CHAPTER TWO
"Girl Meets Mr. Squrriels"
(primrose's for this part of the chapter)
The next day Primrose started school back at John Quincy Adams. She was so excited to see her best friends. She missed them so much and things just haven't been the same without them. Walking into the school, she immediately gets attacked with a hug. She smiled and laughed when she saw it was Farkle. He looked a little older than the last time she saw him, but his familiar grin and sparkling eyes were unchanged.
"Farkle!" Primrose exclaims, returning the hug with enthusiasm. "It's so good to see you!"
"Primrose!" Farkle replies, pulling back slightly to look at her with a wide smile. "Welcome back! We've missed you."
Primrose felt a surge of warmth at his words, her heart swelling with affection for her friend. "I've missed you too, Farkle. It feels like forever since I've seen you guys."
Farkle nods in agreement, his expression turning serious for a moment. "Yeah, things haven't been the same without you here. But now that you're back, everything feels right again."
Primrose's smile widens at his words, touched by the sincerity in his voice. "Thanks, Farkle. It's good to be back."
As they pulled away from the hug, smiling at each other. He walked with her to the principal's office so she could get her schedule and locker number. They caught up along the way , exchanging stories about what had happened in their lives since they last saw each other. Both of them then walk down the hallway, heading over to the bench where Lucas was sitting at. Her gaze went to the History classroom where she saw Maya and Riley standing there, having an argument, and it sounded pretty bad.
She frowns, tilting her head to the side. "What's wrong with them?"
Glancing over at Maya and Riley, Farkle sighs. "They're fighting because Riley stood up for Lucas instead of Maya."
Lucas smiles when he saw Primrose. "Hey, Rose." Primrose smiles upon hearing the nickname only Lucas and Zay called her. She missed hearing that nickname and she missed Lucas and Zay. "Glad you're back." Lucas said to her.
"Yeah, me too." Primrose nodded in agreement while Farkle sat on the bench next to Lucas.
"Ooh, chick fight."
They look over to their right, seeing that Zay had said that. Primrose smiled at seeing her friend she made in Texas.
"Chick fight right here, ladies and gentlemen. One dollar to see the shocker by the locker." Zay grinned, pointing at Maya and Riley as kids gathered around them. May and Riley just looked at him with annoyed expressions.
"Brought to you by Zay Babineaux Enterprises." Zay pointed at himself.
"Zay!" Primrose excitedly spoke, smiling widely at him.
Zay looks over in the direction he heard someone say his name, smiling when he saw Primrose. "Rose!" He goes over to her, pulling her into a hug. "Why didn't you tell me you were coming here?" He asked her, raising an eyebrow as they pulled away from the hug.
"I wanted it to be a surprise." Primrose shrugs, glancing over at Maya and Riley with a small frown. "But it seems like I came back on the wrong day."
"No, it's fine. Don't let our stupid argument bring you down." Maya tells her, pulling her into a hug. "Honestly, I missed you."
A smile tugs on Primrose's lips while she hugs Maya back. "Missed you too."
"Yeah, well, I missed you more than Maya did." Riley chimed in. Just as Maya and Primrose pull away from the hug, Riley pulled her in for one. Primrose hugged her back, letting out an awkward chuckle.
After the hug, Primrose moves over to the bench, sitting next to Farkle. "Okay, I don't want to be the cause of this fight." Lucas sighed, getting off of the bench.
"Too late, Huckleberry." Maya shook her head.
Zay chuckles at the nickname. "Huckleberry." Primrose chuckled as well, amused by the nickname Maya called Lucas.
Lucas turns to face Maya with annoyance. "You wanna know why it happened, Maya? All you do is call me names."
Maya looks at Lucas with a harsh glare. "This has nothing to do with you, you I'll deal with later."
Primrose takes a step back, grimacing along with the boys under Maya's intimidating stare. By then she and Farkle were standing next to Lucas with Zay being the only one on the bench.
Maya points at Riley and then back at Lucas as she speaks. "This happened because she stuck up for you."
Riley sighs heavily, obviously annoyed with Maya. "I didn't stick up for him."
Maya turns to face her with an upset expression on her face. "You didn't disagree with him."
