"Ok, so first thing's first," Jane started. "I'm going to have to put up a few boundaries." Her and Peter were sitting across from each other on her bed. "If we go out somewhere, I have to be home by 22:00 (10:00pm). My mum usually comes up to my room to say goodnight at that time. If you still want to talk, that's fine. Just wait until she's gone."
"So you're not supposed to tell your parents that you're dating someone?" Peter asked.
"Well...usually people do. The only reason I'm not telling them is because I know they won't approve."
"Why not?"
"Because you're not the type of boy my parents expect me to date. They want me to date someone who's...how do I put this nicely? More mature?"
He grimaced. "Why does everyone want everyone to grow up in this place?"
"That's just the way it is," she said.
"Well, it sucks. Can we tell the Lost Boys and Tinkerbell?"
"Sure," Jane said, then smirked. "But...won't Tink be jealous?"
"Eh, she'll get over it." Peter sat on her bed. "And so will the others."
"Oh yes," she playfully rolled her eyes. "All girls get jealous around you."
"You never did."
"I know," Jane smiled proudly. "I'm not usually the jealous type."
"That's why I like you."
She blushed and bit her lip. She didn't understand. He could have any girl in Neverland from Tiger Lily to the mermaids and he chose her. There was nothing special about her. From what she heard from her mother, Tiger Lily was a beautiful Indian Princess and the mermaids were, well...they were mermaids. That alone was cool. But Jane? She was just another ordinary girl.
"I have an idea," Peter started. "How about we go to Neverland on our first date tonight? That way we can both tell everyone!"
"Peter..." she let out a sigh. "I'm not sure if I'm ready to go just yet."
"Why?"
"I just...I want to take things slow. Besides, I have school tomorrow and if I get home late, it won't work out." He frowned a little but nodded in understanding. Jane felt guilty. That wasn't the only reason she didn't want to go to Neverland. Words could not describe how badly she wanted to go back there. It was more like she wasn't allowing herself to. She was afraid that if she went, she would never want to come back. Her friends and family would miss her. She needed to be there for them. But she also needed to be there for Peter.
"Is there anything else you wanna do?" He asked sweetly. She almost gave in. Almost.
"Um...we could always have a picnic? I don't know where though because my parents are home and I would have to make up some excuse..."
Peter gasped. "How about a picnic up there?!" He pointed towards the roof. "We could look at the stars!"
A huge smile appeared on Jane's face. "Yes, that's an excellent idea, Peter. I'll just have to smuggle some food up here. What do you like to eat?"
"Well, in Neverland we eat a lot of fruits. And the fairies will occasionally make me and the Lost Boys some food. You guys have fruits here, right?"
"Yes," she giggled. "Have you ever had fish and chips?"
"Uh...I've had fish before. We actually caught some and cooked it over a fire. But chips? I don't think so."
"Chips are fried potatoes."
"Ohhhh, huh. Sounds interesting."
"You'll have to try some. We have leftovers from lunch. I'll have to heat them up again and I will bring them up here. And how about your drink? Have you had tea?"
"Yes! Tink always brings us this really good kind from Pixie Hallow!"
"That's great! I'll be right back. Please don't make a lot of noise. My brother's room is next door and if he sees you, he won't be able to stop talking."
"Got it!" He saluted.
Jane rolled her eyes before shutting the door and heading downstairs. She opened the refrigerator and pulled out a plate of fish and chips. There were two pieces of fish left and plenty of chips for them to share. She slid the plate into the toaster oven.
Just then, her mother came downstairs. "Jane dear, what is that in the toaster?"
"Fish and chips," she replied. "I figured I might as well finish up the leftovers."
"That's quite a bit of chips," she commented.
"I'm just really hungry."
"...Very well."
Jane waited a few more minutes. Once it was finished, she went upstairs and then came back down to make some tea.
Wendy was seated at the table with her own cup of tea. She couldn't help but notice that her daughter had poured two cups. "Jane, have you eaten breakfast this morning?" She asked.
"Yes. I'm just starving," her daughter said again with more emphasis.
Jane laughed once she shut the door to her bedroom. "My mum thinks I'm some kind of slob now. She saw me getting all this food and these two cups of tea."
Peter laughed with her. "She doesn't suspect a thing, does she?"
"No," she shook her head. Peter carries her up to the roof and brought the food up as well.
It was a fairly chilly night, considering it was November, but it wasn't freezing. "So...how do you like your fish and chips?" She asked.
"They're really good!" He smiled. "Especially the chips. They're so salty!"
"I know. That's what makes them so great."
"Mmhmm," he took another bite. "Do you guys ever eat any pie on the Mainland? Because Tink knows how to make then with her friends and they're filled with berries. Fruit has never tasted so good. We always hav to have a lot of 'em though because of how tiny they are."
