Chapter Eight - Our Park

Chapter Eight

I couldn't stop thinking about Chace and what his expression had been after I told him Trevor's name. I had wondered about why he was so interested but nothing had came to mind. I was so confused. Nothing had gotten better between Trevor and I, Josh seemed more at home with living with us for now. We were moving to Seattle in two days and I still wasn't ready for this big change. I worried about leaving Chace here on his own, where I wouldn't be able to reach him. It was a 15 hour flight to Seattle and it would be a 15 hour flight back to Australia.

I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket of my jeans and I took out my phone whilst walking to the kitchen. Chace was texting me. I unlocked my phone and looked at the message, I was actually so thankful that Abbie got me a new one.

"Hey, are you busy?"

I smiled at it, he always asked whether I was busy or not to talk. He had always been considerate of me. I sat on the stool on the island in the middle of the kitchen. Gino said a quick hello and asked what I was after. I told him I was after some porridge and he cracked on with his job. Gino would always make small talk with me in the kitchen which I quite enjoyed. I started writing my message back to Chace.

"Hey, no I'm not busy. What's up?"

I sent the message and could already see him respond by the dots that appeared on my iPhone. I chuckled to myself. "Who's making you chuckle like that? It's not a sight we see often here from you." Gino questioned me. I looked up to see Gino watching me closely whilst stirring the saucepan of porridge. I only then realized he had been watching me this whole time.

"It's a close friend that I know down town," He just simply nodded, it looked like he wanted to say something else. "What's on your mind Gino?" I asked him. He simply said, "More than a close friend?" He looked away from me after he had asked as if it was too much of a personal question. "No, he's one of my best friends. I've got no romantic feelings for him. I kind of balance him out though, he's one for gangs and getting into trouble. I'm just a little worried that when I go to Seattle he's going to get into trouble and the gangs again."

My phone vibrated in my hand and I looked at it. "I want to see you. Where can we meet?" I smiled and thought about the park we always used to meet at.

"How about our park? I can't remember the last time we were there and I would love to be able to go there before Sunday."

I was still a little sad about not going to be able to see him after Sunday for a while.

"I was just thinking that myself."

I chuckled and smiled at my phone, by then the porridge was ready. Gino had popped a little raspberry on top of it as well to make the garnish. I smiled at the gesture and Gino had disappeared out of the kitchen before I could thank him. I grabbed the spoon and before I could take a bite, someone took the raspberry off the top. I looked over to where it went at the culprit and found Trevor had just sabotaged my porridge.

"You're so rude, you know that right?" I glared.

"I got to get my nutrient too, baby." He smirked at me, I rolled my eyes and went back to eating my porridge. He sat next to me and just stared at me. I locked my phone and turned to him after I had finished eating.

"What do you want?" I asked him.

"I want to take you out on a date."

His words shocked me, right to the core. I had no idea how to answer that.

"W-What? Why?"

"We don't know each other very well, it seems like we're stuck with each other now so I think we should start considering getting to know each other. Therefore, we should go on a date." He explained.

"Well, that's the most considerate and nicest thing you've said to me... I think."

"Now, now, I complimented you the other day did I not?"

"Ah, so it was a compliment after all."

"Wow, you're sneaky. Was that on purpose, making me slip up?"

"No, but I'm bloody glad I said it." I chuckled and moved off of the stool with my bowl to wash it up. I heard him move but I figured he was off to do his own thing, however he grabbed the towel and started drying my bowl up and put it to the side. I watched him curious to figure out whether this was just an act due to the uproar last time he had to dry something. I grabbed a different towel and dried my hands, after I did that I turned around and Trevor was right behind me. He pulled the towel to meet the ends of it and pulled it straight, he then put his arms around me closing me in. I put my hands on his chest to push him away from me. "Let me go."

"I don't want to, you look so vulnerable when your frustrated."

"You're such a perv!" I exclaimed, trying to push him away a bit more.

"You know, if you keep pushing me like that sooner or later I'll lose my balance and end up on top of you." He stated which was probably true and it made me stop instantly.

