CHAPTER TWENTY

"GIRL MEETS JEXICA"

(primrose's outfit for this part of the chapter)

Primrose was hanging out with the boys, sitting on top of the bench near the railing of the stairs beside Farkle with her blue colored laptop on her lap. She and Farkle used their laptops and Lucas and Zay just used their phones. Lucas sat on the main part of the bench beside the couple while Zay leaned against it. They were working on their profile for the school's website and so were Maya and Riley who sat on the floor on top of the steps near them.

"Favorite movie?" Primrose asks. She smiles. "Any Marvel movie ever made."

Lucas chuckles. "But it just asked for a favorite movie. Not favorite movies."

Primrose narrows her eyes at him. "Asking me to choose what Marvel movie is my favorite is like asking me to choose between Farkle and fashion."

Farkle tilts his head to the side, furrowing his eyebrows. "I don't know if I should feel happy or insulted."

Zay nods. "Both."

"Anyway," Lucas said, dragging out the word. "My favorite movie is Butch Cassidy."

"Mine's Empire Strikes Back." Farkle smiled.

"The Notebook."

Lucas, Farkle, and Primrose looks at Zay weirdly when he responds with that. Zay looks at them and shrugs. "Love never dies, man."

"Alright," Farkle looks back at his laptop. "Favorite song?"

"Ooh, Desperado." Lucas responded.

A smile tugs on Primrose's lips as she answers with, "Any song by One Direction."

"Anything by Celine Dion." Zay answered.

Primrose shares a look with Lucas and Farkle before looking at Zay weirdly. "Seriously?" She asks and he nods. She shrugs. "Not that surprised though. Celine is super talented."

"Mine is the sound of my computer turning on." Farkle grins and the mimics how the sound of his computer turning on sounded. "This is so easy." He smiles cutely and looks at Primrose when he saw she was smiling at him. "What?"

Primrose shakes her head, chuckling a bit. "You're cute."

Farkle smiles shyly and blushes a bit. "Thanks." He playfully elbows her and a smile tugs on her lips at what he says next. "You too."

There was this profile of a girl who had short blue hair, an army green jacket, and even a sword on the school website, going by the name Jexica. Ever since the profile was made Primrose had a feeling that Riley was behind it because of how similar Jexica's interests are and how Jexica replies to everyone's comments were similar to how Riley talked. After talking about this Jexica girl with the boys, she was glad she wasn't the only one who thought it was Riley behind the profile.

"Hey, guys," Lucas walks over to where Riley and Maya are standing in the middle of the hallway after a class along with Farkle, Primrose, and Zay. "How would you feel about making some new friends outside our group?"

"Of course." Maya smiles and shrugs. "Why?"

"Uh, there's this girl..." Lucas started.

"What?" Riley asked in an angry tone.

"Named Jexica." Lucas finished his sentence.

"What?" Riley repeated, but sounding more happy this time. Primrose tilts her head to the side, staring suspiciously at Riley.

"I don't know. I just really feel like I get Jexica." Lucas continued.

Farkle nods. "Yeah, she's a mystery woman. A mystery makes a woman very intriguing."

"She also has a interesting sense of style." Primrose chimed in.

"I went to summer camp with her."

Primrose furrows her eyebrows at hearing Zay say that but didn't see Zay beside them. She turns around, chuckling when she saw he was leaning against the lockers, looking as if he was talking to the camera like they do on tv shows. Lucas shook his head and grabbed Zay's arm, dragging him back over to the group.

Lucas smiles, looking at Riley and Maya. "It looks like we all like her."

"Better than Maya?" Riley questioned.

Maya looks at her with offense. "Hey!"

"I'm sorry." Riley apologizes to her, looking at her with an apologetic smile before turning back to the others. "Better than Maya?"

"I hear the freshmen just joined the high school social network." Cory started the class, sitting on top of his desk and smiling at his class.