"Yes, we have pie shops," she answered. "I'll have to stop by one someday and let you have a taste. They won't be nearly as small as the ones the fairies make."
"Wow, you have giant ones?"
"Well, they're not necessarily giant. They're...a normal size. Human sized."
"The Mainland's not as boring as I thought."
"See? It isn't that bad."
"But," he smirked. "It's still not as good as Neverland. No one flies here." He stood up and flew upside down.
"Not on their own," Jane said. "We have airplanes. Those are machines with wings that fly us to far away places."
"Really? I wanna go on one!"
"Why do that when you can already fly in the easiest way possible?"
"I don't know," he shrugged. "It just sounded fun."
"Well, I'll let you know if I ever get to fly in a plane," she teased.
**
"Goodnight." Jane smiled as Peter got on her windowsill to leave.
He gave her a soft smile in return. "Goodnight, Jane. I had fun."
"Me too."
He started to fly off, when he stopped himself. He turned around and leaned in close to her. "I almost forgot to do this." He kissed her gently on the lips.
Jane laughed against his lips and was left in a daze after they broke apart. She waved to him as he flew further away and absentmindedly sighed. How she wished she could have more time with him.
It was easy to fall asleep that night. But not so easy to stay asleep.
**
Jane woke up to Peter knocking on her window, a worried look on his face. She quickly got up and opened it. "Peter, what's gong on-?"
"I can't tell you!" He replied urgently.
Her heart raced. "What happened?" She grabbed his shoulders. "You can tell me anything-"
"Jane! He's coming!" Peter suddenly yelled.
"What? Who's coming?!"
"No time to explain! Please, just hide!"
"Peter, wait, I-"
"Now!!"
"But what about you-"
"It's too late for me."
Her eyes widened. "W-what?"
"Jane..." he began, but was cut off when a sharp hook impaled him. "Peter!!" She gasped, tears forming in her eyes. "No!!"
He choked and fell to his knees. She immediately ran to his side. "Oh my god..." her voice shook. "What have you done?!!" She screamed bloody murder.
All she could hear was the cruel laughter of none other than Captain James Hook. She didn't dare look him in the eye. She just laid over Peter. "No! Please don't go!" She begged frantically.
"Jane," he whispered, barely able to talk. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry..." and with that, he closed his eyes.
"P-Peter..." her mouth hung wide open. "Peter, no! Please!" She sobbed.
"My dear," Hook began. "You And Peter were never going to work out anyways. And I needed my long awaited revenge."
Jane couldn't breathe. "No..." she wrapped her arms around his now lifeless body. "Peter..." she said over and over again. "Please...you can't be gone. You can't be..."
**
Jane woke up in a cold sweat. She immediately sat up in her bed and looked around for any sign of Peter. Her window was still shut. He wasn't there. Thank goodness. She let out a shaky sigh and the tears caught up with her.
She couldn't control how loud she sobbed. She didn't care. What if all of that had really happened? What would she do then? She recalled when Peter told her that Capitan Hook now had a bigger crew and was planning to get him. And although his previous plans had always failed, she was worried that his next wouldn't. It was just a dream. You're overreacting, she told herself. But she couldn't bring herself to stop crying.
Jane heard somebody open bedroom door. She frantically wiped her tears and quickly pulled the covers over herself to look like she was sleeping.
"...Jane?" Her mother's gentle voice only brought on more tears. She gasped lightly. "Jane, dear. Whatever is the matter?"
Wendy sat down and rubbed her daughter's shoulder comfortingly. "Did you have a nightmare?" She asked. Jane pulled the blankets off her head and slowly nodded. She frowned. Jane rarely ever had nightmares. And even when she did, none of them had ever left her crying like this. "Do you mind telling me what it was about?"
It took her a minute to answer. "I..." She began, her voice hoarse. "I had a dream that...all of you died. I didn't know how or why, but I saw everyone's body just l-laying there." Jane felt absolutely terrible for lying, but they couldn't know about her relationship with Peter.
"Oh, sweetheart." Wendy leaned down to give her a hug and kiss on the forehead. "Don't worry. We're all still here and we're not going anywhere."
"I-I know that," Jane sniffled. "I was just scared."
"Will you be alright to go back to sleep?"
"Yes. I think so. Thanks mum." She faked a smile.
Wendy pulled out of the hug and smiled back. "Just let me know if you need anything."
"I will."
"Goodnight."
"Goodnight."
Once she shut the door, Jane's smile disappeared. She got out of bed and opened the curtains so that she could see the second star. She dug her nails dress nervously. I really hope he's ok.
Now all she wanted to do was see him. She wasn't even tired anymore. Unfortunately, she would have to wait until tomorrow.
