Nine

Delilah bounces on her toes as she waits by the door of her grandparents house, staring out the window and grinning as she watches for the taxi carrying her mother to pull up. The gift she got for her mom is clutched tightly in her hands and her grandparents watch from the dining room, in a good mood for once.

The two seniors were amused and warmed by the love the little girl obviously had for her mother, despite the fact that they had wished their daughter would abort the baby.

Although it was immature, they found it cute when Delilah had run up to them the day before to show them what she'd gotten for her mum at the mall, telling them she'd taken the bus and used money she had saved up from when she lived with her mum.

Delilah didn't like lying to the two, but she liked them being mad at her even less, so it'd have to do.

It didn't bother her now, anyway, she was too distracted thinking about all the fun things she's gonna do with her mummy when she finally gets here, but it seems to be taking much too long- although, her mother said the plane would land at nine and the taxi would probably arrive at the house after eleven thirty, and it was currently eleven twenty.

Delilah has been bouncing about the house all morning, suppressing her squeals as best she could.

Even her favorite boys haven't really crossed her mind until now, when she remembered how excited she was to introduce her mother to them. They'd like mum, and she can see no reason why her mum wouldn't like them. They're sweet and kind and loving and they keep Delilah in line when she needs it, and theyre her only friends, right now, despite how she wishes she could gain more. But that's so hard to do when you rarely leave the neighborhood.

"Mummy!" She shrieks when a taxi pulls up. She yanks the door open as her mom opens the door to the taxi with a large grin.

"Baby!" April exclaims. She puts her bag down and laughs as Delilah runs into her arms and hugs her tightly. "I missed you so much, sweetheart! I love you baby."

The words get to delilah more than they should, and she begins sobbing unexpectedly. April gasps, sitting down on the nearby bus stop bench and sitting Delilah in her lap, kissing her head and letting her sob into her shoulder.

"What's wrong, my baby? Why are you crying?" She says, trying to comfort the little girl. "What can mommy do, my little one?"

"I mi-mi-missed you!" She sobs, and the taxi driver sighs in annoyance because he can't leave as long as April's bags are in the trunk.

"I'll get them." David smiles, opening the trunk and pulling out April's suitcase. The taxi driver pulls away and April struggles to pick Delilah up and carry her inside.

Ashton, who 'just so happens' to be passing the window, frowns when he sees the woman carrying the sobbing girl in. He almost wants to intrude, make sure everything is okay, but he refrains.

Delilah said she'd bring her mum over to meet them later, she's probably just happy her mum is back. She's probably okay, but he can't help but worry, as do the other boys when he tells them what he saw.

Once inside, April takes Delilah to her room as David cringe the bags in and sets them inside the door before leaving the two to talk.

"Stop crying, baby, mommy's here." She comforts, and slowly Delilah calms to sniffles.

"Msorry, mummy. I d-didn't meanta cry, b-but I missed you s-so much. I love you." Delilah says as she cuddles up to her mom, still sitting in her lap.

April smiles and kisses away her tears. "You know you never have to apologize for crying, baby. Mommy missed you so much too, and I love you more." She reassures.

"Th-they don't like it. W-when I cry." Delilah whimpers. "I'm so glad y-you're here."

"Don't worry about your grandparents, li-baby. You're allowed to have feelings. And I'm very glad to be back with you, my sweet love." April smiles kindly and kisses Delilah's head before setting the small girl in front of her on the bed, instead of on her lap.

"How has work been?" Delilah asks politely.

"It's been fine, sweetheart. But mummy doesn't wanna talk about work, how have you been? What have you been up to?" The brunette woman pets Delilah's fading pink hair as she speaks softly, with a kind, warm, gentle, sweet, and oh so loving tone reserved for her babygirl. Her eyes hold all the love in the universe, and Delilah loves them, loves her mothers eyes. Loves her sweet voice. Loves her.

"I'm good, mummy. Yesterday I went to the mall, and I got you this." Delilah shyly states, pushing the box into her mothers hand with a grin, despite her red eyes and sparkly tears running down her cheeks.

"Oh, baby, Thankyou. You didn't have to get me anything." But the woman still grins with child like, youthful excitement, opening the box quickly and giggling as she pulls away wrapping paper covering the present.

