"Um...I like your raincoat."
Jane tried. She really did. But every time she came face to face with Elliot, aka, the cutest guy in school, she always managed to screw things up. He was on the soccer team, played the french horn in band, and he was able to get and maintain straight A's. Not to mention, he was also a senior. Jane had been crushing on him for a year. This was her last chance to tell him how she felt before he left for good. After he went to University, he'd only be interested in University girls. Not secondary school girls.
"Jane!" A sharp voice interrupted her thoughts. She blinked and noticed her friend waving her hand in front of her face.
"Mia, stop," she grabbed her hand. "I'm listening."
"You weren't for the last 45 seconds."
"That's because I was grieving over another pathetic attempt to ask Elliot out."
"Yeah," Mia cringed. "I could see that. It was absolutely pitiful."
"I know," Jane huffed. "I wish I could speak to him as easily as the other girls do."
"Hey, at least you were able to form a coherent sentence."
"He wasn't even wearing a raincoat."
"...Touché."
"But," she clapped her hands together and sighed dreamily. "I pictured him wearing one. It was dark blue like the sky at night. And there were little sparkly stars for the buttons."
Mia gave her friend a strange look. "Ok, you either really need help or you need to make a move."
"And really want to make a move. I'm just so nervous! I have this...this butterfly feeling in my stomach!"
"Probably because it's lunchtime." She took Jane's hand. "Tell you what? We meet up with Isabell and talk about this over ham and cheese sandwiches." Before she could object, Mia dragged her through the hall.
Lunch was the most chaotic part of the day. There was always someone in the cafeteria who just had to start a food fight. Jane and Mia made sure to sit at any table near the corners.
"So," Mia began while placing her lunch out on the table. Jane watched as she placed the sandwich to her left, then her Apple, then her chips (fries). She always had to have her food set out in the order she was going to eat it in. And she always had a knife and fork to her left. "As you hopefully know, your 16th birthday is coming up."
"And what does this have to do with Elliot?"
"Hold on, let me finish." She took a drink from her water bottle. "You're having a party this weekend, right?" Jane nodded. "So invite him over! It's the perfect opportunity to get him alone and-"
"Who whoa whoa," she held her hands out. "I've already invited everyone. I doubt my mum wants more people."
"It's just one more person. I don't see the big deal."
"My mum specifically told me I could only invite four friends. I already have you, Isabell, Johnny, and Ben. Plus my uncles Michael and John will be there with my cousins."
"But it's your 16th birthday. You need to let lose a little. Disobey your parents for once in your life. I'm sure they'll understand."
"Oh yeah?" She smiled. "Like that time you did when you went out to that party last Summer and got wasted?"
"Yes! Exactly! Only there won't be any alcohol at your party," Mia pouted.
Jane crossed her arms. "I told you I don't drink. Besides, if you or Johnny brought any alcohol, my dad would lose it."
"You don't have to worry about me bringing any. Johnny's the alcoholic." They both laughed.
"Hey guys!" Isabell sat down with her lunch tray. "Notice anything different?"
"Uh...your sitting to the right of me instead of the left?" Mia teased.
She scoffed. "No. It's something I'm wearing."
Jane pursed her lips and squinted her eyes in thought. She noticed that her coat had a badge on the left arm. "Is it from the war?" She asked.
Isabell nodded. "When he came home a couple years ago, he told me I could have it whether I turned 16. I think he feared I'd lose it back then. But now I take it wherever I go, whether it's on my coat, my purse, or my hat."
"That's awesome!" Mia exclaimed. "I wish my father had given my something like that. Don't you, Jane?"
"Well, I don't know," said girl replied. "I was just happy to have him back." If she were being honest, that had never crossed her mind. She remembered when they went to school last year, everyone had something to "brag" about from the war. She remembered Ben talking about his older brother letting him have his uniform. He invited her and Johnny over to look at it. Jane didn't understand how they could sit there and pretend the war was some trend. Unlike most of her peers, she didn't want to remember it.
"Ok, anyways, I was just telling Jane that she should invite Elliot to her birthday party this weekend," Mia changed the subject.
Isabell gasped. "You really should! That's the perfect opportunity to tell him how you feel!"
"That's practically what I said!"
"And I said no because first off, I can't talk to him! Secondly, my mum won't allow it!"
"She won't even notice you have one extra friend."
"She will."
"Hey Jane," Johnny walked up to them.
"Hey Johnny," she smiled. "What's up?"
"I just wanted to let you know that I won't be able to make it to your party. Something came up and my mum's in the hospital."
"Oh no, is she ok?"
"That's the thing. We don't know yet. The doctors have done multiple tests and haven't found anything. And I need to be there with her when she does the sleep study this weakened. I'm sorry."
"No, it's fine. I understand. Family first."
"Thanks," he smiled gratefully. "I guess I'll see you around?"
"Yeah, see you around." Jane waved to him and turned back to her friends, who had wide grins on their faces. "How is this funny? His mum could be seriously ill."
"No no no, it's not like that," said Mia. "Now you only have three friends coming. You can invite Elliot!" Isabell squealed with her.
Janes eyes widened and she blushed. "You're right. Oh no! You're right! What am I gonna do?! How am I gonna ask him?!!"
"Let's start by getting yourself together. Then maybe we'll be able to think of an elaborate plan."
"Whatever the plan is, it can't involve any speaking on Jane's part," Isabell stated.
"You could write him a note," Mia suggested.
"You mean like an invitation?"
"Yes! Exactly!"
"Guys," Jane interrupted. "You do realize that we don't have any, right?"
"Hmm...then we'll make one! We all have art class next, don't we?"
