Chapter 5: Ortho's Tsum I
Meanwhile, in Idia's bedroom in the Ignihyde Dorm, Ortho and his Tsum are trying to wake up the sleeping housewarden, his brother Idia.
Ortho shakes him, "Idia. Idia! It's morning."
Idia however is still sleeping.
He lets out a groan of exhaustion, "Urgh... Then I can keep sleeping. C'mon, Ortho, gimme two more hours..."
"You said you'd set up this PC before bed and then stopped before it was even close to finished," Ortho says.
"Yeah, I was gonna get back to it after a little gaming first...and then morning rolled around..." Idia answers, and goes back to sleep.
"You can be so hopeless sometimes..." Ortho says, dejected.
Suddenly, the Ortho Tsum comes on the counter and bounces up and down in front of the speaker.
Ortho turns to his counterpart, "Tsum? Why are you hopping up and down in front of the speakers?"
Ortho Tsum then points to the speaker before pointing to the sleeping Idia.
"Oh, you're saying to play music?" Ortho asks.
And the Tsum nods in response.
"Okay," Ortho says and tries to think,"What's a song that wakes my brother right up...?" And comes up with an idea, "Ooh, I know."
Ortho then turns up the speaker as he connects himself. Then begins to play the music.
In a matter of seconds, India opens his eyes and quickly wakes up from his sleep.
Idia reacts, "Ah! The main theme for one of my favorite games! Ugh, it's so good—one note and I'm already amped!"
"And he's up. Smart thinking, tsum!" Ortho says to the Tsum.
He then says, "Now fetch him some water.
Ortho Tsum leaves the room, then comes back with a glass of water balanced on its back. Then presents the glass to Idia, "Man, would not have expected that much dexterity from something so small and stubby..." and takes the glass, "Thx."
Idia then drinks the water, " Ahh..." and feels refreshed.
Looking at the Tsum, Idia says, "You know, now that I'm looking at it up close, it's got a lot in common with you, Ortho."
"For sure" Ortho agrees, "Isn't it strange how a creature so similar to me practically fell into my arms?"
"Isn't there anything about tsums online?" Idia asks.
"I did a lot of digging, but I couldn't find anything," Ortho answers.
Then wonders, "Is their resemblance to students mimicry, or a type of convergent evolution...?" They could just be like that naturally... Or it could be something entirely beyond our scope of understanding. I'll continue my investigation."
He then asks his brother, "What are your plans, Idia?"
"Guess I'll finish building this PC,"
"Okay!" Ortho responds, happily.
Then turns to the Tsum, "C'mon, tsum, let's get out of Idia's hair and head to the lounge."
However, Ortho notices the Tsum is staring at the computer.
Ortho asks, "...Tsum? are you interested in the computer?"
The Tsum moves closer to it.
Idia says in a panic, "Whoa, hey! Hold on, stay away from the motherboard! We can't risk any static shocks. These are very delicate components. One wrong move could fry them all!"
"Relax, Idia. My analysis last night confirmed that tsums don't produce static electricity," Ortho reassures.
That makes Idia confused, "Srsly? How does that make sense? Do the legs act as natural grounding or something?"
"I'm not sure how it works. I couldn't identify the substance they're made of with an external examination," Ortho says, "And for some reason, my attempts at internal scans just bounced off of it. I'll keep trying, but still..."
"Wait, what?" Idia responds, shocked, "Mysterious creature or no, this is ridiculous. But eh, if it's not producing static, it can stick around. It's not exactly floofy, but being a mini-Ortho qualifies it as cute."
Ortho giggles, "Heh heh, thanks. I'll do some more investigating, then. Come here, Tsum."
The Ortho Tsum comes over to Ortho.
India begins to do his work while Ortho and the Tsum get better acquainted. And Ortho is showing the Tsum around the room.
Then Ortho, "Yup, internal scan attempts are still getting stymied. I'll adjust my sensors and try again..."
Then the Tsum hops near Ortho's legs.
Ortho quickly moves back, "Whoa! How many times do I have to tell you not to go near my legs? You could make my attitude control bug out," and the Tsum follows.
Meanwhile, India has just finished his work, "Whew... That's the OS up and running," then turns around, "What're you doing, Ortho?"
"Oh, uh... The tsum's been showing a lot of curiosity about my legs," Ortho says.
The Tsum continues to look at Ortho's legs.
"It seems interested in my antigrav flight unit. I wonder why," Ortho says.
Soon, the Ortho Tsum jumps up and down as it flaps its limbs.
"It keeps jumping and flapping its limbs..." Ortho says, and begins to wonder, "Does it want to fly too?"
And the Ortho jumps for joy, expressing his answer.
Then Idia says, "Aha. I could whip up an external attachment for it."
"Ooh... A little jet pack would be perfect!" Ortho says, amazed, "We could repurpose the attitude control algorithms I use for it. If we check the archives for blueprints... Yeah, this could work." then turns to the Tsum, "Tsum, would you like a flight unit?"
The Ortho Tsum hops up and down with joy.
"...I think it likes that idea!" Ortho says. Then turns to his brother, "Could you help me make on, Idia?"
"Sure, how could I say no? I got this!" Idia says, eager to help.
And Ortho says, "Great! Then we should start by calculating the tsum's optimal flight unit form..."
