Mrs Ribbon
Last night Rob came with me when I walked. He sat me down on a log hidden from the road.
"Red, I've been given a job offer. A good, honest job. I want you to come with me, become a bounty hunter."
"Why?" Why would he do this?
"I want us to be happy and safe."
"What about the boys?"
He looked uncomfortable.
"They can carry on the group without us."
I shook my head. This group was my life!
"Please Red. For me?"
"I'll think about it."
He smiled, leaning forward.
"Thanks."
I gasped as he brushed his lips softly agains t mine. I held my hand to my face.
Was he trying to bribe me?
Despite that fact.... Goodness he was good looking. But how could I convince him to turn these people down?
Robin had invited me to meet with these employers. Despite his assurances, I went armed to the teeth.
We met in Nottingham woods, of course. They were there first, three cloaked figures. One, on the left, was short and slim, ideal for house robberies. The one on the right was tall and thick in contrast. The middle man was as tall as the right man and as thin as the left man. He stood perfectly motionless, unlike his large companion, and fidgety small friend.
Rob seemed tense, and even he wasn't such a fool as to go unarmed. His bow and arrow were concealed beneath his cloak.
I, myself, had gone all out. A shopping expedition had occupied and I had a new set of ruby-hilted knives that moulded into my fists, deadly darts ready to fly, with a ribbon of blood fluttering behind them.
"Peace, my friends. This is nothing but a friendly meeting, an observation for our future partners." The middle man's tones were silky and sticky, like a spider web. The two men stilled, ordered into statues by their master.
The aforesaid master stepped forward, out of the shadows that hid him. The hood was lowered slowly, by two small hands with long, bony fingers as pale as the moonlight that made the leaves silver.
I frowned. The man was familiar, as a long ago memory in another life.
His ice-blue eyes found mine, and I froze. My own eyes roamed his face, horror climbing up my muscles like frost.
"Recognise me, Red Riding? Or should I say, Mrs Ribbon?"
Yes, I did. Those sharp, skeleton-like features and his blonde, neatly kept hair were unforgettable. They were the features that haunted my dreams every night. Wolfe was hiding the bushes, included her a him growling softly.
"Sir, Mr Ribbon, do you know Red? How?"
I rolled my eyes at my oblivious partner in crime.
Mr Ribbon chuckled darkly.
"Why, my good young fellow, Miss Red Hood here is my wife. Or she would have been, if not for her silly mother letting her darling princess run away."
