Jane almost left the house in her pajamas the next morning. It was a good thing Wendy was there.
"Did you not sleep well?" She asked.
"No," her daughter sighed. "I wasn't tired after that stupid nightmare."
Wendy frowned. "Well, maybe you'll get a better sleep tonight."
I can only hope, she thought as she went back upstairs to get dressed for the day. Danny was still laughing about the fact that she almost went out the door without actual clothes on. "Hey Jane!" He called to her before she reached her bedroom. "Make sure to put your socks on before your shoes!"
"Oh shut up!" She yelled back.
"That's enough, you too," their mother scolded.
Jane shook her head and shut her door.

"Jane, are you feeling well?" Mia asked her once they met up to walk to school.
"Yeah, I'm just exhausted. I...was up doing last-minute homework."
"Oh," she grimaced. "That sucks."
"Yeah."
"Will you be awake enough to hang out with Isabell and I tonight?"
Jane raised an eyebrow. "What?"
"We kind of made plans yesterday. That's why I asked if you could come over," she replied.
"You...asked me if I could come over?"
"Christ, Jane. How bloody tired are you?" Mia laughed. "I asked you and you said you couldn't because you had too much homework. That explains why you were up so late last night."
"Oh...yes, I remember now." The truth was, she had already finished her homework on Friday a couple hours before she had to pass out candy. She would've hung out with Mia and Isabell yesterday, but she was waiting for Peter to come over. She didn't want to lie to her friends, but it's not like she had a choice. They wouldn't believe her. She could only imagine their reactions. "I'm dating Peter Pan." "Yeah right. You're so funny, Jane."
"...ane?"
"Peter Pan doesn't even exist-"
"Jane?!"
She blinked when she noticed someone's hand waving in front of her face. She furrowed her eyebrows and saw that it was Isabell. "...When did you get here?"
"Um..." she gave Mia a glance. "We're in the hallway by my locker."
"She's tired. Really tired."
When the first bell rang, they all went their separate ways. Jane slumped down in her desk in first hour. History was by far the most boring class. Not because of the class itself, but because the teacher's voice was so monotone that she almost sounded like a robot.
"She looks tired," she heard one of her classmates whisper from a couple desks behind her.
"I wonder if her and Elliot hooked up again?" Another said.
"Nah. Elliot's moved on from that skank."
Jane probably would have cared a little more if she wasn't about to fall asleep at her desk. And even if she wasn't tired, it wouldn't have mattered what they said. They could call her any name they wanted or say that she slept with any guy. All she had to do was think about Peter. Unlike most people, he knew the real her. He knew what made her laugh. He knew how to make her smile when she was feeling down. He always knew exactly what to tell her without even trying. He had something that none of the boys at school had.
Her eyelids began to close and she lowered her head onto the desk. This is the perfect time for sleeping.
WHACK!
The sound of a ruler hitting her desk jumpstarted her heart. She sat upright, blinking a few times to get her vision back in focus.
"Ms. Darling," the teacher said firmly. "This isn't the time for dozing off. It's the time to learn. If you have a problem with that, then I suggest you leave the classroom." There were a few giggles from her peers.
Jane rolled her eyes. What buffoons. It's not like they've never fallen asleep in class before.
She barely made it through the day before coming home and falling onto her bed. Nice, cozy, warm, relaxing...she hummed in contentment. Yes, she had homework, but that could be done later. Right now, all she needed was to sleep. Just for a little while.
Jane didn't know how long she'd been asleep, but it was night when she woke up. There was loud knocking at her window. She groaned and forced herself out of bed. She opened the window and let Peter in.
"Why were you sleeping?" He chuckled, jumping over the windowsill. "It's not even all the way dark yet."
Jane yawned. "I hardly got any sleep last night, that's why." She rubbed her eyes and smiled at him. "I'm glad you're here." She really was. The thought of him hurt did cross her mind a couple times at school. A dream had never affected her that much before.
Jane brought them food from downstairs again. Wendy noticed but didn't comment on it this time. She knew for a fact that she ate breakfast this morning. Is she not eating at school?
"So anyways, the Lost Boys were running like crazy. They kept calling for Tink to give them pixie dust but she was with me the whole time."
