Chapter Seven - Ace & Paws
Chapter seven
~Melanie's POV~
I opened the door to Trevor's room and was greeted with Abbie. I smiled at her as she smiled at me. She had a plate of food and a drink. I opened the door wider for her to come in. After she entered I closed the door and made sure to lock it.
She looked at the room examining what I had been doing. I then realised that I had made a complete mess of the room. My OCD then kicked in.
"Oh my god! I'm so sorry about the mess I've made! I hadn't realised it was this bad!"
"Melanie it's fine. We're family now so I'm going to be seeing you a lot like this."
"Oh... right."
"What happened with Trevor? Are you still mad about earlier?"
"Yes, he's such a jerk. He has his nice moments and then he's back to being a jerk."
"Well how about we spend some time to get to know each other?" Abbie suggested and I smiled at the idea.
"You know, I think that is a lovely idea."
"Good job I brought food and drinks then."
"Oh good! I'm starving, what'd you bring?"
"Well, I have a seafood salad and some sparkling water," Abbie explained and I scrunched my face up in disgust. "Is it the sparkling water?" I shook my head. "You don't like seafood?"
"It makes me feel sick. I'm sorry."
"Oh it's fine! I'll go grab something else for you. What would you like?"
"You know I wouldn't mind some pizza and salted popcorn."
"I'll go get some then. Would you like homemade pizza or order in?"
"Homemade always tastes better."
"I think so too." She smiled at me and walked out of the bedroom. I thought I heard a click on the door so I think she had a key to lock it with.
I put on the movie channel and it had nothing on I wanted to watch. I sighed and then noticed a DVD player under the TV. There's bound to be some DVD's around. I started on my search as I noticed a cabinet in the left hand corner of the room next to the door. I know it's not right to snoop in a boys room but I want a film to watch. I would never done this if Trevor hadn't annoyed me earlier. I know very much well of what I could find.
I hesitantly walked over to the cabinet. Once I reached it I opened it up to reveal loads of stacked DVDs. Jackpot!
I looked through before I came across The Lion King. Once I found that I practically snatched it out the cupboard and skipped back to the DVD player. I eagerly inserted the disc and turned the tv onto the DVD station. Not long after, Abbie came back in with the Pizza and the popcorn. One of her maids escorted her in with two coke floats. How I felt like it was Christmas. She left the drinks and walked out closing and locking the door.
Abbie looked at me and smiled, I patted the bed and moved over to let her sit next to me. She passed me my pizza but I kind of wanted the popcorn. She gave me the type of look my mum would give me if I did something I shouldn't have and that she knew I had done it and I tried to deny it. "You're not having the popcorn until you've eaten your pizza." She told me and I sighed. I played the film and she smiled.
"This was one of my favourite Disney films when I was little, it still is. They just give me that nostalgic feeling, sometimes I need that you know?"
"I know that feeling very well Melanie. It was also one of Trevor's favourites." Abbie told me which surprised me.
"Really? Trevor liked the Lion King?"
"Yes he did, he was actually quite a Disney nerd. I guess he grew out of it eventually though." She said and started on her seafood salad.
"What was Trevor like as a child? Or even before he turned to crime with his gang?" I asked trying to imagine him younger or actually a nice-ish person.
"As a child, he was a happy boy. Much like any other boy, he had his adventurous side which he's always had. After he hit the teens he was good to a certain degree. You know the teenage rebellion stage? Yeah, well he hit that phase. His father and I nearly threw him out a couple of times. We gave him the benefit of the doubt, there were girls he brought home countless of them- Oops, scratch that I shouldn't have said that. We liked a few of his girlfriend's that he had but none of them made any effort to get to know us. So I never really really liked his girlfriend's apart from you. Except one maybe."
"Well I never really was one of his girlfriend's though. I was just a girl he picked up off the side of an alley and decided he was going to keep me. Kind of like a prize I guess."
"Awh Melanie you're no prize, don't feel so trapped here. I beg you. You can come and go as you please as much as you like. You're not being held hostage."
"Thanks for that, I needed it."
We finished our foods and chomped on the popcorn. I was crying by the time mufusa died and Abbie was hugging me to help me stop crying. Soon enough the film ended. Abbie and I walked down with our plates and bowls and into the kitchen to wash them up. The maid saw what we were doing and tried to take over from us but Abbie and I are as stubborn as each other and wouldn't let her.
~~~~~
Later that day I decided to go out. They had a car pull up for me and they asked if I could drive but I said I couldn't. They had a driver come down to drive me around. We got introduced apparently this was Abbie's driver when she wanted to go out. His name was Dave.
We got in the car it wasn't anything sporty but it was a fancy car. I felt a little under dressed to be sitting in it. Dave looked at me in the interior mirror and asked, "Where are we going miss?" It kind of shocked me to be called miss.
"You can call me Mel, being called Miss makes me feel old. I'd like to go to this animal shelter down in the city. I usually volunteer down there, it's called Ace and Paws. Do you know where it is? I could direct you if needed."
"No I know where it is Mel." He started the engine and pulled away. It was eerily quiet in the car. I thought to make some sort of conversation.
"So how long have you known Abbie and her family?" I asked trying to break the silence.
"It's been a long time that I've knew Abbie for. We went to high school together."
"Has she changed much?"
"Yes, she's changed a lot. You wouldn't recognize her from how she is now."
"Really? That much? Damn, what was she like?"
"The total opposite of how she is now."
"Oh, how close were- are you?"
"We aren't that close anymore. I kind of accused her husband of abusing her once and since then it's been a little iffy. Things can't really go back to normal after something like that, it takes times."