"How could she disagree with him when he's right?" Farkle asked.
Maya points at him, looking at him with the same glare she sent to Lucas. "You're next."
Farkle's face lit up and he smiles at her. "I want to be first."
Primrose would be lying if she said her heart didn't break a little at hearing that. Maya then took a step back with Riley, both girls grimacing.
"He is right, you know." Zay pointed at Lucas.
"Why does that mean so much to everybody?" Maya questions, looking at everyone. "When being right is more important than being friends...Then that's the end of best friends."
Primrose's eyes wide at hearing that and she shared a worried look with Farkle and Lucas. She really hoped that this fight wouldn't be the end of Maya and Riley and hoped that they could work it out. The bell then rings and they all walk into their first class which was History, of course. She handed her transfer slip to their teacher who also happened to be Riley's dad, Cory Matthews, when she walked in.
He stops writing on the chalkboard, taking the slip from her. He smiles. "It's good that you're back, Primrose."
Primrose smiles. "It's good to be back, Mr. Matthews."
Primrose sat in the seat behind Farkle. That was her assigned seat before she left and she was surprised that no one was sitting in it. She looked towards the front, noticing Farkle hadn't sit down yet.
Farkle looks at the board that read Belgium 1831 and he sighed, shaking his head. "Yeah, no chance." Even though he wanted to learn about it, he knew that they wouldn't be learning about it. That's why he took the eraser and erased the board.
Cory looks at him with confusion and then looks at his daughter and Maya. "Is this still going on?"
"How long has this been going on?" Primrose inquired.
"Long enough." Corey sighed.
"Look at 'em!" Farkle gestured to Maya and Riley who wouldn't even look at each other.
Cory cringes when he looked at them. "Yowzas."
Farkle then took his seat that's behind Riley and in front of Primrose. Maya stands up. "I'm moving my seat."
"Yeah," Riley rolls her eyes. "You just do that."
Cory turns to Lucas with a raised eyebrow. "Mr. Friar?"
Lucas raises his arms up dramatically and apologizes. "I'm sorry, I couldn't take it anymore. I finally called her a name."
"That's what this fight is about?" Primrose chuckled, wondering why the girls were arguing over something so silly. Maya sent her a glare that makes her shuts up and lean back in her seat.
"Yeah. She's called me thousands of names. I called her one name." Lucas explained, not seeing why Maya was being so upset over this.
Maya looks at Zay and demands, "Move."
A giggle leaves Primrose's lips when her friend does a little wave dance with his arms. Maya then grabbed the collar of his shirt, looking like she was ready to punch him.
Nodding, Zay smirks. "Do it."
Lucas takes Maya's hand off of him, putting it on the collar of his shirt. "He's under my protection. You want to tangle with me?"
Maya shakes her head. "Not yet." Letting go of his shirt, she then walks over to Yogi. "Move."
Primrose smiles when Yogi does a little dance with a smile on his face. Zay smiled and nodded, looking as if he was proud of him. Primrose was surprised when Maya actually giggled a bit at his antics before she finally decided to go back to her original seat.
Primrose turns back to the board seeing that Cory had wrote something new on it and she raised an eyebrow, noticing it was the word war. Maya and Riley then argue with each other more, not stopping until Cory interrupted them, getting everyone's attention to the board.
"World wars can begin with a single gunshot. And wars between friends can also begin with an isolated event." Cory explained. He then told them a story about how in college his friends had a war and how it was great until it wasn't.
"I won't let it come to that, Mr. Matthews." Lucas spoke.
Farkle nods in agreement. "Neither will I."
"Me neither." Primrose chimed in.
"Maya." Riley then gets Maya's attention.
Maya sighs. "What?"
Riley glances at Maya with a determined expression. "Let me tell you how much I am not going to talk to you."
"You're pathetic at this." Maya told her.
"Well, we've never done this before!" Riley exclaimed.
"Sorry, guys, but I-I think this is gonna take someone a little better at this than us." Cory said. "This is gonna take someone with a very unique set of skills."
