Jane never came back downstairs. Even after everyone left the party. The only ones left were Mia, Isabell, and Ben.

"Have you all seen Jane?" Wendy asked as she began washing the dishes.

"Uh..." Ben started. "I think she went to go get something in her room. We'll go check."

"Alright," she said.

Mia knocked once. Twice. Three times. "Jane?" No answer. She sighed. "Jane, we know you're in there. I think you've already gotten enough alone time." She waited another minute. When she didn't answer again, she opened her bedroom door.

They found Jane laying in her bed with the blankets covering her. "Oh Janie..." Isabell sang. "We know you're awake. You can't hide from us forever." She poked the blanket. No movement.

"I know what to do." Mia tore the sheets off her body. Jane immediately got up and tried to pull them back over her head when Mia fought her for them.

"Mia, stop," she whined. "I want to sleep!"

"Sleeping? At your own birthday party?" She laughed. "That's new. What happened?"

"It's nothing," Jane lied.

"Were not leaving until you tell us."

"Then it looks like you guys are stuck here." She tucked her hair behind her ear, exposing her tearstained face.

Isabell gasped. "Could it have possibly had something to do with Elliot?"

Jane hesitated. "No."

"You're a terrible liar," Mia said.

"Ok, so what if it was about Elliot?"

"What do you mean so what?" Said Ben. "He's been your obsession since last year. All you do is talk about him."

"He rejected me, ok?!" She cried. "He told me I wasn't his type and that I meant nothing to him! There! Is that what you wanted to hear?!"

"Wait, he really said that?" Isabell asked. Jane nodded.

"Man, I wish you would've told us earlier. We're gonna have to kick his arse," Mia retorted. "No one messes with my best friend!"

"You got that right!" Isabell and Ben nodded.

"Guys," Jane groaned. "No. It will only make things worse."

"Yeah, for him. Not for you. You can laugh in his face."

"That's not what I want to do." She hugged her knees.

"Um, excuse me? What happened to the Jane I know? She was never afraid to kick arse."

"Well, she's gone. And I don't want to hurt Elliot."

"How can you still be in love with him after what he did to you?" Ben asked in disbelief.

"Because..." she breathed. "That's not how life works. You can't just get over someone you've had a crush on for a year just like that. And just because he hurt me doesn't mean I have to do it back."

"That's lame," Mia said. "He's got to be taught a lesson. What if he starts doing that to other girls?"

"I think it's just me," said Jane.

"And why in Neverland would you think that?" Ben asked again.

"I told you to stop with the references!" Mia hit him in the arm.

"Ow! Hey, I'm just trying to cheer her up!"

"By telling her fake stories? Yeah, cause that'll help so much!"

Jane flopped back onto her pillow. "I think it's just me because he started flirting with Julia right after he told me that he wouldn't go out with me because we just met. Is that enough evidence for you?"

"Why would he do that?" Isabell squinted in thought.

"Cause he's a douchebag, that's why," Mia stated.

"Can you guys just leave me alone?" Jane pouted.

Her friends shared a few glances, then they all nodded. "Yeah. But I expect you to show up at school on Monday," said Mia. "If not, I'm skipping and visiting you."

Jane rolled her eyes. "I'll come to school on Monday, alright? I jus need to be alone for a while."

"Ok," she replied quietly. "Come on guys." They all walked out the door.

"Is she up there?" Wendy asked them.

"Yeah," was all they said.

"We've gotta go though. Our...parents want us home at this time," Ben fibbed.

"Very well. Thank you all for coming," she smiled. "I'll see you soon."

"Thank you, Mrs. Darling," Isabell said with a small wave before heading out the door. Wendy furrowed her eyebrows. She wondered if her daughter was ok. Her friends didn't mention that.

She finished with the dishes and wiped the counters when Edward arrived. "Hello my beautiful wife," he teased. He gave her a small peck on the cheek.

"Hello Edward," Wendy smiled.

"How was the party?"

"It was fun. We have some leftover cake if you want any."

"Daddy!" Danny came running downstairs with a sword still in his hand. He pretended to stab him in the side and Edward played along.

"Ahhh! Help!" He pretended to fall over before catching himself. "I'm afraid I have no gold for you, Captain."

"Or do you?" He squinted.

"Say? Where's the your sister?" He asked.

"Jane? I don't know. I thought she was down here."