"What do you really want Trevor? You know, other than that date because if you were totally serious about it you'd be telling me where we'd be going, the time and date of it too. Why're you being so nice all of a sudden?"

He was silent for a few seconds debating to tell the truth or not, "Josh said that if I could get you to fall in love with me within the next week, he'd buy me something new."

"Let go of me now," I asked clenching my teeth, he felt the tension and let me go. I walked away from him and then stopped, "You know, I was actually thinking you had stopped being a jerk for one second. But of course, everything you do has motive what was I thinking? You'll always be the jerk you are now, no matter what. You just can't help yourself can you? You just have to be the person that everybody hates, but you know what?-"

"What?"

"Do not cut me off! Being a jerk comes with things that you don't get automatically, like real friends and girlfriends. People don't like Jerks and they sure as hell won't befriend one either, let alone date one. You best wise up, otherwise this will be over sooner than you think." I continued to walk out of the kitchen. I walked into the living room and to the front door, Trevor had followed me to the living room.

"Where are you going Melanie?" He asked as though he wanted to make sure I was safe.

"Out." I told him walking out and closing the door.

Dave had been waiting outside for me and I wondered how he knew I was going out. I was about to ask but he told me to stay put so he could go get the car. I figured that it was probably best to drive to the park as it's a pretty far walk from Trevor's house. It used to be only a ten minute walk from my parents house. Dave came round with the car pretty quickly and I got in.

"Where to Mel?" He asked and I told him to go the central park. He nodded and started to drive.

"Dave, how did you know I was going out?" I asked him curiosity. There had to be a logical explanation.

"The bodyguards and chauffeurs have an office in the garage where the cars are kept, we have CCTV inside the house so we know if there's a possible enemy on the grounds. You have to remember that Trevor with his gang makes his family and the people he lives with a target."

"Which is why you didn't want to leave me the other day at Ace and Paws." I said nodding slowly, catching on.

"Correct. We have it for security measures, the CCTV has microphones as well so it's easy to tell whether there is an intruder. It makes Abbie and John feel more secure and Trevor can have peace of mind that no rival gangs would attack again."

"Did you just say 'again'?"

"Yes, a rival gang of Trevor's hit the house before and we couldn't do anything. They got into the house quickly and held his parents captive. Trevor hated himself for letting it happen but his gang members were loyal to Trevor and had helped him. Not all of Trevor's gang members are bad people, they're just people who can't seem to find a way out of the life they're living. They have big ambitions, I've met a lot of them. You can trust Trevor and his gang."

"It's not exactly like he let it happen though is it?"

"No, but none the less he blames himself for it. His parents didn't have the best reactions about it though. They had a normal reaction as they had no idea that Trevor had been leading a gang, and was in the middle of a gang war. His gang activity has been higher recently then usual which is why they had made the deal about the fiancee thing."

"He really didn't tell them?"

"He didn't, he kept it to himself. Of course, us bodyguards knew about the situation but we were sworn to secrecy. We weren't allowed to tell Trevor's parent's as we had no idea what Trevor would do if we did."

"Why're you telling me all this Dave? He has gang wars now more than ever? His parent's never knew until they were held captive and that you were all practically fearing Trevor?"

"I'm telling you because I don't think it's fair to make you marry Trevor without having known his past. I wasn't able to tell Abbie and John, by the time I tried it was too late. They found out for their-selves and had put us bodyguards and chauffeurs through immense questioning as to why we didn't tell them. I want you to know what you're getting into, you seem like a nice girl and I'm not sure whether Trevor is the right person for you Mel. I'm hoping this doesn't make me sound rude as I bear no ill will against Trevor."

"I appreciate you telling me this Dave. I understand your looking out for me and it's part of your job. I think Trevor should have told me instead, I kind of wish he did so I would know he actually cares about me in the slightest. What's going to happen when we arrive in Seattle?"

"Most of his gang wars are based over there. That's why they have a house here in Australia, it's so if anything get's out of hand back in Seattle they can retreat here for a while. Our main accommodation is in Seattle, the estate is bigger then the house we have here. When we go back to Seattle, you will be taken care of more. Your security will be a top priority, so you don't need to worry about that cause we've got you covered."

