I keep on running, the pain and adrenaline coursing through me. I'm hurt. I feel dead. There is no cure to the pure betrayal I feel coursing through me. Four years ago on that day, he'd said to me, "I promise to do my best to never hurt you again, and I swear by the Moon Goddess I will never leave you." Four years later to the day he'd done exactly that. He'd left me. He'd hurt me. Oh god, this was too much to take.
Three days earlier
"Hey sweetheart!" he'd said enthusiastically, walking into our room with his award-winning smile. He set down a plate full of delicious breakfast foods on my lap. I laughed. He was always doing these sweet gestures. "Happy Birthiversary!! You know, because it's our birthday but it's also the day we realized we were mates!" He jumped on the bed like a five-year-old. I hugged him and planted a short peck on his lips. I could have made it last longer, but there was food to be eaten. Priorities, priorities.
After finishing my breakfast, I walked downstairs to see Blake standing with his parents, the old Alpha and Luna of the pack. They seemed to be arguing when all of a sudden he stiffened and stuck his nose in the air. It was strange because that's how wolves act when they first meet their mate. "Hey, babe!" I said enthusiastically. He jumped a bit and turned around, scrunching his eyebrows in confusion. "Is everything okay?" I asked him.
"Uh...Yeah," he said uncertainly. I gave him a short kiss and went over to the fridge to get something to start breakfast when she walked in. She was a gorgeous female, muscular with long blonde hair that reached the middle of her shoulders. She had been looking at her phone when her head snapped up and she locked eyes with him. My mate. My savior. The person I was about to lose. Her next words turned my world upside down.
"Mate."
Blake froze, a look of guilt and indecision on his face. I couldn't believe it. he had another mate? But I was supposed to be his mate. I was supposed to be his one and only match. She didn't belong. She needed to leave before I lost it. After about a minute Blake spoke, "Mags, I can explain. I was going to tell you. You weren't supposed to learn this way. I was given two mates by the Moon Goddess. As the Alpha of the Black Moonstone Pack I am given two mates and I have to choose between them. Whoever I choose will become the Luna of the pack."
I couldn't believe him, "You'll choose me though, right? I'm your mate, and I've been by your side for four years now." I was crying now, because I knew. She was gorgeous. I wasn't. She was perfect and muscular, perfect Luna material. I was still learning how to train. Even after four years of trying my hardest, I was nothing near as perfect as her. He would choose her. With or without my pleading, her would choose her.
"I'm sorry Mags." It came out as a whisper. And as he said the words. Those words that would tear my hear apart, I knew I wouldn't be here much longer because I had to leave.
"I, Blake Cadman, reject you, Maggie Padfield, as my mate and Luna."
Back to present
I ran, and ran until I hit the border of the pack, and then I ran more. If I didn't stop running, I would turn back, because no matter how much he had hurt me, I still loved him. Because even though he had a mate, and I would never be her, I still wanted to be so badly.