"Yes! That's a great idea Mia!" Isabell chirped. "We can make it all colorful and fancy!"
"What if he doesn't like those kinds of things?" Argued Mia. "What if he just wants it plain?"
"This isn't his party, it's Jane's. She can design it however she likes."
"That's true."
Jane looked back and forth from one friend to the other. "I...think that's a good idea. I'll have to slide it in his locker before the end of the day. He always has to grab his Algebra text book before he leaves."
"That's...really creepy," Isabell said.
"I told her she needs to make a move."

"Alright-no, not right there! No-yes! Yes, right there!" Jane whisper-yelled as she and Mia watched Isabell place a golden sticker on the fold of the envelope. While Jane wrote on the card, she had done all the decorating. Jane couldn't design anything to save her life.
"Viola!" Isabell kissed it.
"Alright, don't get too attached now," Mia laughed as Jane grabbed the invitation.
"Now all I need to do is sneak this into his locker after class. Oh, I hope he notices it."
"He definitely will," Isabell reassured. "I've noticed he's very observant."
"Only an observant person would notice another observant person," Mia said.
"What can I say? I have a gift."
Once class was over, Jane quickly made her way to Elliot's locker. Ok, she told herself. Just slide it in his locker. If he comes, stay cool. You can do this. She took a deep breath and walked towards the locker 1304. She lifted the invitation and slid it into one of the tiny slits at the top. I did it. I'm ok.
She tried to look as casual as possible when she walked away. Now she would have to wait three more hours to find out. But that was ok. She needed time to mentally prepare for whatever he was going to say.
The rest of the day felt like a whole year. The closer it got to 15:00 (3:00 pm), the more anxious Jane became. He has to say yes. Well, he doesn't have to. But I would like him to! What if he already has plans? Oh no...
She walked with her head down as she headed to her locker at the end of the day. She grabbed her Geometry and Health textbooks and closed the door.
"Hey Jane."
They very sound of his voice sent shivers down her spine. She nearly dropped her books when she turned around to see Elliot in all his glory. His bright blue eyes seemed to light up the whole hallway.
"H-hey." Her face when bright red.
"I got your card," he smiled. Ah, no! Not the smile! She thought.
"Oh," was all that came out of her mouth. She immediately wanted to bang her head against the wall. I sound so bloody stupid!
"I was just letting you know that I can come to your party. It sounds cool."
I knew it. I knew he wouldn't be able to come-wait. What did he just say? "Uh...y-you can come?" She asked.
"Yeah," he nodded. "I said it sounds cool."
"Cool..." she sighed. "I mean-cool. Yeah, that's cool you can come. I'll see you this weekend? Or tomorrow? Wait, what day is it?"
Elliot chuckled. "You're funny, Jane. It's Wednesday."
"Oh yeah!" She laughed nervously. "Sorry. See you tomorrow then."
"Bye," He waved. Gosh, even his waves are hot.
"Bye," she waved back awkwardly. Now she could breathe. Then it hit her. Elliot's coming to my party. He's actually coming!!
She ran to the next hall to meet up with Mia and Isabella. Their lockers were right next to each other's whereas her's was two halls away.
"Mia! Isabell!" She yelled excitedly.
"What? What's going on?!" Mia quickly shut her locker.
"He said he could make it!!"
"Oh my gosh, seriously?!" Isabell beamed.
"Yes!!" Jane began jumping up and down and her friends did the same.
"You need to wear something that gets his attention," Mia said.
"Yes! Like a pretty dress?" Isabell suggested. "Purple looks really good on you!"
"I agree."
"Guys, my mum already made me a dress."
"Is it purple?"
"Well...it's more of a dark pink," said Jane.
"Close enough. Honestly, you look better in most colors than I do."
"I think you look good in yellow, Isabell."
"That's what I always tell her!" Said Mia. "By the way, why does your mum always sew your clothes?"
"She doesn't sew all of them. Mostly pajamas or ones for special occasions."
"The one's in the shops are fancier in my opinion."
"Yeah, but they're very expensive."
"I don't think so."
"Oh please," Jane rolled her eyes. "This is coming from an only child whose parents both work."
"True, true."
"I've gotta go," Isabell said. "My mum's always here at this time. See you tomorrow?"
"Yeah," They both nodded. "Bye."
"Ready to walk?" Mia asked.
Jane smiled. "You know it."
Both Jane and Mia lived about ten minutes from the school and their houses were only a block away from each other. That really came in handy for play dates when they were younger. They had been friends since they were 5 years old. About a year later, the war began and they hardly ever got to see each other. Especially since they were both sent to the countryside at different times and ended up in different places. When the war finally ended, they were both about 13 and were reunited. Jane had never been so happy to be back at her old school.
As they walked, Jane looked at what was once an ice cream shop, but was now a pile of bricks covered in ashes. There were still plenty of spots that needed rebuilding after the war. She was grateful her house hadn't gotten blown to bits. But the area around her neighborhood was in desperate need of fixing.
"Alright, this is where I stop," Mia said. "See you tomorrow."
"You too," Jane waved as she watched her friend walk into her house. She headed straight for the next block. She found herself skipping happily. Jane never skipped. Not until last year, at least.
At lot had changed about her since she entered high school. She became more girly, showing more interest in dresses and skirts. She also started to care about her hair more. And she cared about the way she walked, the way her face looked, if she spoke the right way- ok, maybe it wasn't high school. Maybe it was I just Elliot. If Elliot weren't there, she probably would've still been complaining about dresses and not giving a care about the way she carried herself or what others thought of her. But the truth was, she had changed. And she believed it was for the better. She would do anything to make Elliot notice her, even if it meant not being herself.