****
Later that night, Primrose went over to Riley's house since she was told by Cory that they might need her help with trying to fix this. It confused her why they would need her help of all people. He said it was because she's best friends to both of the girls and that she was sort of the glue of her friendship with Maya and Riley so he thought maybe she would be of help with solving Maya and Riley's argument. Primrose was now in Riley's bedroom. Maya and Riley set at each ends of the bay window. When Primrose saw Riley's uncle Eric, she was surprised that they asked him to help, and only hoped that he could actually help them.
"I called my brother here to help because no one here wants to see your battle become a war." Cory explained, standing beside the bed Topanga, Auggie, and Primrose were sitting on.
"And Eric's really good at this," Topanga chimes in. "Because you wanna believe that everybody has to be good at something."
"Thank you, Tuba." Eric points at her with a smile. He points at Primrose, glancing at his brother. "Why is Little Flower here?"
Primrose smiles at the nickname he had for her. "I'm moral support."
Cory nods, pointing at her. "Yeah, she's moral support. And also here for backup if everything you try fails."
Cory then explains how his brother is good at this because he knows how to talk to people well. Eric nods, walking over to the bay window, and sits between the girls. "Right. Now...Which one of you is Riley's friend, Moesha?"
"It's Maya." Maya corrected him.
Eric nods. "Oh, okay. So what are you fighting about?"
"She didn't take my side." Maya replied.
"I couldn't take her side." Riley shakes her head. "Based on what she said, which is the problem with this whole thing, because Maya is making too big of a deal of what was said."
"Uh-huh. Okay. Okay." A confused look forms on Eric's face. "Which one was she?"
The room goes quiet for a moment before Riley stands up, explaining that she was the one who used to be her best friend. Maya got upset about that, standing up to face her as she said that best friends are supposed to stand up for each other in front of people.
"Okay." Eric stands up, standing between them before they continued. "Listen, Riley, look," He then brings Riley to the middle of the room. "In Margie's point of view,"
"Maya's point of view." Primrose corrected the name as Maya sat back down.
"Maya. Yeah, whatever." Eric waves a dismissive hand at her and Primrose chuckles lightly. Eric then continues while Maya sits back on the bay window. "Right and wrong don't matter. There's nothing more important than the friendship."
"I just can't side with her this time." Riley sighs and then starts to vent. "This time we can't just go into Candy Cane world. We can't go skipping over the rainbow bridge with our underwear on our head!"
"Yeah. Yeah." Eric chuckles awkwardly, scratcing the back of his head. "I'm not doing that again."
Primrose looks at him weirdly. She wouldn't be surprised if he actually did that, Eric wasn't the smartest person in the world. She still couldn't believe it when her teacher told her Eric was elected as mayor.
"When a real friend comes into your life, I mean..." Eric continues. "If one true friend comes through this window, then sometimes to protect the friendship, right and wrong, they have to go out the window."
Topanga had gotten off the bed, now standing beside her daughter. "Do you understand?" Eric inquired.
Topanga and Riley shake their heads, both putting emphasis on the word 'no'. "No."
Primrose looks over at Cory when he speaks. "Honey," Cory speaks to his wife. "I think Eric's employing a broad-based concept of value of friendship, taking priority-"
"I'm sorry, are you explaining something to me?" Topanga interrupted him with her arms crossed, looking at him with raised eyebrows.
Cory quickly shakes his head. "No."
Topanga smiles and then turns to Eric. "Yo, bozo."
"Yes?" Eric raised an eyebrow.
"A true friend always lets her friend know what she is really thinking." Topanga tells him. "That is the definition of friendship. Is there anybody here that could possibly disagree with that?"
Cory goes to speak again, but Auggie was quick to cover his mouth with his hand. "Are you kidding me?"
Primrose chuckles. Once Cory is silent Auggie takes his hand off as Eric faces Topanga. "Yeah, okay, you know what no one can argue with there, Tomato? When I finally hear what this argument is about and fix it all up in, like, one second."
Topanga just shakes her head, taking a step backwards to the bed to sit on it. "Yeah, okay, Malala, come here." Eric gestures for Maya. Maya reluctantly stands up, walking over to them to stand in front of Riley as Eric speaks. "Now, I need you to tell us what this fight is about, so I can fix it."
"Lucas called me short." Maya informed him.
"Fix it." Cory told his brother.