April gasps, tears filling her eyes at the rose gold jewelry. She pulls out the bracelet, a delicate but sturdy chain, with a bar in the middle, that reads in black letters, in Delilah's unique and adorable handwriting, 'I love you, mum! Delilah'.

Surprisingly, the gift hadnt taken long to find, and Delilah had spent all the money she had on the piece, that was real gold- although only four karat, but real none the less. She couldn't say all she'd wanted, or she would have engraved a whole letter, but they charged by the word. It was just the right amount, to tell her mum what she always needs to know, and to be with her mum all the time.

A few tears sprung from April's blue eyes- that matched Delilah's to the detail- and down her pale cheeks. "Oh baby, I love it." She exclaims in a weak and cracking voice. "Help me put it on, would you?"

Delilah grins and nods, clipping the bracelet around her mothers right wrist before leaning forward to kiss her mums cheek.

"I'm never taking it off." April assures, smiling so big her face hurts.  "But delilah, where'd you get the money? Are your grandparents giving you an allowance?"

Delilah had never had an allowance when she lived with her mother, because April practically bought her whatever she wanted.

Delilah didn't know what to tell her mom. She couldn't lie, but she didn't know if she could tell the truth, either. "And did they take you to the mall? They never took me anywhere when I was your age. Or, well, I was a bit younger than you, because I almost had you by the time I was your age, but you know what I mean." The young woman rambles. Delilah giggles, deciding to avoid the first question and answer the second.

"No, they didn't. They say I need to grow up and be able to go places by myself, they make me take the bus. They even send me for groceries sometimes. But, um, can I tell you a secret, mummy?" Delilah shyly asks, in a quiet voice.

"Of course, darling. You know you can tell me anything." April frowns, worried about her daughter. Shed never kept secrets before?

"My friends, the neighbors, the ones I was telling you about?" April nods. "They take me, Ive never gone alone, I'm too scared. But Marcy and David don't know that. I don't tell them, they'd call me a baby." Delilah pouts.

"Well I don't blame you, sweetheart, you're too young to be expected to run adult errands by yourself." April frowns. "I'm glad you have these friends. And I'd like to meet them, may I?" She grins at Delilah's large smile and giggle.

"Of course. You'll love them. I love them. They're nice to me and they have fun with me, even though I'm younger than them. I mean, they get a bit upset when I act up, you know," Delilah giggles as her mother chuckles and nods, "but then they help me do better."

"Well I'm glad, it doesn't seem like your grandparents are doing a good job of guiding you. Oh, I almost forgot, I have something for you too!" April grins and stands, going to her suitcase and opening it, pulling out a medium sized baby pink box and giving it to delilah.

The little girl grins and pulls the lid off the box, pulling away the paper on top and taking the pearl pink fabric out, gasping in amazement at the beautiful dress.

"Mummy!" She exclaims.

"Isn't it lovely? Try it on!"

Delilah nods and grins, quickly slipping into the gorgeous dress, twirling as she looks in the mirror.

"I love it! Oh my goodness I love it!" She giggles, turning to her mum and hugging her. "Thankyou so much mummy!"

"Of course, sweet girl. You look so pretty. Can I do your makeup, too?"

Delilah's smile grows and she nods quickly. "Please?"

April smiles warmly and sits Delilah in the bed, grabbing her makeup bag out of her purse and getting to work on doing a simple and beautiful look on her daughter. She puts on a bit of foundation and blush, along with a little contour and highlighter when her daughter begged her to do her makeup the same way her mums was always done- although the little girl didn't need any makeup at all to look beautiful-, before slightly filling out her eyebrows, putting light pink eyeshadow over her lids and a tiny bit of brown in the crease and on the outer lid, and then doing a very thin line of eyeliner with a small wing, and then mascara, and light pink sparkly lip gloss.

"My beautiful girl." She hums, kissing Delilah's hair when she finishes.

"Now, when can I meet these friends of yours? You should show them your new dress."

"I can't wait." Delilah giggles. "We can go see them whenever. They don't mind." Delilah answers.

"Which house do they live in? Should we go now?" April asks, glancing to the window.

"Oh, yes! They're in the black house." Delilah stands and- after putting on some lacy socks and black Mary Janes- pulls her mother out of the gray room and to the front door.

"They're names are Luke, Michael, Ashton, and calum. They have Australian accents, I love them." Delilah giggles the random fact as her mother frowns.

"They're all older boys?" She questions.