"She's up in her room," Wendy answered. "Her fiends went up there but she never came down. I'll have to go check on her. She may be asleep."

"Ah, teenagers. I remember the days."

Wendy knocked on her daughter's bedroom door. "Jane? Could you please open up?" She must be asleep, she thought, cracking the door open. She saw Jane quickly turn to face the other side.

"Go away, mum," she said.

"I'm only trying to help," she replied gently. "Is there something wrong?"

"I don't need help."

"At least tell me what's going on? Did somebody say something to you?" This words alone brought her tears back.

"N-no," she sniffled.

Wendy sat down on her bedside. "Who was it? Is it that boy you like?"

Jane paused before speaking again. "...Yeah."

"Oh dear, what did he say?"

"H-he doesn't like me, mum!" She cried. "He told me that I wasn't his type! He was angry! He flirted with Julia right after he talked to me! He hates me!"

Wendy frowned and placed a hand on her daughter's back and rubbed it soothingly as she sobbed. "Why would he say that, dear?"

"I-I tried to...kiss him. I thought he liked me! He told me that he couldn't possibly like me because just met. But he made a move on Julia! It's not fair! I risked everything for him! I changed my interests to match his!"

"Jane," her mother began. "If there's anything I learned, never change yourself for a boy. It's really not worth it. Boys like him aren't worth all your tears." She kissed her forehead. "I used to feel the same way. Every boy I met I high school would reject me or they already had a girlfriend. I thought I would never find someone until I met your dad. That was at University."

"H-How did you know he was the one?" Jane asked. "Because apparently I'm really bad at being able to tell."

"That's because you're only 16, sweetheart," Wendy chuckled lightly. "This is all apart of growing up and discovering yourself."

"Well if this is what it's gonna be like, I don't want to grow up."

"Jane, it takes time and patience to find the one you love and the one who loves back just as much. Someone who truly loves you won't want you to change for them."

Jane understood what her mother was saying, but she just didn't want to wait that long, for she feared that no one would ever love her. She shivered when she pictured herself in their thirties with no one by her side. And then her forties, fifties, sixties, seventies, and then...dying while still feeling alone.

"I'm tried," she told her mother.

"Alright," Wendy still looked concerned. "Come downstairs if you need me or your father." Jane nodded.

Once she left, Jane stared up at the ceiling, thinking about how much time she had wasted on Elliot the past year. Her thoughts were always filled with him in her everyday life. And she included him in almost every conversation with her friends. She was surprised they never got tired of hearing his name. Well, maybe they did but just didn't say anything.

She remembered all her dreams about him where he told her that he loved her and kissed her. She enjoyed the feeling of his lips on her's. And the sound of his voice was flawless. But now it was far from that. "You're not special to me, Jane..." "We Just met today."

But I feel like I've known you for a thousand years.

That's what she wanted to say, but that would've probably made her sound like some creep. He already thought bad enough about her already.

Jane turned over to her side and noticed the scarf he gave her, laying on her nightstand over the picture of her, Danny, and her parents. She carefully lifted it off and stared at it. Although she just received it today, there were so many memories within it. Even if it was only hours of them.

Jane had never felt so comfortable talking to someone from her school in her life. He was so easy to get along with. And the way he smiled at her...she could've sworn he felt the same way. Was he stringing her along?

The very thought of it broke her heart even more. Was he only pretending to like me just so he could get laugh out of it? She squeezed the scarf in her hands, just wanting to rip it apart. If only I could set it on fire. She knew it wouldn't make her feel any better. The pain wasn't in the scarf.

It wasn't fair. Mia and Isabell had boyfriends. She even knew someone who liked Ben. But did anyone like her? No. Of course no boy would ever like me. I'm so ugly and awkward. I don't have long hair, I don't like dresses or high heels, I don't wear a lot of makeup, I don't drink or smoke. I can't even afford to buy all my clothes. I'm so worthless.

She got out of bed and looked at herself in the mirror. She hated the way her hair was cut. Mia and Isabell both had long, curly hair that reached past their shoulder blades. Her hair was barely touching her shoulders. And she hated how long her arms were compared to her legs. Every other girl at her school had arms that were the perfect length. And they also had small feet. Jane wore a size 8 while the other girls wore a size 4-6 at the most.

Jane threw the scarf to the ground. Elliot was right. I'm nothing special. Boys don't fall in love girls like me.