Eric shakes his head, holding his hands in front of him in defense. "Yeah, I can't fix that."
"Eric," Cory sighs. "I brought you in because you're the only one I know who can do the impossible. You're my big brother. Fix it."
Eric looks at him and then at Maya and Riley. He sighed, walking over to Maya. He then tried to make her taller by pulling on her head.
"You sure this is a good idea?" Primrose inquired, looking over at Cory with raised eyebrows.
Cory shakes his head. "Nope."
Finally after a while Eric gives up. "Okay, you know what? Fine. Stay a hobbit." Maya frowned. Eric went over to Riley, saying he would just fix her. He then tried to shrink Riley by pushing on her head and Primrose facepalmed. She couldn't believe Eric thought that would actually work.
Eric then takes a step back, looking over at the others near the bed. "Okay, you know, I can't do anything if no one's gonna help."
"Lucas called me a short little stack of pancakes, and Riley didn't say I wasn't." Maya explains with tears brimming her eyes. "And I don't want to be a short little stack of pancakes." She frowns. "I don't think I'm gonna grow anymore."
Eric then steps behind her saying that he might be done with growing, too, and even used some of Maya's hair to wipe his eyes as if he had been crying.
"If it makes you feel any better, I'm short, too." Primrose spoke, smiling when Maya sent her a small smile.

(primrose's outfit for this part of the chapter)
The next day at school they had brought Eric into class. "What are the primary causes of war?" Cory questioned the class.
Eric stands up from sitting at Cory's desk. "You may be wondering why I'm-"
"Not now." Cory interrupted him and Eric sat back down. Cory looked back at the class for answers, pointing at Riley, who raised her hand.
"Freedom." Riley answered.
"Religion." Lucas added.
"Revenge." Primrose chimed in.
"Pancakes." Maya muttered.
Eric then goes to stand up, repeating the sentence he said earlier, but Cory stopped him again so he sat back down.
Riley turns to Maya with a hopeful look in her eyes. "Can't we be friends again?"
"We're at war, Riley." Maya responded, not turning to face her.
"Why?" Riley furrowed her eyebrows.
"Because when I knew I could count on you to defend me, I felt at peace." Maya admits. "Now, I'm not at peace."
"Maya, what's the difference what anybody says?" Riley questioned with furrowed eyebrows.
"Because even if I am short," Maya finally turns to face Riley. "I never felt like I was until you didn't disagree."
"In a war," Cory speaks. "The immediate danger is escalation to other countries."
"It seems like this is about Riley and Maya." Farkle observed.
Primrose nods in agreement. "Maybe because it's about Riley and Maya?"
"Yeah, but how could it escalate-" Farkle was interrupted by Maya throwing a wad of paper at him.
In response, he grabs a fire foam ball blaster gun from under his desk, shooting some the of the foam balls at Maya. His eyes then widens in realization while Maya looked at him with surprise. "I get it now." He quickly put the toy back under his desk.
"Right. So, in order to avoid that," Cory gestures to what just happened with Farkle and Maya. "The next step would be to bring in a mediating body, like the United Nations." He explains. "But unfortunately, they said no, so I've decided to bring in a respected intellect from the north."
"You forgot to mention crazy." Primrose added, sending a sheepish smile to Eric, who looked at her with offense. Her eyes then widened just then seeing Eric was making funny faces with tape all over his face.
Cory nods, pointing at her. "Yeah, that too." He then gestures to his brother, sighing when he noticed the tape on his face. He nervously chuckles at the class before turning back to his brother, whispering, "Now, Eric!"
Eric nods, taking the tape off as he stands up. He screams in pain after ripping off the tape. He furrows his eyebrows. "Now, what was I going to say?"
Primrose and the rest of the kids repeat the question that he said twice. Zay leans over, pointing at Eric. "Who is this guy?"
Cory then explains that he's his brother Eric and that there's no one that he trusts when it comes to the art of meditation.
Eric then gets up, saying, "Meditation. Sitting cross-legged going ohm...My legs are killing me."
When the class stays silent, Eric points at Cory to continue. "Right, so, it's certainly no secret that war has broken out among us. I thought it might be an interesting lesson for you guys to see how rational and caring people can bring war to an end."
