouldn't take it out on your brother that way.
She gritted her teeth and took another bite out of her spaghetti before she could say anything that would get her in trouble. Edward gave his daughter a concerned look before focusing back on Danny.
"So how was your day, Captain Danny?" He teased.
"It was great!" He exclaimed. "And guess what? We had tryouts for the school play coming this Winter!"
Wendy gasped. "Oh my goodness! You get to be in a school play this year? Edward, our son is going to be in his first school play!"
"It was just tryouts, mum," he reminded.
"Well what is the play? Who did you try out for?"
"We're doing Peter Pan this year. I'm trying out for him."
Edward raised an eyebrow. "...Peter Pan? Aren't those the stories you used to tell them when they were kids, Wendy?"
"Yes," his wife nodded. "Peter Pan?" She mouthed to Danny. "When did he become so...popular?"
"Everyone knows those stories, mummy," he answered. You know how Uncle John and Uncle Michael knew about that day?"
"What day?" Edward wondered aloud.
"Oh, he's talking about the day I told them the stories," Wendy fibbed.
"And you know how Uncle Michael is the music teacher?"
Wendy's eyes widened. "Oh my! Yes! So he's passing them along?"
"Mmm hmm," Danny nodded with food in his mouth. "He says the play's going to be about when Peter and the Lost Boys stole Captain Hook's treasure."
"That one's my favorite. I think it was Michael's as well." She laughed. "I guess that explains it then."
"Yeah! You used to tell us that story all the time! Remember, Jane?"
"How could I forget?" She smiled halfheartedly.
"You never talk about it anymore."
"I have more important things to think about, Daniel."
"Like crying over Elliot?" He mocked her with a puppy face.
"Oh, shut up!"
"Jane!" Wendy yelled.
"What?!" She stood up from the table. "Danny can say whatever the bloody hell he wants to me but when I say something I get in trouble!"
"Alright, first of all, watch your language. Secondly, I was going to get on to Danny for teasing you."
"Teasing me? He's doing much more than just teasing me!" She angrily crossed her arms. "He doesn't even understand what happened. None of you do!" She turned around sharply to go upstairs.
"Jane-!" Edward got up, but Wendy stopped him.
"It's alright, dear," she said. "I've already spoken to Jane about this. She just needs some time. And Daniel," she gave the little boy a stern look. "You know not to bother your sister with something she's upset about."
Danny hung his head. "Yes, mummy."
Jane slammed her door so hard that she almost thought it fell off. She sighed in relief when she realized it was still in place. She noticed Nana II waking up from her nap on her bed.
"I don't get it," she started, heading to her closet and grabbing her pjs. "I don't get why Danny gets all the excuses in the world to act the way he does." The dog cocked her head to the side. "Well yeah, I know he's only 9, but he should know between right and wrong by now."
Jane huffed and sat down next to Nana II on the bedside. "You understand me, right?" She scratched behind the dog's ears. The animal flipped over on her back and laid with her head off the bed. Jane sighed. "I guess not. You're just a dog, after all." She got up and headed for the shower.