"Well, yes. David and Marcy made me go talk to them because Mikey fixes computers for work and mine wasn't working, and I didn't want to. But now we're friends." By the time Delilah's finishes rambling, they're on the boys porch, and Delilah is knocking, so April has no time to further worry.

It doesn't take long before a well dressed young man, with gorgeous tan skin and perfectly styled black hair answers the door, smiling fondly down at the familiar little girl and then turning his charming eyes to the woman standing slightly behind her, with much of the same strikingly beautiful features Delilah has.

"Hi Cali! My mummy finally got here!" The young teenager greets excitedly, then turns to her mother. "Mum, this is Calum. Calum, my mums name is April." She introduces the two formally, smiling widely.

The Maori man extends a hand to the slightly shocked older woman, who falters for a moment before smiling politely and returning the handshake. "Nice to meet you, April." He grins.

Calum, as well as the other boys, know that the young mother is going to be concerned that her daughters only friends are four 20 year old Australian housemates, who are men, because well, it is a bit strange and their intentions could easily be read as inappropriate- which, who knows, really, if their intentions are truly innocent- so they've all decided to try their best to put on the charm- not by far too hard of a task for the stunning young men- and act as politely as they can to not induce further worry, and hopefully reduce April's worries a bit.

"You two can come on in, the other boys are in the living room."

Delilah bounds past Calum- under his arm that's leaned against the doorway- without any qualms, obviously knowing her way about the house and confident in her trust in the boys.

Calum steps aside with a chuckle to let April pass, and she hesitantly follows her daughter with a polite smile towards the kiwi.

Again, April is a bit surprised at the sight of the three attractive men, nearly a decade younger than herself, greeting her baby girl.

"There she is!" Delilah giggles when she spins around to see her mum enter, looking over the men cautiously, but with a polite smile. "This is my mum, April. Mummy, this is Luke," Delilah gestures to the broad man with sandy blonde curls that push back and reach his neck and piercing blue eyes and a chiseled jaw covered in neat scruff, who smiles and nods in greeting to April, who returns the gesture.

"Michael," the little girl points to the man with- now- bleach blonde hair already is medium length and frames his face, next to his glasses that frame his bright green eyes. He too smiles brightly and politely at the unfamiliar woman.

"And Ashton." Lastly, a man with slightly tan skin and honey colored hair, styled sleekly compared to the normal messy curls that hang in his face Delilah usually is greeted with.

Ashton stands to shake April's hand, and the other two boys follow, repeating a "nice to meet you, April." Or something along those lines, and April responds with "a pleasure" or "you as well".

"Delilah's been very excited for you to visit, hasn't stopped talking about you." Michael informs, smiling at April and then down at Delilah when she giggles.

"Yes, she told me how you boys have been helping her, taking her when my parents try to make her run their errands by herself. I appreciate it, I don't like her out alone, really." April chuckles.

"Of course, we're happy to." Luke says.

"Guys, look at the pretty dress mama got me." Delilah breaks the silence that lasted only a second or two, doing a twirl as the boys chuckle.

"It's lovely, lilah." Ashton compliments, and the other three agree. Delilah tilts her head a bit, confused by the lack of any sort of cute nickname from any of the men.

But again, the boys didn't want to make April worried or suspicious for any reason, and calling her daughter "babydoll" or anything along those lines, may look a bit ill-intentioned.

"Have you given your mum the present you got her?" Luke asks, and Delilah grins and pulls her mothers wrist forward to show them she's wearing it, making April stumble a bit and chuckle awkwardly as she realigns herself, standing up straight and trying not to let her cheeks turn red.

"Be careful, baby." She mumbles, moving Delilah's hair behind her shoulder briefly.

"Um, can I get you anything?" Ashton offers, glancing towards the kitchen.

"Oh no, I'm okay, Thankyou dear." April smiles. "Actually, I've made arrangements for us, that we should probably be heading to, sweetheart." April turns to her little one, who pouts a bit but nods, turning to the four boys and giving each of them a hug, which they awkwardly return, worried of what April might think. Delilah frowns at there odd behavior but doesn't say anything of it.

"It was lovely to meet you, Ashton, Luke, calum, and Michael." April nods to each of them, and they return the farewell, showing the two girls to the door.

"See you later!" Delilah smiles as they leave, and each of the boys say it back as Delilah bounds toward whet grandparents house, her mother in tow.