"Dad, are you sure?" Riley asked him, looking at him nervously.
Cory nods and smiles reassuringly at her. He pats his brother on the shoulder. "Yeah, he's got this."
Primrose tilts her head to the side, raising her eyebrows when Eric walks to the door and open it, gesturing for everyone to go out there. Farkle looked back at Primrose and shared a confused expression with her before they get up and follow everyone out to the hallway.
"Okay, I need there to be as many people around as possible for this." Eric said as he walked out to the hallway with his brother.
Cory looks at him with confusion. "Why?"
Eric turns to his brother with a small smile. "Well, as mayor, I'm around other people all the time. When you begin to understand them, you get that everybody has the same thing in common."
He turns to Maya and Riley. "Now, here we have two friends at war. Why? Who fired the first shot?"
"I called Maya a short stack of pancakes." Lucas replied, standing beside the bench that Zay sat on. On his other side Primrose and Farkle stood next to him. Maya sat on the bench a few feet away from them while Riley leaned against it.
"Okay," Eric nods. "Now was that really the first shot, or did Maya call you anything to make her say that?"
"She called me Huckleberry." Lucas responded.
"There's also a possibility I may have called him Ranger Rick once." Maya confessed.
Lucas glances at her, raising his eyebrow. "Once?"
"Oh yeah, it's Ranger Roy once, Ranger Rick is everyday." Maya remembered.
"Oh, don't forget about Bucky McBoing Boing." Lucas reminded her.
Maya grins. "Oh, that was a fun day."
"Oh," Lucas looks back at Eric with an annoyed expression. "And she comes up to my face and goes, ha-"
"Hurr." Maya finished what she always says to him with a grin on her face.
"Like it's the way I talk." Lucas continued.
"Oh. Okay, why do you do that?" Eric questioned Maya.
"Because he lets me." Maya pointed at Lucas.
"Well, why do you let her?" Eric looked over at Lucas with confusion.
Zay nods, glancing over at Lucas. "Yeah, I'd like to know that myself. And all he do is call you a short stack of pancakes, and you're mad at him?" He furrowed his eyebrows, looking at Maya.
"I'm not mad at him. I'm mad at her." Maya corrected him, pointing at Riley.
"I'm sorry, Maya, but how could I possibly defend you from how tall you are?" Riley inquired, turning to face her.
"The same way I defend you from how tall you are." Maya answered.
"What?" Riley stood up, furrowing her eyebrows with confusion.
"Let's just say somebody here called you...I don't know, Riley Superklutz." Maya shrugged.
Riley's eyes widen and a surprised expression formes on her face. "What?"
"It's okay, Riley." Maya reassures her. "You know, maybe you got these big old gawky legs and arms that you're not really in such good control of yet." She said, flopping her arms around as she kicks her legs out a few times. She goes to stand on the bench. "So, maybe sometimes you don't walk around so good."
"Do I do that a lot?" Riley spoke in a soft tone.
"No, but sometimes you do this." Maya said and then fell over the bench.
Primrose's eyes grow wide, not expecting her to do that. Some of the kids laugh while Maya immediately stood up, stopping them from laughing. "Hey! Nobody laughs at her but me."
"I've never once heard somebody call me Riley Superklutz." Riley speaks while Maya stands in front of her. "Because I've always had your back." Maya informed her.
Riley looks at everyone and frowns. "That's how you all see me?"
Everyone answers with a 'yes' or a 'yeah'. "Why does it hurt?" Riley sighed.
Farkle shrugs. "Because it's true, Riley. Some of these things are true about us."
Riley turns back to Maya with a look of realization on her face. "But you defended me."
Maya nods with a soft smile on her face. "Of course I defended you."
"Even if it was true?" Riley asked her.
Maya shakes her head. "It doesn't matter."
Eric walks towards them, standing behind Maya. "Why?"
Maya glances at him and shakes her head. "Why what?"
"Why doesn't it matter?" Eric asked her.
"'Cause we're best friends." Maya mumbled and when Eric told her he couldn't hear her Maya said it louder.
"I still can't hear you. Something's wrong!" Eric exclaimed, holding his left ear and then stepped back to stand beside Cory.