"Not me." Riley smiled.

"I hear someone has already caused quite a stir." Cory continued.

"Not me." Riley repeated, the smile never leaving her face.

"So who is ready to learn something new today?" Cory asked the class the next day at school.

"Not me." Maya replied.

"A social network is something that has its roots firmly planted in our history." Cory continues. "Cave paintings, stone tablets, scrolls and papyrus leaves, they all help decode what went on in a society. Now what are historians in the future gonna use to help determine who we were?"

Farkle smiles. "The Internet and my frozen brain."

Lucas chuckles. "If they look at the Internet, they're gonna think we're pretty ridiculous."

Cory raises his eyebrows. "You think? Why is that?"

"Because the Internet makes us look like a society of people that only care about dancing cats." Zay replied.

"But we're more than that." Lucas pointed out.

"We are," Cory nods. "But no one knows that if the dancing cat videos have a billion views and the discovery of a new planet only gets 27,000 likes."

Farkle grins. "All me."

"Beside one." Primrose chimed in, turning around in her chair to look back at Farkle since he sat behind her. She smiles at him. Farkle nods, looking at her with a smile. "Okay. Almost all me."

"What's the difference?" Lucas asks. "Dancing cats and a new planet are just going to get replaced by something new tomorrow."

Cory points at him. "Exactly right, Mr. Friar. So what does that say about us?"

"Oh, oh! I know." Maya smiles. "It's not that we're a society of dancing cats. It's that we're a society of-" Maya gestures for Cory to continue. "Yes, Matthews?"

Cory chuckles. "It says that we're a society that lets things rise and fall that have no real value because the Internet makes us readily available to us so they get a lot of clicks and likes and comments, and then they fade out of our mind when the next thing comes along."

"Well," Zay outstretches his arms before laying them on his desk. "What's wrong with a little distraction?"

"Nothing, if that's all it is." Cory responds. "How many people have seen the dancing cats video?"

Everyone raises their hand. "What about the sneezing panda?" Once again, everyone raised their hand. As Cory speaks again everyone lowers their hand. "It seems to me this isn't a distraction at all. It's a lifestyle."

"The Internet also helps us with homework and study." Primrose spoke up.

Cory nods. "And that's great. Okay, so who here knows the capital of Minnesota?" No one answers. "What about penguins? North or South Pole? Polar bears at the South or is it the other way around?"

"Oh, I know this!" Primrose smiles. "Penguins live in the South Pole and Polar bears live in the North Pole."

Everyone looks at her with a bit of surprise and she shrugs her shoulders. "I like animals."

Cory smiles and points at Primrose. "Great job, Primrose." Primrose smiles and Cory turns to face the class. "Okay, so who has seen 'Charlie bit my'-" He gets cut off by the class saying the rest of the sentence from the 'Charlie bit my finger' video.

"Okay," Cory nods and chuckles. "I guarantee you guys that what historians will say about us is that we're a society that spent a lot of time with a click or a like or a comment. And it's especially easy if nobody knows who you are because a lot of people spend their time posting under anonymous names. Is that a good thing or bad thing?"

"Good." Riley almost immediately answered.

"Good." Cory raises his eyebrows. "Why good?"

Riley smiles. "Just good."

"Just why?" Cory questioned, wanting a better answer than that.

"Because maybe life is easier that way." Riley answered.

"Maybe." Cory nods. "Or maybe hiding behind a fake screenname gives the people the courage to go negative. Or someone who's too scared to express themselves an undeserved moment of attention."

Primrose tilts her head to the side whenever a voice is sounded over the school pa system. "Attention, Abigail Adams High. Will Jexica please report to the school office? Jexica. We just really want to meet you."

The next day of school Jexica became less popular because of a video of a rabbit playing the piano. Primrose overheard Riley talking to Maya about Jexica. She wasn't exactly for sure what they were talking about, but she did hear Maya say 'She's you' so now she knows for sure that Riley has been Jexica this whole time.