"Why did you accuse him of doing that?"
"She had a stage where she was on anti-depressants after her miscarriage and she became drowsy taking them. She was clumsy she kept falling down everywhere. She fell down the stairs and bruised herself quite a bit. She then fell in the kitchen and cut herself with a knife. She kept falling over and bruising herself but she wasn't telling me anything about her falling, so I naturally assumed something was wrong cause before then she'd tell me pretty much everything. She stopped when she was on those anti-depressants and I assumed the worst. I made up for the accusation of course."
"Oh, do we have any music CD's in the car?"
"Yeah they're in the back in the middle department that comes down. It used to be cup holders but we modified it."
"Oh okay thank you." I pulled it down and there was a lot of pop music and a little bit of rock. I was taken back, is this just Abbies music or her husbands or maybe even Trevors? "Are these just Abbies CD's or are they mixed with others like Trevors?"
"This is Abbies car only so they're just hers," he noticed how confused I looked and chuckled a little. "She used to be into rock. Though that changed quite quickly when she met John that changed."
"Why did it change?"
"She wanted to please him. She's a people pleaser, if you've not noticed she's too friendly for her own good. Unless Trevor gets her angry."
We soon pulled up outside Ace and Paws. He turned off the engine after telling me to stay put in the car. I did as he said and he got out of the car, he came to my door and opened it up. I got out and rolled my eyes at him. He laughed a little.
"I'm not used to the formalities so there's no need for them."
"Well if you're to be Trevor's wife you best start getting used to them Mel. The men in the family you're marrying into are very protective of their partners and family."
"Yeah well Trevor isn't protective of me. He practically hates me."
"I do not want to take any chances."
"Dave, please. If he finds out I'll deal with him okay? Just don't be so formal with me, it kind of freaks me out."
"I would still rather not take any chances."
I was taken back. What kind of family am I getting into? I walked inside the animal shelter to be greeted by Tim. I hugged him and stroked him. Yes, Tim is a dog. He was a German shepherd, owners dog.
"Mick! It's Mel, are you here?" I called out. I looked down at the fluffy dog in front of me and gave him another hug which he snuggled into. I loved Tim like he was my own dog. He had a golden brown coat and his eyes were hazel. He was such a happy dog. I looked up and Mick was standing in front of me.
"Its been a while, did you fall off the edge of the earth?" He chuckled and I chuckled as well. We gave each other a hug.
"Its what it's felt like believe me." I told him and Dave walked in behind me. Mick looked at him and smiled.
"Hello, welcome to Ace and Paws. Are you looking to adopt a pet?" He asked and I laughed awkwardly.
"He's-"
"No, I'm guarding Mel." He said and I mentally face palmed myself.
I sighed, "Mick this is Dave. Dave this is Mick. How's Chace?" I asked him and his smile dropped.
"He's getting into fights again."
I groaned, he was going to stop this last time I spoke to him. He gave me his word. "Do you need me to speak to him again?"
"If you don't mind, he usually listens to you. I swear you've got some mind control over him or something."
"I wouldn't say that." I said awkwardly. I walked to the staff only entrance and Dave followed me. Mick didn't say anything surprisingly. I went out the back and to Chaces little hideout.
I found him with a black eye and cut lip. He had a graze on his left cheek and a cut on his right eyebrow. I sighed.
"Wow, you really went for it this time didn't you?" I asked and he looked up at me. He looked to Dave and narrowed his eyes.
"Whose the suit?" He asked, "Did my dad send him to take me away?"
"What? No, Chace what the hell has gotten into you? Your dad loves you. He wouldn't dare send you away."
"I'm sorry it just slipped." I sat in front of him on the ground.
"Chace, look at me," I told him and he did. " What happened? You promised you would stop the fighting."
"Can he go away?" He asked me looking at Dave. He obviously didn't feel comfortable around him.
"Dave, can you get me a drink please?" I asked.
"What'd you like Mel?"
"Some Pepsi will be fine. Unless... You can get me a Starbucks mocha frappe?"
"Sure don't go anywhere else from here. Promise me that." He said and I promised him.
"What's his deal?" Chace asked as Dave walked back inside. Tim came running out to me and I laughed as he jumped on me with joy. I made him sit by my side which was between Chace and I.
"He just likes to do his job properly."
"His job? What's his job?"
"The family he works for makes him a little bit paranoid. He's a chauffeur."
"F*ck, when did you become rich?" He asked me.
"Me? I didn't. My god, it's a long story. But we're not here to talk about me. What's going on with you? What happened? You promised me." I reminded him.
"It was just a gang thing."
"No Chace, 'just a gang thing' isn't going to cut it. You promised me you were done with the gangs."
"Trust me, I was. When I nearly lost you because of it I was done. They just jumped me. Out of nowhere. I'm lucky that a couple of my used to be gang members were around. They helped me get out of it, at least alive."
"What do you mean at least alive?"
"They had knives and one of them - their leader - had a gun. He was trying to kill me. F*cking d*ck came out of nowhere. He looked pretty pissed about something but I'm not sure I caused it. He was out to let some steam off. You could see it on his face, he wanted to do some harm but he was conflicted when he grabbed his gun out."
"Conflicted?"
"Yeah, maybe his girlfriend didn't let him f*ck her. That's happened before."
"What a douche." I looked at Chace at the same time he looked at me.
"So now you know about me, what's new with you?"
"You wouldn't even want to know."
"Then why am I asking?"
I sighed giving in. I then let everything spill, from the start of coming out of the club to the day I became engaged and from that to the present. The only thing that made me curious was why Chace wanted to know the guys name, and when I told him why he looked so angry for.