"Peter, that is so wrong and you know it!" Jane lightly punched him in the arm.
"Ha! You thought that was bad? You should've seen the time I pranked Hook!"
Hook. Jane frowned, remembering her nightmare. She had actually managed to forget about it whenever Peter was telling her stories. She should've known that the pirate would show up sooner or later.
"What's wrong?" Peter asked.
"It's...it's nothing."
He moved closer to her. "I know you're lying."
"Well yeah, obviously," she rolled her eyes. "It's just something I remembered, that's all. Nothing you need to know."
"It's making you sad though. Please tell me, Jane?" He begged like a little kid.
She sent him a small glare before sighing and giving in. "I...I had a nightmare..." she looked away once she said it.
"A...nightmare?"
Jane's eyes widened. "You don't know what a nightmare is?" He shook his head. "Um...have you ever had a dream?"
"Yeah," he replied. "I always have the best dreams!"
Well that explains it. "Well, a nightmare is a bad dream."
"You guys have bad dreams on the Mainland? I've heard of those but we never get them in Neverland. We're always thinking happy thoughts."
"I wish it was that simple," she said.
"...What happened?"
Jane shyly tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. "I had a dream that...C-Captain Hook..." her voice trailed off as she tried to hold back her tears. She still saw everything so clearly. The hook stabbing through Peter, him falling on the ground, his soft voice. "H-he came into my room when you were there and-and...killed you."
Peter's eyes widened. "Nightmares are that bad?" He murmured. She nodded slowly and pulled her legs up to her chest to hug her knees. "And...you thought it was real?" Another nod. He made a pained face. He felt bad for not being there and could only imagine how she felt. He thought about how he should comfort her. How do people who are dating comfort each other? "Hey," he began, voice cracking a bit. "Don't worry about the old codfish. I'm too quick for him anyways."
Jane found herself smiling a bit, but dark thoughts kept getting in her way. What if he's not quick enough next time? What if-
"Don't worry about me." He smiled warmly at her.
"I won't stop worrying about you," she replied with a smirk, recalling what he had told her just a week ago.
Peter's smile grew. It felt kinda nice that someone cared. Like, really cared. Don't get him wrong, he hated that Jane had a nightmare, but...it was about him. And how she was afraid of losing him. It was different. But a good different.
"Well," he began. "I'm not going anywhere."
Jane blushed. "I hope not," she whispered.
"Hmm..." Peter looked up at the ceiling in thought. Maybe I could get it off her mind. "I can tell you more stories about me and the Lost Boys. And don't worry. Plenty of them don't involve Hook."
She glanced at him as if she wanted to say something else, but nodded. "Alright."
Peter told her stories until he heard her let out a tiny yawn. "Are you tired?"
Jane yawned again. "Yeah..." She got in bed- not caring that she was still in her regular clothes- and pulled the covers over herself.
"Alright." He got up and walked to her bedside. "Goodnight, Jane."
"Goodnight."
Her heart broke when she saw him turn to leave. What if the same thing happens tonight? What if it's worse? She grabbed his hand and pulled him back a little. "W-wait!" She stuttered. "Could you maybe...stay? I-I won't be able to sleep without you tonight. Not after my nightmare."
Peter's face was bright red. "Like...sleep in the same bed with you?"
"Um...well, you don't have to. But I don't think the floor will be very comfortable," she laughed nervously.
"Uh...o-ok."
Jane scooted over to make roll for him and he got on the bed as if it were the most fragile thing in the world and could break at any second. They both laid on their backs, staring up at the ceiling.
Peter accidentally brushed his leg against hers and she immediately pulled it away, remaining stiff as a board.
Soon enough, Jane fell asleep and Peter dozed off for a while as well. He then woke in the middle of the night and decided it was best that he left. Jane didn't seem too comfortable with him being there, even if she asked him to. Are couples to sleep a certain way? Is that why she was uncomfortable? Did I do something wrong? So many questions filled his mind.
He tiptoed out of her bedroom, not wanting to wake her up. He was thankful that the window was still open so he wouldn't have to open it again and make more noise. Before flying off, he turned back at looked at Jane. He couldn't help but admire the way she looked in her sleep. Something about the way her chest slowly rose up and down and the way her lips were parted slightly.
"Goodnight," he whispered.