"Okay," Cory says, getting the classes attention. "Historians will decide whatever they decide about us. How do you guys feel about who you are?"

"I got 109 followers." Zay smiles. "So I feel pretty good no matter what happens."

"Really? What's valuable?" Cory inquired.

"Polar bears, North Pole. Penguins, South Pole." Primrose answered, pointing at Farkle to add the last part.

Farkle smiles a bit. "And the capital of Minnesota is St. Paul."

Cory grins, pointing at the couple. "That's great, that's great, right? Isn't that great?" He sighs when nobody seemed happy about that. "'Charlie bit my finger'." Everyone starts repeating the 'Charlie bit my finger' video with smiles on their faces.

When the class goes quiet, Cory continues to speak. "If something that's important to us today is so easily replaced by something else tomorrow, we have to wonder if it ever really had any value at all. What can we learn by that?"

Riley shakes her head. "I don't know."

Cory points at her. "How do you not know?"

"I don't know because I live in a world that judges me based on based on whatever movie or song I like, and I'm expected to answer questions about myself, but I'm still figuring out who I am and everything could change tomorrow." Riley responded.

"Because who you are isn't measured by today or tomorrow, but by a whole bunch of days of what you do." Cory explains. "Not necessarily what you like or what you say at a particular time."

He looks at the class. "The great thing about evolving is that we continue to grow and feel. Don't be influenced by somebody's likes or clicks or favorites. Who should determine what you think?"

Maya smiles. "Wikipedia."

Cory looks at her with disgusted expression and shakes his head. "You disgust me. Go figure this out in the bay window. Class is over!"

****

The friend group now sat in Riley's bedroom. Primrose sat on the bay window between Maya and Farkle and Riley sat on the other end of the bay window. Lucas and Zay sat on the floor beside the bay window.

"Hey, huckleberry?" Maya asked.

Lucas looks at her. "Yes?"

Maya looks at him. "What do you know?"

Lucas chuckles lightly. "I know a lot of things. I know that we need to stick together. I know that the only way we can do that is if we're honest with each other."

Maya shakes her head. "Get to it."

Lucas looks at Riley. "I know that you are Jexica."

Farkle then speaks next. "I know that you are Jexica."

"I know that you are Jexica." Primrose said.

"Lucas told me that you are Jexica." Zay spoke.

Riley sighs. "How did you guys know that?"

"Riles, we know who you are." Primrose smiled.

Lucas nods. "Yeah, you don't have to write down some fake profile for us to know who you are. I'd recognize you anywhere."

"What? No," Maya points at him. "You said something to her so now you have to look at me and say something to me."

Lucas looks at her with a smile. "I'd recognize you anywhere."

Maya furrows her eyebrows. "You're not even trying."

Lucas groans. "I'm tired all the time."

"Guys." Farkle spoke.

Zay looks at him with raised eyebrows. "Yes?"

"I want us to last forever." Farkle said.

"Me too." Primrose smiled, intertwining her hand with Farkle's and he looked at her with a smile.

"Well, how do we do that?" Riley asked.

"By finding out that friends who know who you are is the most real thing there is." Maya replied.

"So, Riley," Lucas looks at Riley with a small smile. "What are you gonna put on your profile?"

"Yeah, Riles," Primrose looks at Riley with a smile. "Who are you?"

****

Primrose decides to go to check on Riley that night along with Maya. They get to Riley's bay window, panicking a bit at seeing she was on her laptop. "Step away from the Internet." Maya told her, climbing through the window. She scooted over along with Riley so Primrose can sit beside them once she climbed through.

Riley chuckles lightly. "I finally made my own profile." She smiles, handing the laptop over to Maya, letting her and Primrose look at it. Primrose smiles as she looks at Riley's profile while Riley continues to speak. "I put down all my favorites. I put down everything that makes me who I am."