"They're best friends, Eric. They realize that. You did it." Cory pointed at him with a smile on his face.
"No, they knew that already." Eric shakes his head. "That's not it. This goes deeper."
"Do you think I'm a super klutz?" Riley looked at Maya and then over at Primrose.
"Yeah." Maya and Primrose nodded.
"Do you think I'm super short?" Maya asked.
"I think you're regular short." Riley answered.
"Me too." Primrose agreed.
Maya smiles at them both. "Thanks."
Riley then asks why Maya or Primrose didn't tell her and they both say they didn't want to hurt her feelings. Riley said that it didn't work as she sits on the floor. Maya then commented she would join her except she was already down there while she sat next to Riley.
"You know," Farkle speaks up, sitting beside Maya. "I never admitted this before, but sometimes I wonder if my desire for world domination actually comes down feeling like I'm squeaky the mouse."
"What makes you feel like that?" Lucas asked while he sat next to Riley.
Farkle stares at him with a glare. "You do."
Lucas furrow his eyebrows and Primrose noticed that it he looked offended. "How?"
"Just by being alive, you freak!" Farkle exclaimed.
Lucas looks at him with surprise. "I'm a freak?"
"Look at you! Look at your freak face, and your freak hair, you make me sick!" Farkle continued to yell, looking at Lucas with anger.
"Hey, you think this is easy? You think it's easy being me everyday?" Lucas questioned, staying quiet when the three of them yelled at him to shut up.
"One dollar to look at the freak." Zay pointed at Lucas, getting off of the bench.
"You're not so great yourself." Primrose chimed in, shaking her head.
Lucas nods in agreement, looking over at Zay. "Yeah, just be quiet Flat Butt."
"What? Really?" Zay asks and turns around in a circle, looking at his butt. "I had no idea."
"Well, you're the one who has the name that literally means who you are." Zay said to Primrose, crossing his arms.
Primrose furrows her eyebrows, looking at him with confusion. "What are you talking about?"
"Your name. It means prim and proper." Zay replies. "Honestly, my first impression of you was that you were a teacher's pet, that you were prim and proper, someone that followed all the rules-"
"Okay, I get what you're trying to say." Primrose interrupts him as a frown tugs on her lips. She looks at everyone. "Does everyone think of me that way?" Her frown grew deeper, feeling hurt when all the kids nodded.
"Wow, okay." Primrose sighs, walking over to Farkle. "Guess I'm joining the circle." She muttered, sitting beside Farkle while Zay sat between Riley and Lucas.
She stard at the floor, regretting a little bit coming back to New York before this day, but at least she know knew what everyone thought of her. It honestly hurt the most when she saw Farkle was one of the kids that nodded. She looks over to her left when she feels a hand on her hand that rested on her leg. A small smile tugged on her lips when Farkle sent her a sympathetic smile, gently squeezing her hand to try and comfort her even though his heart was beating rapidly at the small contact and at the smile on her face.
Primrose's heart beat raced, quickly finding the floor very interesting when she felt her face get hot. She knew that she was blushing and hoped that no one saw it. She went to pull away from his hand, but was shocked and felt a smile creeping on her face when he held onto it tighter. He was hesitant at holding onto her hand tighter, but he didn't want to let go yet, and it seemed like she didn't mind.
"You got this?" Cory turned to his brother with worry and Eric nodded.
"Yeah," Eric replies. "People elected me as mayor because they trusted me with their issues."
"You mean political issues?" Riley looked at Eric.
"Nope. Don't know anything about those." Eric shakes his head. He smiles. "No, they trust me with their people issues, which it turns out that everybody has, and they all seem to show up right about now."
"The enemy's not each other, guys." Eric explains as the five of them looked over at him with furrowed eyebrows. "You're all going through the same thing."
"It's part of growing up." Cory nodded.
Riley sighs heavily. "I'm a klutz."
"I'm a pancake." Maya spoke.
"Squeak." Farkle chimed in.
Primrose shakes her head. "Prim and proper."
"Freak." Lucas said.
"That's why it hurts to sit." Zay realized.
"Well, what a bunch of weirdos we are." Riley chuckled.
