"I'm heading to the library. I'll see you guys tomorrow." Jane waved to Mia and Isabell
"Alright, bye!" They both waved back.
Jane walked to the building that was a block away from the school. The public library was so much better than their school library. It was bigger and it had more selections. And not to mention, the librarians were way nicer and more patient.
She searched the isles for the Health section and looked for the letter S. She still couldn't believe she was doing this. She wondered if Peter would even read the whole book? Well, she figured. He said he found everything boring except for sexual reproduction, so he should be able to finish it.
She was almost embarrassed when she paid for it, although the librarian had no idea who she was renting it for.
"Here's the return stamp," she said, placing a sticker on the back of the book.
"Thank you." Jane took it. She looked at the back of it. November 28th, 1948. He had a month to read it.
Jane didn't tell her mother where she was when she got home. She just told her that the reason she was home a little later was because her and Mia were talking for a while.
She nearly had a heart attack when she opened her bedroom door. Peter was laying in her bed. "What exactly are you doing?" She asked.
"Waiting for you to come home," he replied, sitting up. "You're usually here 30 minutes earlier."
"That's because I had to stop by the library to get you this, remember?" She opened her backpack and pulled out the nearly rented book.
Peter's face lit up. "Awesome!" He took it right out of her hands.
"You have to bring it back by the date on the back," she said. He turned it over and read "November 28th, 1948. I don't know when that is."
"It's this year and it's next month. I'll tell you the day before when you need to bring it back here."
Peter flipped it back over to the cover page. "Sexual reproduction. So...this will explain more about how babies are made?"
"Yes," Jane nodded. I hope I didn't spend my allowance on nothing.
"Hmm..." he flipped to the first page and began reading. Jane was certainly not expecting him to start reading it in her room. She figured she might as well try and finish her homework.
Peter flew onto his back and started reading. She then sat on her bed and got her History textbook out. It wasn't long before he started asking questions.
"Hey Jane?"
"Hmm?"
"Does it hurt when you bleed every month?"
She choked on air. "Wh-what?!"
"You know." He flew over to her. "It says that girls get this thing called their menst-rual cycle?"
"Um...yeah," she laughed uncontrollably. "Sometimes it hurts."
He frowned. "Why does it only happen to girls?"
"Well, it's apart of how they can have babies," she answered. "Keep reading and you'll find out more."
She should've known it was a mistake.
"So girls have eggs? Like bird eggs? Do they lay them."
"Uh...not necessarily."
He flipped to the next page. "And-whoa! The guy has to..." he couldn't finish his sentence before he started blushing. "And it meets the eggs..." he looked up from the book. "Do people only do this when they want a baby?"
"...Not exactly." Jane's cheeks were on fire. "A bunch of people do it for, uh...fun."
"So do they have babies every time? Because that's a lot of babies."
"No," she shook her head. "When people don't want to have a baby, they use protection. Like, um...well, there are these things called condoms. The guy has to wear it over his...you know."
Peter didn't think he could get any redder. Maybe it was time for a break. He shut the book. "I-I think that's enough for right now."
"Yeah," Jane chuckled awkwardly.
He sat down next to her and kicked his feet off the edge of the bed. "So, how's school going? Since, ya know..." he winced. He really didn't want to have to bring it up again but he needed to know. If she was still upset he hoped he could make her feel better.
To his surprise, Jane smiled. "It's actually been so much better recently. It was like-" she cut herself off. It was like after we kissed, everything changed. But she didn't dare say that.
"It was like what?"
"Um..." she tried desperately to come up with something. "It was like things changed overnight." She shyly looked away.
Peter blinked. Things changed overnight...is she talking about the kiss? Is hat when things started to get better? He felt his cheeks grow hot. Was it bad that he really wanted it to happen again?
"See? You don't have to worry about me. I'll be fine. I have good friends who've got my back, and that's all that matters..." He heard her but all he could focus on was the way her lips slightly parted when she spoke. Now all he wanted to do was kiss her again. He was curious. He wanted to experiment more. But he had to stop himself. Something told him that kissing her while she was talking wasn't right. And there was always the possibility that she didn't want to kiss him again. Yes, he had to keep that in mind.
"...I swear, that was insane," she laughed.
Peter noticed that she stopped talking and suddenly felt embarrassed. He quickly looked up at her. "Uh...what was the question?"
"It wasn't a question. I was just-are you even listening?" She crossed her arms.
He shook his head. "Sorry."
She let out a deep sigh. "It's alright. I totally get it if you don't want to hear me talk about my life at school. It can be rather boring after a while I suppose."
"No!" Peter replied almost too quickly. "I mean...keep taking. You're not boring. I like hearing you talk."
Jane had to look away for a moment to control her blush. Does he even know what he's doing to me? She cleared her throat a few times before regaining posture and speaking again. "Ok, um...where was I?"