"Well, that's a bit more reassuring," I stated and then something popped in my head. "Hey Dave! Can you teach me how to drive?"

"Why would you need to do that?"

"Because I don't want to be driven everywhere."

"But it's my job to do so."

"No its your job because I can't drive myself as I haven't got my license," He was about to say something else to protest but I got in first, "And besides, what's going to happen if Abbie and I want to go out to different destinations at the same time? You'll be obligated to Abbie."

"Trevor would take you."

"Hah, yeah no thank you. Please Dave! Teach me how to drive."

He sighed and finally said, "Fine." I cheered victoriously and by then we had arrived. I tried to get David to leave me in the park but he had already parked in the car park. I walked to Chace's and I's favourite place which was a big oak tree that was near the center of the park. I had spotted him there listening to his music with his headphones on, he seemed to be reading something on his phone. Probably his dad texting or something. I turned around to Dave and stopped walking.

"Dave, are you able to observe from a distance? I want to have a private talk with him."

"Only if we decide on a signal in case your in trouble."

"Dave, Chace is my best friend. He would never hurt me."

"I would still prefer some sort of signal just in case Melanie." Dave told me with a stern look on his face. I'd never seen this sort of look on his face before and it threw me off a little. It was the sort of look that made you not want to argue with him.

I sighed and nodded, "Alright, what sign do you want me to use?"

"It's got to be your decision. Abbie and John have their own signal, whenever they're both in trouble they will signal both of their signals combined. So what's your signal going to be? Bare in mind, it can't be raising your hands up to the head or something. We need something small to be discrete."

I nodded and started thinking, a lightbulb moment hit me and I looked at him. I crossed my left arm over my chest and made a peace sign. Dave nodded in agreement. I grinned at him, "So I'm good right?" I asked.

He nodded at me, "Yes you are, but you realise that's a sign language for 'See you later'?"

"I do now, but that's not so bad. I'm not sure how long I'm going to take though."

"Melanie, you won't see him for a while after we leave for Seattle. Take as long as you need to, I'll be around. Would you like me to get coffees for you both?"

"That would be great, I'll have a mocha frappuccino and if you can get Chace a caramel one that would be awesome. Thank you so much Dave."

He nodded and we parted ways. I walked towards the big oak tree Chace was sat under. As I got closer to him, he lifted his head up looking in my direction. I waved a little and he waved back. I sat down against the tree next to Chace. He looked at me whilst I did and took his headphones off. He had an amused look about him.

"What's with the look?" I asked him and he looked away, looking around the park.

"No butler this time?" He smirked.

"He's not a butler, he's a chauffeur and he has a name. It's Dave." I told him smugly.

"So no chauffeur this time?" He rearranged the question.

"Not at the minute. He's gone to get us some coffees." I chuckled at him.

"Ah, so I'm going to be poisoned?" He asked, and I looked at him astonished.

"What do you mean by that? Dave isn't going to poison you."

"Your fiance might."

"Trevor would probably poison anyone, even me most likely." I laughed it off. It's not exactly like Trevor would care if I was to one day disappear anyway. He had already made it clear that he hated me or in the least didn't like me very much.

After I finished laughing I looked back at Chace to find him shocked from what I had said. I thought about it for a minute, maybe it wasn't the best idea to tell him that.

"If that is how he treats you, leave him. Melanie you deserve so much better than that."

"It's not that simple, I promised his mother I wouldn't walk out on him."

"I don't care about a promise you made, I care about you Mel and if you're being treated this way then he doesn't deserve you. I will not let him get away with this."

"Chase, this is just how it is. I made a promise and I intend to keep it, sure Trevor can be a jerk even if he hates me I would like to think I could help change him for the better."

"I don't like it though."

"I know," I sighed and took a deep breath in. It was the time to ask him about why he had the reaction he had hearing Trevor's name. "Also, I want to know why you reacted the way you did when you heard Trevor's name."

"He's the guy who tried to kill me."

Those very words made me feel the blood drain from my face and I felt light headed. Next thing I knew everything was pitch black as I felt my body sway to the side to the ground.