"You said something about insane," he told her, flipping onto his stomach and resting his chin in his hands.
"Oh, yes. I was talking about the time I was playing red rover on the school playground with all the boys when I was in my third year. I broke someone's arm that day."
"Really?" He chuckled. She nodded. "Remind me to never play with you."
Jane hit him on the shoulder. "It was an accident, mind you."
"Tell me." Peter began, flying across from her upside down. "Do you hurt every guy you meet?"
Jane rolled her eyes, knowing exactly what he was referring to. "I thought you were a pirate."
"...Fair enough. Although I've never met a girl who had the nerve to try and punch Captain Hook."
"Oh, he's no threat," she waved her hand in dismissal.
"Yeah, about that...he may have a bigger crew now."
Jane raised an eyebrow. "How'd he get the numbers?"
Peter shrugged. "I don't know. But I bet he came down to the Mainland and gathered up some men. I keep hearing him and Smee talking about how they're going to get their revenge on me once and for all." He faked a yawn. "Same old boring plan."
She laughed. "You got that right. I wonder if that Codfish will ever get a life."
"As long as he doesn't have one, I have one."
"Oh please. You can't tell me that the only thing you do is fight Captain Hook."
"It's not," he answered. "It just makes up the majority of my fun."
Jane suddenly felt sick. She remembered the story of how he cut off Hook's hand and fed it to a crocodile from her mother. She used to think that the story was funny as a child. Now, it kind of frightened her. She fiddled with her hands nervously as she spoke. "Is...is it true that you, um...cut off his hand and gave it to the crocodile? I- Is that why he has a hook?"
"Yep," Peter replied casually. "He was trying to kill me and the Lost Boys though. He had his hand around cubby's neck and wouldn't let go. I had no choice. He was trying to take everything from us."
Jane blinked, a little overwhelmed. She couldn't even imagine how traumatizing it must've been for all of them. "And...he's wanted revenge ever since?"
"Pretty much."
"I'm sorry, but I can't...wow."
"What?"
"It's just...you cut off someone's hand! How?!"
"Well, I took a sword and-"
"No! I did wanna hear that! I mean...I've heard the stories from my mum. I guess it's just so weird thinking of it. "You're...you don't seem like the type of person who'd do that."
"It was only because I was trying to protect them. Sure I tease him all time, but when he tries to hurt my friends, it's game over."
He's right, Jane decided. If I were in that situation, I'd probably end up doing the same.
"But hey," he softened his voice. "I don't want you to feel like you have to be scared of me because of that. I'd never do something like that to you or anyone else for that matter."
She felt herself relax. Of course she knew Peter would never hurt her. She was just a little disturbed from that backstory. At least until she found out that he had to do it. It was strange, but she admired him even more for that.
"I don't know why he chose the hook to replace his hand though," she stated. "I think it'd be quite painful to clap."
"Yeah," Peter chuckled. "I just think he wanted to look more intimidating."
"And that's working out so perfectly," Jane added sarcastically.
"I know. I'm so scared!" He mocked playfully. "Oh no! A big ugly pirate with a hook! Ahhh!" He fell back on her bed dramatically. "No...please...have mercy on me! Don't stab me with that hook!"
Jane couldn't stop laughing. "You're such a terrible actor!"
"But Jane, I'm not acting! I'm really dying...slowly and painfully! Just end it all right now!"
"Ugh, where's Tinkerbell when I need her?"
"Hey, I'm not that bad," he defended.
"You are."
"Oh yeah? Let's see you act!"
"I never said I could act," she stated.
"I bet you can."
"Fine." She paused to think. "Oh, Peter!" She placed the back of her hand over her forehead. "I'm not sure if I can bear this pain any longer!"
"What pain?" He asked dramatically. "Tell me."
"Oh...I don't know. It's...it's too much!" She fell back into his arms. Not expecting that, he clumsily caught her and her arms went around his neck.
"Jane, y-you must..." He became too flushed to speak. The way she felt in his arms was too good for words. "Y-you have to tell me."
Upon seeing Peter's face, her face turned red. He's so cute when he stammers like that. "I-I...I'm..." He's so adorable. "I'm a terrible actress," she concluded.
With that, Peter pulled her back up, their lips almost touching. "You're not," he whispered, glancing down at her lips.
Jane smiled. "Liar." She removed her hands from his neck and fully sat back up. Peter was rendered speechless. That was so close, he thought. I can't be the only one thinking about this, can I?
Jane didn't know why she did that. It was like she was in a playfully mood one second and felt super venerable and weak the next. She thought about kissing him again whenever he pulled her next to him. She really did. But she was afraid that Peter would be uncomfortable. Just ask him! She told herself. Duh! But something was keeping her from saying anything to him.
